SAFETY-RAZOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled May 28, 1919. Serial No. 300,264;
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMns D. Goonwnv,
citizen of the -United States, residing at Richmond, in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toa'n improvement in safety-razors of that type wherein the handle is adjustable with relation to the holder to arrange the blade in different angular relations to the handle for convenfat I clamping :plate.
the 1 tion.
. ience in use.
The present invention provides means whereby the handle considered asa whole, is swiveled'with relation to the blade holder to provide desired relative adjustments, with such handle and blade holder provided with cooperating locking means to fix such parts.
The invention further provides for utiliz-- ing the locking member for the adjustments of the blade holder and handle as a means .for removably connecting the handle sec tions. I
In the drawings Figurell is a perspective view of the impractically as an ordinary razor. Fig. 2. isa similar view illustrating another adjustment of the blade holder.
. 1 Fig. 3 is a broken vertical section, showing the swiveled connection between the holder and handle, andthe locking means for suchswiveled-connection.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the guard p'late. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the Fig. 6 is a detail transverse sec tion.v
'Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section; throughholder, theblade being shownin posi- The improved as comprising a blade ho1der1andhandle safety-razor is here shown Patented Jan.6',1920.
the bearing edges 9 of such plate, that when the plate 8 is forced down onto the blade A,
the lip is put under tension. The clamping plate, at the end opposite the lip 7 is formed with a depression 10, having a flat bottom wall 11, and securing member 12 is secured to the guard plate 3 to cooperate therewith. This securing member comprises a strip 13 slidably mounted on the relatively under surface of the guard plate, as'by lips 14, the outer end of the strip having an upstands ing wall 15 terminating in an inturned lip 16,- adapted when the clamping plate is'in position'to engage in the depression 10, bearingxsquarely on the bottom wall 11 thereof, to old the parts in fixed relation.
The strip 13 hasa depending finger projection 17 whereby the securing member may be operated, and, incident to the tension of the lip 7 when the parts are in clamping relation, release movement of the securing member results in the clamping member springing free o'f-the clamping position, to.
facilitate removal of the blade. The adjustable connectionbetween the handle and blade holder, comprises a substantiallysemi-spherical head 18 secured 'to and depending from the lower surface of the guard plate, having a plain upper por! tion which is arranged in spaced relation to said guard plate. A ring 19, hereinafter termed a swiveled member is arranged between the head 18 and the guard plate, being tweensaid head and late. The swivel member has diametrica ly-opposedi depending ears 20, projecting in close relation to the as 21', and the other, the handle proper, as
22. The connecting section 21, comprises a' .rotatably mounted on the connection be comparatively short se pti t ii 23, having a I ranged at substantially any angle with relation thereto. Furthermore the handle sec- .tion' is short, and by reason of this fact such section projects but a short distance beyond the holder, it can therefore be 'conveniently packed in the usual case.
The handle proper comprises the usual hand-hold section 27, which may be of any desired form or convenient length from the upper end of which extends a screw 28, of a size to engage the bore 24 of the connecting handle section 21.
The head 18 and terminal of the screw 28 are formed for cooperation, so that by such cooperation the handle and blade holder may be secured in any position of adjustment permitted by the swiveled connection. Such relative formation is here shown as a series of openings or depressions29 in the head, the terminal of the screw 30 being formed to cooperate therewith. Other forms of such cooperation are contemplated.
The handle proper 22, may be unscrewed from the section 21 a sufiicient distance to interrupt the coaction between the head 18 and the screw 28, and the blade holder and handle adjusted .as desired, whereupon a locking of such adjusted relation is secured by again severing the handle proper to gauge the cooperation between the screw and The handle proper" is of course entirely separable from the connection section 21, so that in packing such handle, otherwise, an awkward extension from the blade holder, may be conveniently taken care 'of in the case.
Claims: f
1-. A safety razor comprising a blade holder, a two-part handle, one part of such handle having swiveled connection with the blade holder and formed with a threaded opening, the other part of such handle being wholly separable and provided with a threaded extension to engage the threaded opening and cooperating with the blade holder when in handle forming position'to engage the swivel and lock said swivel movement. I
2. A safety razor comprising a blade holder, a two-part handle, one part of such handle having swiveled connection with the blade holder, the other part of such handle being wholly separable, and a connection between the two members of the two part handle to secure same together and cooperating with the blade holder when in handle forming position to lock said swivel movement.
3. A safety razor comprising a blade holder including a guard plate formed near one end with a slot and an adjacent raised portion, said blade holder having lips struck therefrom and bent to form parallel guides,
a sliding plate formed with a slot through which the lips pass, the outer end of the sliding plate extending upwardly and laterally parallel with the blade holder to form a tongue, a blade having a notch to engage the raised portion, a clamping plate concaveconvex in cross section and formed at one end with an angular li'p' which engages in the slot, and disposed to place the clamping plateunder tension when in clamping position and formed at its opposite end with a depression the bottom of which is flat and with which the tongue engages, and a handle extending from the blade holder.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
