In assembling my cutter head, I take knife 2 and place its surface against the surface 37 ofplate 3,1bringing the holes 33, into registry with selected'holes 32, so as to give me the desired'general projection of the knife edge to compensate for wear of the knife. I

It. sometimes happens after sharpening knives that the center portionof the knife at the'cutting edge islower than the outer edges. In other words,that the cutting edge above described. In removing knives from my cutter head I turn the set-screw 5in the oppos te (III'GC-V tion from that which tightened the wedge block 4:.- This movement because of the double thread of my set-screw, forcibly lifts the wedge block 4 out of its recess, and because of the angle of the axis of the set-screw 5 with respect to the plane of the knife, the
wedge b ock l is moved away from the knife, leaving the latter entirely free for its easy'removal. This feature is a decided advantage over-those now uin use, and greatly facilitates the easy removal of knives for I sharpening or replacements.
Now it will be clear that not only in making the general adjustment, to compensate for wear, by means of screws 14, and holes 32 and'33, but also in making the fine adjustment, by means of screws 16, all such adjustment can be made in the sharpening room and without stopping the planing machine. 'For instance, a separate set of knives can be maintained in the sharpening room, ready for insertion, and when they are inserted in the cutter head body, the knives will not only have the proper set projection of the cutting edge, but all the knives will have a uniform degree of projection from the cutter head, irrespective of wear of the knives.
It will also be noted that when the knife is being stressed to strengthen the cutting edge, the knife is rigidly held in a fixed positionon plate 3, by screws 14, and after the knife has been stressed until its edge is straightened, it is held by that means which has been employed to stress the knife. In other words, the knife is not released after its edge is straightened.
While I have herein described one specific embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto, except for such limitations as the claims may impart.
I claim:
1. In a rotary cutter head structure for planing machines, a cutter head body provided with a groove having a knife receiving portion and a wedge block receiving portion and the latter having a face inclined from the radial and lengthwise parallel with the knife, a knife for insertion into the knife portion of said groove, a wedge block for the block receiving portion of said groove and having an inclined face for engagement with the inclined face of said groove, and a set screw having right and left hand thread sections, one section having threaded con nection in said body and the other section having threaded connection in said wedge block, whereby rotative adjustment of said screw in one direction will. actuate said wedge block to wedge lock the knife, and rotative adjustment in another direction will positively loosen and hold said block in a loosened position and free from obstructing projection with respect to the knife portion of said groove.
2. In a rotary cutter head structure for planing machines, a cutter head body provided with a groove having a knife receiving portion and a wedge block receiving portion, a knife for insertion into the knife portion of said groove with the butt edge of the knife radially innermost and the cutting edge radially outermost, a wedge block for the block portion of said groove, and a differential set screw having threaded connection with said body and block and extending alongside said knife but at an angle 1,3115g5se:

4. In a rotary cutter head structure for planing machines, a cutter head body provided with a knife receiving groove, a knife and a knife holding plate adapted for insertion into said groove, and adjusting devices on said plate for engagement with a portion of said groove for regulating the set of said knife, whereby said knife may be adjusted to a set position prior to insertion into said head, and means for rigidly fastening said knife to said plate.
5. In a rotary cutter head structure for planing machines, a cutter head body provided with a knife receiving groove, a knife and a knife holding plate adapted for insertion into said groove, means forfastening said knife in different positions on said plate acording to the Wear of said knife to obtain general uniformity of set of all the knives prior to insertion into said body, and adjustable devices on said plates for engagement with a portion of said grooves for obtaining a uniform set of all the knives irrespective of the eXtent of wear.
6. In a rotary cutter head structure for planing machines, a cutter head body pro vided with a knife receiving groove, a knife and a knife holding plate adapted for insertion into said groove, means for fastening said knife to said plate in any one of a plurality of positions according to the extent of sharpening wear of said knife, and adjusting devices on said plate adjustable prior to insertion into the head and coacting with a portion of said groove for sup porting the knife at the proper set.
7. In a rotary cutter head structure for planing machines, a cutter head body provided with a' knife receiving groove, a knife and a knife holding plate adapted for insertion into said groove, means for fastening said knife to said plate in abutting re lation side by side and in any one of a plu rality of different positions according to the wear of said knife, said plate having an L- flange on its lower edge, and a plurality of adjusting screws in threaded engagement with said fiangevand adapted for abutment against the bottom of said groove to support said knife in the: required set positioirin said body..

In a rotary cutterliead structure for planing machines, a cutter head body having a groove provided with a knife and a wedge block portion, and a set screw having right and left hand threaded sections, one section engaging said body and the other section engaging said block, and said screw being set at such an angle that when loosening adjustment is applied thereto the screw will loosen the wedge block and draw it away from the knife portion of said groove.
