Improvement in Buckles.
No, 132,482 Patented Oct. 22,1872. 7

ooLUMBUs E. MOORE, OF WAVELAND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,482, dated October 22, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS FRANKLIN MOORE, of Waveland, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Bridle and Harness Clasps, of which the following. is a specification N atare and Objects of the Invention.
My invention relates to the employment of a clasp for bridles or harness, to take the place of the buckle ordinarily used, and consists of two plates, each shouldered at one end, and having loops or guards at their op-' posite extremities, and short rigid projections or warts entering perforations in the strap or straps from opposite sides, which rigid projections or warts are secured in their posi- Description of the Drawing.
Figure 1 is a top view of a clasp, embodying my invention as applied to a bridle-rein and its ring. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the outer and inner shouldered tongueplates, which together constitute my improved clasp.
General Description.
a is a bridle-rein to which my clasp is represented as attached, though it is obvious that it may be applied as well to other parts of a harness or elsewhere. I) is the bridle-ring, around which the rein a is passed at n. d is the outside plate of my improved clasp, provided with the guard or loop e, at one extremity embracing the rein a and its bent portion 0, and having a rigid projection or wart, i, on its inner face and at its opposite end, which enters a perforation made in proper position in the part a of the rein. h h are shoulders made in'the sides of the end of the tongue.
- Plate d of the clasp k is the inner plate of the clasp, provided with a loop or guard, m, at one end, embracing the bridle-rein a and its bent portion 0. At the opposite end of the tongue-plate k and on its inner'face is a rigid wart or projection, i, which is made to pass into a perforation in the inner part c,of the rein. 0 is a shoulder made across the outer face of the ton gue-plate k, which abuts against the lower face of the loop 6 of the outer tongueplate, when the inner tongue-plate k is inserted in the loop or guard e. The shoulders h h in the outer plate abut against the vertical sides of the loop or guard at of the lower tongue-plate k. The loops or guards e m of the clasp thus embrace the parts a'and c of the rein, and each loop also embraces the tongue-plate of the other, the shoulders in the tongue-plates abutting against the loops to limit their movement, while any tension of the rein will serve to draw the parts more tightly. together, thus securely holding the warts ii in their position, while at any time the clasp can readily be removed. It will be seen by my construction of clasp that the sewing requisite in the employment of a buckle is dispensed with, thus economizing time, labor, and sewing material. If a rein or other part of a harness is broken on the road or elsewhere my improved clasp can be applied to the broken parts readily without sewing, which could not be done with the ordinary buckle. My clasp can also be readily ornamented on its tongue-plates as desired, and the strap is not weakened at its bent portion by the hole necessary for the buckle-tongue when the latter is employed. My clasp is especially adapted to bridles at the bit and to some other parts of harness, and by its use I am enabled not only to dispense with the ordinary buckle and sewing, but when applied to bridles it also economizes the saving of leather used for bridle-billets.
Claim.
I claim as new and of my invention The outer tongue-plate d, provided with a loop, c, projection i, and shoulders h h, in combination with the inner tongue-plate k, having a loop, m, projection i, and shoulder 0, constructed and operated substantially as described.
COLUMBUS FRANKLIN MOORE.
