This invention relatesto a flag raising de vice and itis an objectof the inventionto provide a novel andimproveddevice of this general character wherebya flag or the like may be readily and conveniently raised or lowered either n'ianually or ineehanicall y.

The invention consistsin the details iof construction and in the combination and arrangement of the" several parts of my improved flag raising device whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrat ing a flag raising device constructed in accordance with the embodiment of my invention, and in applied position certain of the parts being indicated by dotted lines.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View in elevation showing the flag part inserted within the protecting tube or housing forming part of the present invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 11 denotes the superstructure of a building and which has mounted thereon a tubular flag staff F. The staff F, as indicated in Fig. 1, has its lower portion extending Within the building through the top thereof,

Positioned adjacent to the lower portion ofthe F is a vertically disposed tube or housing 13, having its upper end open and adapted to be closed by the door 5, hinged or otherwise securedthereto. The
route stretch oflthe member 3 passes through the tubei or housinglS, so that when. the fiagi2iis lowered, the same can be inclosed within said illllDBmOlf, housing 13 to protect the same effectually against the elements, and particularly when the door is in closed posltlon.
In order that the flag may be properly folded or shirred to cause its insertion wit-liin the tube or housing 13, the snap 12 or the like is disengaged from the outer stretch of the member 3 so that the flag 2 will only be engaged with the member 3 at 1.
The lower pulley 6 is mounted upon a shaft 10, having one end portion extended exterior-1y of the flag staff F, and provided with a crank 7, whereby the pulley 6 may be manually rotated, in order to either raise or lower the flag 2. The shaft 10 is also operatively engaged, as at 9, with the driving shaft is of a motor 8, preferably electric, so that the flag may be mechanically raised or lowered.
Although not shown, it is to be understood that the operating circuit for the motor 8 is to be under control of a reversing switch of any desired type.
Interposed in the flexible member 3 is a turn buckle 4, operating to compensate for any slack which may occur in the member 3. The turn buckle 4 is so positioned as to operate as a stop to prevent the flag 2 from being pulled around either of the pulleys 6, and which action is accomplished by con tact of the turn buckle with either of such pulleys.
From the foregoing description, 1t is thought to be obvious that a flag raising after claimed.
I claim:
1. A-fiag raising device comprising a pair of vertically spaced pulleys, a flexible end less member passing around said pulleys, means for rotating one of said pulleys for imparting 1n vement to the endless member, a flag secured to the endless member, and means carried by the endless member and coacting with the pulleys for limiting the movement of the endless member in either direction, said last named means operating to take up slack in the endless memher. 1
2. A flag raising device comprising a tubular staff, pulleys supported by the opposite end portions of the staff, an endless flexible "member disposed around the pulleys, a
stretch of said member being disposed 7 through the staff, and the second stretch being arranged exterior-1y thereof, a flag secured to the exterior stretch of the endless member, means for rotating one of the pulleys to either raise or lower the flag, and a housing positioned adjacent the lower portion of the staif and having its upper end open, said housing receiving the flag when in its lowermost position.
3. A flag raising device comprising a tubular staff, pulleys supported by the opposite end portions of the staff, an endless flexible member disposed around the pulleys, a stretch of said member being disposed through the staff, and the second stretch being arranged exterior-1y thereof, a flag secured to the exterior stretch of the endless member, means for rotating one of the pulleys to either raise or lower the flag, a housing positioned adjacent the lower portion of the staif' and having its upper end open,
said housing receiving the flag when in its lowermost position, and a means for closing said open end of the housing.
4. A flag raising device comprising a pair of vertically spaced guides, a flexible endless member passing around said guides, a flag secured to one of the stretches of the endless member, a housing positioned adjacent the lower portion of the endless memher and having its upper end open, a stretch of the endless member passing through the housing, said housing receiving the tlag when in its lowermost position.
