To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. OREAR, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Frankfort, Franklin county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Repeating Devices for Talking-ldachines, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to repeating devices for talking machines, particularly of the type adapted to reproduce disk sound records, and it has for its object a device of this type which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and eiiicient and certain in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a repeating device which may be readily applied an attachment to existing machines without modifying or marring the sound record or any part of the machine. Yet another object of the invention is to provide a repeating device which may be readily adjusted to engage and return the stylus at the desired point in the reproduction. Still another bject of the invention is to provide a repeating device that, when desired, may operate as a brake to stop the further rotation of the record support. Yet a further object of the invention is to pro vide a. repeating device which is adjustable to predetermine the number of times the sound record shall be repeated, said device thereafter acting to stop the record support. Other objects will appear as the description of the invention proceeds.
Stated generally, the invention comprises a repeating device for talking machines in cluding articulated members mountable upon the record support to be rotated thereby, one of said members being adapted to engage the reproducer and by the articulation of said members, return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record.
The invention is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions one of which is shown on the accompanying drawings, but it is to be expressly understood that the drawings are for purposes of illustration only and are not to be construed as a definition of the limits of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims for that purpose.

Referring to Fig. l, 1 designates a talking machine of any usual or preferred construction, the same comprising a record-support 2 rotated by the spindle 3 and carrying a sound record 4, and a tone arm or sound conveyer 5 of any suitable construction with which communicates a sound-box or reproducer 6 comprising the usual or any suitable stylus 7.
The repeating device of this invention is designed to be mounted on and rotated with the recordsupport, but is preferably not attached to said support or record so as to avoid any special construction or disfigurement of such element, whereby it is especially adapted for use as an attachment for existing machines although, obviously, the repeating device of this invention could be applied to the machine when originally constructed without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the form shown, the repeating device comprises a member 8 adapted to be mounted on and rotated with the record support. Any suitable means may be provided for insuring the proper position and rotation of such member, the illustrated embodiment comprising 'a collar or washer 9 of frictional material, such as rubber, adapted to grip the projecting end of the spindle 3 whereby the member 8 is normally rotated with the record-support but may slip with respect thereto as hereinafter explained. Pivotally mounted at 10 on an arm 11 constituting a part of the member 8 is a pair of arm- like members 12 and 13 pivotally connected at 14 and constituting, with the member 8, a toggle device.
Member 13, at its outer end, is constructed to engage the reproducer for the purpose of returning the same to a preceding part of the sound-record. lVhile this member may be arranged and constructed to engage any suitable part of the reproducer, in the form shown the outer or free end or said member 13 is constructed to engage and receive the stylus, being provided with a groove 15 the bottom wall of which is reduced to a fine edge so as to insure, upon engagement with the stylus, that the latter will run into said groove 15 without injury to the parts or unnecessary Said groove 15 is so constructed and arranged as to deliver the stylus to the recordgroove when the arm 13 has returned said stylus to the starting portion of the sound-record and, to this end, the groove 15 is shown as provided with a right-angular prolongation 16, the bottom wall or which also reduced to a fine edge so as to deliver the stylus to the recordgroove without injury to the parts or unnecessary jar. To insure that the stylus will be properly retained in the groove 15 during the returning movement and to prevent the stylus umping from. the groove 15 when it first enters the same, the member 13 is preferably provided with a bifurcated member 17 of yielding material, such as rubber, coacting with the groove 15 to yieldingly retain the stylus in said groove. Said member 17, however, may yield at the proper time to permit the passage of the stylus from the prolongation 16.
Means are also preferably provided to adjust the initial position of the reproducerengaging member 13, which means may be of any suitable construction. In the form shown a slotted slide 18 is mounted on the member 8 by a threaded pin 19 passing through the slot of said slide and is retained in adjusted position by a thumb nut 20 threaded on said pin. To prevent rotation of the slide on the pin 19, a ledge or rib 21 may be formed on or secured to the member 8 in position to engage the lateral edge of said slide. Slide 18 is provided with an operating nose 22 which is designed to engage the arm 12 and predetermine its initial position. It preferred, the adjusting device might engage the member 13 without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Means are also provided for normally retaining the members 12 and 13 in engagement with the slide 18, said means also preferably operating as a returning device for said members after they have functioned to return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound-record. In the form shown a resilient or elastic band 23 is connected to the member 8 at 2st and to the member 13 at 25, said band passing through a staple or other suitable attaching means 26 on the arm 12. In place of a band as shown, however, a spring or other suitable device might be employed. Ihe members 8, 12 and 13 are so constructed that the members 12 and 13 will not pass beyond the proper position for releasing the reprod-ucer adjacent the beginning of the sound-record. In the form shown the members 12 and 13 are provided with cooperating shoulders 27 and 23 for limiting their relative outward movement and the member 12 is also provided with a shoulder 29 for coacting with a stop 011 the member 8 to limit the relative :outward movement or" said members 12 and 13. In the form shown said stop is provided by the adjustable slide 18.
