KNIFE.
Specification a Letters Patent.
Patented 0a. 14, 1919.
Application filed May 13, 1919. Serial No. 296,815.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST G. V0os, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knives; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this application, and represents a side view of a knife constructed in accordance with my invention, with one of the side walls of the case broken away.
This invention relates to an improvement in knives, and particularly to a knife having a folding blade combined with other implements, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement for fixing the spring in the knife handle to co-act with the folding blade thereof; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a knife handle 2 of the usual pocket-knife type in one end of which a folding blade 3 is pivoted in the usual manner, its butt 4 being provided with bearing faces 5 against which one end of a spring 6 rests, the tendency of the spring being to hold the blade 8 in the open or closed position in the usual vmanner.
In the more general construction of knives, these springs are riveted to the case, but instead of riveting the spring I form its end 7 with an inwardly projecting shoulder 8 adapted to enter a notch 9 formed inthe butt 10 of a fixed'blade 11. By the term fixed blade I wish to be understood as including various articles, such for instance, as a paper cutter, nail file, button hook or any similar article which is secured between the sides of the handle by a rivet 12. This rivet 12 not only holds the fixed blade 1n place, but by holding the blade in place, looks the spring 6 in position, one edge being "held against the back of the knife. The inner edge of this spring is curved so as to bear upon the back and permit its opposite end to yield under the movement of the folding blade. 'W'th this construction the fixed blade and spring are secured in place by a single rivet, thus avoiding the necessity of drilling the spring for the rivet hole, as is the more general practice.
I claim The combination with a handle, of a folding blade pivotally mounted at one end of the handle, an element riveted in the opposite and of the handle, said element formed with a notch, and a spring having a bearing at one end against the back of the knife and formed at that end with an inwardly projecting shoulder entering the notch in the fixed element, whereby one end of the spring is locked in position, the opposite end extending into engagement with the folding blade. r
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST G. VOOS.
