To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL BLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston,in the county of Sufl'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Display-Covers for Containers of Various Types, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to display covers for containers of various types and more particularly to display covers for cracker boxes and the like of the type shown and described in my earlier application, Serial No. 827,517 filed March 27, 191-1.

The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a display cover of the character described wherein the glass or other transparent member, through which the goods in the package or receptacle may be viewed, can be readily-removed or replaced in case of breakage.

An additional object of the invention is the provision of means for readily and effectively positioning a pane of glass or other transparent material in a box display cover after the frame or cover is fully formed and without the use of auxiliary fastening members or materials.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent as it is'better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.

On the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a cover embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. I; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the pane of glass in the position in which it is placed preparatory to securing it in the cover and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cover in position upon a cracker box or other appropriate receptacle.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in a box display cover 5 adapted to be used in connection with a cracker box or other appropriate rectangular receptacle 6, the cover being detachably secured in place by hook plate 7 pivotally connected to the frame 8 of the cover at 9, the plate 7 and the method of connecting it to the cover, however, forming no part of my present invention.

In the present instance the cover consists of a body member or frame 10 having the downwardly extending flanges 11 adapted to engage over the open side of the box 6. The body portlon 10 is open centrally throughout the greater part of its superficial area and behind this opening a pane of glass 12 is secured. The opposite edges 13 of the glass rest 1n recesses 14 provided along parallel sides of the body 10. These recesses are formed by a pair of parallel ribs 15 and 16 disposed beneath the body 10 and in the present instance secured to opposite parallel flanges 11, one of these ribs 16 extending inwardly from its flange 11 a greater distance than the other 15 so that the recess at one side is deeper than the recess at the other. The width of the glass between the edges 13 is substantially less than the distance between the flanges 11 carrying the ribs, so that one edge of the glass may be inserted in the deeper recess 14 and moved down to adjacent its base and the other edge then moved toward the body 10 until it is opposite the other recess 14. A spring '17 or other yielding medium is secured in the base of the deeper recess and it is into this recess and against this spring that an edge of the glass s first inserted-in positioning it. The spring is compressed by the glass to permit it to enter the opposite recess 14 and when the glass is released the spring-expanding, holds it in position. The operation of positioning the glass is simple and permits the ready substitution of a new pane should one be broken in use. The ribs 15, 16 are angle plates in cross section having members which extend horizontall inward from the flanges 11, and members w ich extend vertically toward and engage the glass plate 12. The said horizontal members serve as rests to engage the top edge of the box or can. body 6 when the cover is closed, and the vertical members hold the glass plate away from the edge of the box, so that a slamming down of the cover will not break the glass.

It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore disclosed being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

I claim A box display cover comprising a hinged sheet metal angular frame adapted to inclose the open end of a box, said frame being bent at one edge to form an exterior inwardly extending flange, and being bent at the other edge to form a double flange torfit around the open end of a box, interior inwardly extending flanges at two opposite sides of the frame which form rests to engage the edge of the box and which are spaced from said exterior flange to form reoesses for retaining a removable glass plate, and a spring in one of said recesses. 10 Signed at Boston, Mass, this 22 day of May, 1914.