Means are also preferably provided for determining the number or times the sound record will be repeated. In the form shown an element 30 is pivoted at 31 on the member 13 adjacent the groove 15 and is providcd with a plurality of arms adapted to project into the path of and be engaged by the stylus as it passes through the prolongation 16 out of the groove 15. The illustrated embodiment comprises only two arms 32, but it is to be expressly understood that any suitable number of arms may be provided in accordance with the number of times it may be desired to repeat the sound record. The element 30 is also provided with an arm adapted in one position to engage a stop 31 on the member 13 and retain one of the arms 32 as an obstruction to the passage of the stylus from the groove 15.
In operation member 8 is engaged with the projecting end of the spindle 3, the frictional collar 9 gripping the latter and insuring that the member 8, together with its attached parts, will rotate with the sound-record. Slide 18 is then adjusted to position the members 12 and 13 so that the groove 15 will engage the stylus 7 at the desired point in the reproduction, (see Fig. 3). Assuming that the stylus has traversed the record to the desired point, the member 13 as it rotates will engage the stylus and, owing to the thin edge of the bottom wall of the groove 15, said stylus will be received into said groove without appreciable jar. As the stylus enters the groove 15 it engages the yielding member 17 and the latter opposes a yielding resistance to the stylus jumping from or otherwise leaving the groove. The engagement of member 13 with the stylus stops the relative rotation of said member, but the continued rotation of the member 8 produces an outward movement oi": the members 12 and 13 owing to the reaction between the member 8 and the reproducer, said members 12 and 13 opening with respect to the member 8 like a toggle device, whereby the stylus is moved outwardly to the beginning of the sound-record, the members 12 and 13 being selected of a length such that the prolongation 16 will be in alinement with the desired outer groove of a sound record (see Fig. 1), when the shoulders 27 and 28 and the shoulders 29 and 18 engage. The stylus will be released from the groove 15, passin through the prolongation 16 and being gently deposited into the record groove, when the outward movement of the members 12 and 13 is limited by the engagement of said shoulders, the resistance opposed to the movement of the stylus from the groove 15 by the member 17 being insufficient to overcome the frictional grip of the collar 9 on the spindle 3. Immediately that the stylus passes out of the groove 15, 16, the resilient or elastic means 23 returns the members 12 and 13 to initial position, whereupon the repeating device is ready to again engage the stylus at the end of the reproduction.
The element 30 may be moved about its pivot 31 so that none of its arms is in the path of the stylus as it passes through the groove 15, 16, in which case the record will be repeated as long as the machine is in operation. On the other hand, said element may be turned into a position such that the stylus as it passes through the prolongation 16 will engage the first of the arms 32 and advance the element 30 in an anti-clockwise direction the distance between successive arms 32 (see Fig. Following a repetition of the record and the return of the stylus, the latter will engage the next arm 32 and advance the same, and so on until the arm 33 engages the stop 34:. In this latter position the last of the arms 32 is disposed so as to prevent the stylus leaving the groove 15, 16 owing to the positive stop provided by the arm 33 and stop 3 1 (see bottom portion of Fig. 1). The next time the stylus is returned to the beginning of the record it cannot become disengaged from the member 13, whereby further rotation of this member as well as the members 8 and 12 is prevented. The member 8 may now slip with respect to the spindle 3 and, by the frictional opposition to further rotation of the record-support at this point as well as where the member 13 is engaged with the record by the weight of the reproducer, opposes a braking resistance which eventually brings the record-support to a stop. In place of positioning the element 30 so that the first of the arms 32 will be engaged by the stylus at the end of the first repetition, any of the intermediate arms or the last of said arms may be positioned in the path of the stylus at the end of the first repetition, so that the record-support may be stopped at the end of the first repetition or at the end of any succeeding repetition up to a number corresponding to the number of arms 32 on the element 30. If further repetitions are desired, the element 30 is moved to a position wherein none of the arms 32 is in the path of the stylus as it passes out of the groove 15, 16, whereupon the repeating device will continue to operate as long as the machine continues to run.
