Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 2, 1917. Serial No. 165,819.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. FATSOHER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at No. 1568 Warren road, city of Lakewood, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sand-Cutting Appliances, of which'the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions;
This invention pertains to a sand cutting appliance and the method of its use, both particularly adapted according to the exemplification disclosed by the drawings to molders sand as employed in foundries.
After the sand has served its purpose of holding the shape of a certain pattern and the casting has been poured it becomes necessary not only to remove the sand from the molders flask but to reseparate it into its component particles and to remix the same so that it has a more homogeneous character, as for example, its degree of moisture. It is still common practice to dump molders sand onto a heap and to then mix. the same by repeated shovel turnovers. One object of my invention is to cut or loosen the sand into its integral particles while the same is in a molders flask. Another object is to provide pneumatic conveyance and distribution thereof. A further object is to effect a continuity in the operation of cutting and conveying the same and to make provision for depositing the same upon one or more molding benches.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Interiorly the hopper has a partition or baflle 12 extending upwardly a given distance upon the inlet opening 7 and higher up another transom bafiie 13 which is so positioned as to be interposed between the inlet 7 and outlet 8.
A pneumatic nozzle 14 is provided with a head 15 in screw threaded connection therewith, such head having an enlarged conical nose 16 fashioned with equispaced apertures 17 such that a spider structure 18 composed of four divaricating extensions is formed. It is understood that the nozzle 14 as well as its head 15 are hollow and that the apertures 17 are in open communication therethrough. The nozzle 14 is r0- tatably mounted in two sets of ball bearings 19 and carries, fixed to itself between such bearings, a turbine rotor 20 movable in an annular chamber 21 with one side of which a flared impulse inlet 22 communicates. Any suitable motive fluid, such as compressed air, may be fed through a hose 23 to such inlet 22. Fixed in any feasible manner to one side of the supporting casing of the nozzle 14 is a socket 24 in which a handle 25 is secured. A portion 26 of the nozzle 14 extends beyond the bearings 19 and carries a disk 27 movable between ball bearings 28 which are held in place by a clamping structure 29, one part of which carries a nipple 30 so as to be in open communication with the end 26 of the nozzle. A flexible hose 31 connects the inlet 7 with the nipple 30 to which it is shown attached by means of a hose plant 32.
