HINGE-SETTER.

To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRANCESCO CATALA- Norro, a citizen oli' the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge- Setters; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gages and more particularly to mortising gages and vhas special relation to gages for use in forming hinge mortises both in doors and door jambs.
A particular object of the present invention is the provision of a gage which may be set directly from a hinge leaf to correspond to the width, length and thickness of the leaf, and which may then be applied to a door in such a way as to present guide edges to indicate the dimensions of the mortise to be cut.
Another object is to provide such a gage which, with slight modilications orp its arrangement, may be used in connection with a door jamb.
Another object is to provide a gage having the above stated characteristics, which may be used upon doors and jambs of different dimensions.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a plate 10 forming a depth gage, end gage members 11 and a width gage member 12.

'lhe plate 10 includes a longitudinal finger 13 at one end and at one side, the plane edge 10 of the plate which includes this linger serving as a depth guide, as will be later explained. This plate 10 has an inner fiat door-engaging face 111, as indicated.
Disposed against the outer face of the plate 10, there is a side plate 15, adjustable longitudinally with respect to 'the plate 10, and held thereto by clamping bolts 16 working in slots 17. By means of these bolts and their wing nuts 18, the two plates may be held at ditl'erent points of their adjustment with respect to each other.
At its end opposite to that which overlaps the plate 10, the plate 15 carries a rib 19 on its inner face, the inner face of this rib lying in a plane with the face 111 of the plate 10, and formed through this rib, there is a guide way 2O in which the finger 13 is slidably received, as shown in Fig. 5.
Spaced flanges 21 are carried by the outer ends of the plates 10* and 15 upon their outer races, the inner surfaces of these flanges being converged outwardly to form dove-tail slots 22. These slots receive correspondingly formed arms 23 carried by the end gage members 11, the arms being slidable in the slots, and longitudinal slots 28 are formed in the arms 28, and receive bolts 24: carried by the plates 10 and 15, these bolts being provided with nuts 25 which may be operated to clamp the arms against movement, as will be understood. The slots 22 extend transversely of the plates 10 and 15, as shown.
The end gage members 11 include plates 26 which lie at right angles to the plate 10, and which project inwardly toward each other, beyond the arms 23. lThese plates include portions spaced from and parallel with the edge face 10 of the plate 10, as
shown, and these portions of the plates 26l are thickened, as shown at 27, the thickened portions extending inwardly beyond the There are thus formed relatively thin portions of these plates 26, which extend beyond the thickcned portions, these relatively thin portions being indicated at 28, and which lie in a plane at right angles to the plane of the plate l() and parallel with the plane of the edge 10 of the latter.
Envaged against the inner faces of the portions 28, is the width gage member 12. The member 12 is in the form of a bar, provided with longitudinal slots 30, through which are passed bolts 31, and these bolts are also passed through slots 32 formed in the plates 26. The slots 32 extend transversely of the plates 26, and thus the bar is adjustable transversely of these plates, while the members 11 which include the plates, are adjustable longitudinally of the bar 29, toward and away fromeach other. The bolts 31 are provided with clamping nuts 33, which are operable to hold the bar and plates at dierent points of their mutual adjustments.
At their ends opposite to the arms 23, the members 11 carry arms 34 extending in the same direction as the arms 23 and parallel therewith, and as shown in the drawing, Fig. 1, these arms 34 are arranged for disposal at one side of a door, against the opposite side face of which the plate 10 is engaged. With the arms and plate so dis posed, the portions of the members 11 between their arms will extend across the edge face of the door, as shown, and the inner faces of the thickened portions 27 of the plates 26 will engage against this edge face of the door.
The members 11 thus constitute yokes, the
vdoor when the parts are disposed as just described, the free edge of this flange lying in a plane with the inner faces of the portions 27 of the plates 26.
Clamping screws 36 are threaded through the freeends of the arms 34, and are operable to engage against the side face of the door, to hold the complete device thereto.
lhen it is desired to set the present gage for the cutting of a mortise for a particular hinge leaf, the end members 11 are first set soy that the inner faces of their thickened portions 27 lie spaced from the surface 10 of the plate 10 to an extent equal to the depth of the hinge leaf. rlChe side plate 15 is then set so that the edges of the plate 26 which constitute portions of the members 11 are spaced a distance equal to the length of the hinge leaf, and the member' 12 is set so that its inner face is spaced from the face 14 of the plate 10 a distance equal to the width of the hinge leaf. This adjustment of the complete structure may be accomplished by disposing the hingeleaf properly between the parts to be adjusted, and then `moving the parts into contact with the leaf as will be understood.
After adjustment, the device is placed upon the door as shown in Fig. 1, when the area of the edge face of the door bounded by the inner sides of the plates 26 and the inner Vface of the member 12 will indicate the lines upon which the cut is to be made for length and width of the mortise, while the surface 10 of the plate l0 will indicate the line on which the cut is to be made for the depth of the mortise. A chisel A may be used as indicated in Fig. 2 for making the cuts.
When the device is to be used on a door jamb, 1 employ the end members 40 shown in Fig. 7 rlhese end members are identical with the members 11, except that the arms 34 are omitted, and they are substituted for the members 11. In this use, the device is held against the door jamb, and the wood of the latter is marked with a suitable scriber to indicate the lines on which the cuts are to be made.
Some door jambs, by reason of moldings or other ornamentation thereon, may not permit of the use of the members 40, because of the length thereof, and 1 therefore provide shorter members 42, illustrated in Fig. 6, which are unprovided with the slots 32. lt will be` understood, of course, that when these members are used, the member 12 is dispensed with and the width of the mortise is marked in the usual way. Even without the member 12, however, the use of my device assures the marking of the tops and bottoms of the mortises so that they eX- tend at right angles to the side faces of the door, and thus proper positioning of the hinges is assured.
lt .will be seen from the drawings that the present device has been designed to prevent any rocking movement of the adjustable parts withk respect to each other, so that all gaging surfaces will remain per fectly true at all times.
What is claimed is:
1. A hinge mortise gage comprising a plate having a longitudinal gaging` edge, a plate lapped upon the first plate for longitudinal adjustment therealong, means for locking the plates in different relative positions, slotted members having gaging faces parallel with the gaging edge of the first plate and having angular arms, each of said first plates being provided with a transverse guideway in which one of said arms is slidably engaged for movement of the members to shift their gaging faces toward and away from the gaging edge of the first plate, means for locking the said members at different points of such movement, said inembers including portions extending laterally of the plate and having' gaging edges directed inwardly longitudinally of the first plate, a gaging member lying in a plane at right angles to the plane of the first plate and parallel with the plane ofthe gaging end thereof, said member having longitudinal slots at right angles to and registering with the slots of the first mentioned members and clamp bolts engaged in said slots.
2. A hinge mortise gage comprising yokes having arms adapted to be disposed at opposite sides of a door with the yoke bights extending across the edge face of the door, a depth gage plate adj ustably connected with the corresponding arms of the yoke at one side of the latter and shiftable toward and away from the yoke bights and a width gage member adjustably connected with the yoke bights for movement transversely of the edge of a door with which the device is engaged, said yokes being adjustable also with respect to both the depth and width l5 gage members toward and away from each other.