lVhile the articulated members constituting the toggle device have been illustrated and described as comprising two connected relatively movable members12 and 13, it is apparent that the members 12 and 13 might be integral and the repeating device coniprise a single outwardly movable member articulated to the member 8 and constituting therewith a toggle without departing from the spirit of this invention. Therefore, Where the reproducer-engaging member is referred to as pivotally connected to the member mounted 011 and rotated with the record-support, it is to be understood as generic to constructions wherein said reproducer-engaging member is directly pivoted on said member engaging the recordsupport as well as where it is pivotally connected thereto by an interposed member articulated to both. Furthermore, while the repeating device has been illustrated and described as so constructed as to engage and slightly elevate the stylus, it is to be understood that the same may be so constructed as to engage any other suitable part of the reproducer without departing from the spirit of this invention. In fact, the invention is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions some of which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art while certain features are capable of use without other features thereof, referonce is therefore to be had to the appended claims for a definition of the limits of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A repeating device for talking machines comprising relatively movable members adapted to be mounted upon and rotated with the record support, one of said members adapted to engage the reproducer and, by its movement relatively to another of said members, return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record.
2. A repeating device for talking machines comprising articulated members adapted to be mounted on and rotated with the record support and, by articulation upon engagement with the reproducer, return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record.
3. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated therewith, and means pivoted on said member and cngageable with the reproducer, said last-named means by reaction between said member and reproducer operating to retur. the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record.
4:. A repeating defvice for talking machines comprising a toggle device adapted to be mounted on the record support and 1'0- tated thereby, one member of said toggle device adapted to engage the reproducer and, by the straightening of the toggle, return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record.
5. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, and a member pivotally connected to said first-member and adapted to engage the reproducer, said second member upon such engagement returning the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member.
6. A repeating device for talking 1na chines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to engage the reproducer, said second member upon such engagement returning the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, and means for returning said second member to initial position.
7. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to engage the reproducer, said second member upon such engagement returning the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, means for returning said second member to initial position, and means for adjusting said second member to predetermine the point at which said second member engages the reproducer.
8. A. repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to engage the reproducer, said second member upon such engagement returning the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, means for returning said second member to initial position, and means for predetermining the number of times said repeating device shall operate.
9. A. repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a plurality of members pivotally connected and pivotally mounted on said first member, one of said last-named members adapted to engage the reproducer and return the same to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, and means for returning said pivotally mounted members to initial position.
10. A repeating. device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connect ed to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a prceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, and means for returning said second member to initial position.
11. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated ther by, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation oi said first member, means for returning said second member to initial position, and means to adjust the initial position of said second member.
12. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, means to limit the stylusreturning movement of said second member, and means to return said second member to initial position.
13. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and provided with agroove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, means carried by said second member to yieldingly retain the stylus in said groove during the return movement, and means to return said second member to initial position.
A rep-eating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, and means carried by said second member to prevent the stylus from passing out of said groove.
15. A. repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rota tion of said first member, means mounted on said se cond member and movable to a position wherein it prevent the stylus from passing out of said groove, and means to return said second member to initial position when the stylus passes out of said groove.
16. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continuous rotation of said first member, an element pivotally mounted on said second member and provided with a. plurality of arms successively engageable by the stylus as it passes out of said groove, means to prevent rotation of said element in one position thereof whereby said element prevents said stylus from passing out of said groove, and means to return said second member to initial positiOll when the stylus passes out or said groove.
17. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connect ed to said first member and provided with a groove to receive the reproducing stylus, said second member returning said stylus to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, an element pivotally mounted on said second member and provided with a plurality of arms successively engageable by the stylus as it passes out of said groove, means to prevent rotation of said element in one position thereof whereby said element prevents said stylus from passing out of said groove, said element being movable into a position wherein it is not engageable by the stylus, and means to return said second member to initial position when the stylus passes out of said groove.
18. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a member pivotally connected to said first member and constructed toengage and elevate the reproducer, said second member returning the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, and means to return said second member to initial position.
19. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a member pivotally connected to said first member and constructed to engage and elevate the reproducer, said second member returning the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record by movement produced by the continued rotation of said first member, means whereby the reproducer is released at the preceding part of the sound record, and means to return said second member to its initial position.
20. A repeating device for talking inachines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to en gage the reproducer, said second member moving outwardly to return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record, and means to return said second member to initial position.
21. A repeating device for talking ma- ,ehines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to engage the reproducer, said second member moving outwardly to return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record, means to limit the outward movement of said second member whereby the reproducer is released, and means to return said second member to initial position.
22. A repeating device for talking machines comprising a member adapted to be mounted on the record support and rotated thereby, a second member pivotally connected to said first member and adapted to engage the reproducer, said second member moving outwardly to return the reproducer to a preceding part of the sound record, and mean to prevent the disengagement of said second member and reproducer whereby said repeating device is prevented from rotating and acts as a brake on the record support.
