7 ATTACHMENT non RULERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed March 24, 1919. Serial No. 284,580.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, KENELY ELLSWORTI-I SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Rulers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in attachments for rulers, whereby the ruler may be used as a gage, square, miter, or bevel as the case may be, and will in either instance be eflicient in its operation.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the at tachment applied to a ruler,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attach ment with the parts separated,
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section through the attachment and the ruler.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with a folding ruler 1 of usual construction, consisting of the four sections folding upon each other. The attachment comprises a slide consisting of a disk 2 having connected therewith at opposite sides of the disks shoes 3 and 4, the said shoes having their inner faces substantially parallel and adapted to engage the opposite side edges of the folding ruler, with the disk resting upon the face of the ruler.
This disk has a central threaded opening 5, and it has extensions 6 on its upper face, the said extensions being integral with the disk and being segmental in contour, and rranged with their straight faces adjacent and parallel. A movable element is arranged on the slide, the said element consisting of a ring 7 having an extension 8 whose outer edge is straight, and tangential to the periphery of the ring. This ring has an inwardly extending web 9, and this web is designed to rest upon the upper surface of the disk, engaging about the extensions 6, the ring 7 fitting about the periphery of the disk.
A second disk 10 is arranged upon the web, the said disk 10 being of a diameter approximately the same as that of the disk 2, and this disk has an extension 11 on its under face which is shaped to fit between the extensions 6. The disk also has a central opening 12 which is adapted to receive a set screw 13 which is passed through the opening and engaged within the threaded opening 5 of the disk 2.
Thus by tightening the set screw, the ring may be clamped with the straight edge of the extension 8 at any angle with respect to the long axis of the ruler. The slide, consisting of the disk 2 and the shoes 3 and 4- is clamped upon the ruler by means of set screw 14. This set screw is threaded through the shoe 4 and engages a spring plate 15 which is secured at one end of the shoe as indicated at 16, the plate being adapted to engage the edge of the ruler to clamp the ruler between the shoe 2 and the plate when the set screw is turned in the proper direction.
The disk 10 has an indicator 17 in the form of a groove or notch in its periphery, and this indicator is adapted to cooperate with a scale 18 on the ring. The extensions 6 and 11 hold the disk 10 in a certain predetermined position with respect to the slide, and by turning the ring in one direction the graduations of the scale 18 may be brought into register with the indicator 17. The arrangement of the parts is such that the indicator 17 is at the center of the ruler and parallel with the long axis of the ruler.
In use, when it is desired to strike a bevel for instance, the set screw 13 is loosened, and the ring is turned to bring that graduation of the scale 18 into register with the indicator 17, and that will place the extension 8 at the desired angle with respect to the long axis of the ruler. The set screw is then tightened, and the device is ready for operation. The extension may be set square with the ruler or at any desired angle, and the graduations of the scale are arranged to indicate the desired angle. By loosening, the set screw 14: the entire attachment may be moved longitudinally of the ruler.
I claim 1. An attachment for rulers, comprising a slide having means for engaging the ruler to clamp the slide at any desired point in the length of the ruler, said slide including a disk arranged upon the ruler, a ring mounted to rotate on the disk, a second disk arranged above the ring, means in connection with the two disks for preventing angular movement of the disks with respect to each other, said ring having an extension with a straight edge, and means for clamping the two disks on the ring to hold the ring from angular movement, said ring and last named disk having cooperating means for varying the angle of the extension with respect to the ruler.
2. An attachment for rulers, comprising a slide having means for engaging the ruler to clamp the slide at any desired point in the len 'th of the ruler, said slide including a disk arranged upon the ruler, a ring mounted to rotate on the disk, a second disk arranged above the ring, means in connection with the two disks for preventing angular movement of the disks with respect "to each other, said ring having an extension with a 15 straight edge, and means for clamping the two disks on the ring to hold the ring from angular movement.
