Description

J. M. AKINx GAGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY9.I9I1. REIIEwED DEC. 2B, I9Is.
1,309,930. Patented July 15; 1919.
JAMES M. AKIN, 0F SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA.
GAGE.
Application led May 9, 1917, Serial No. 167,541.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. AKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Luis Obispo, in the countyof San Luis Obispo, State of California, have invented certain new andv useful Improvements in Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in measuring instruments and has particular reference to a gage.
An obj ect of the invention is the provision of an instrument, usually employed by carpenters for indicating miters and having means of novel construction adjustable thereon for indicating certain predetermined measurements.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the instrument constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 y'is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on an enlarged scale on the line 1 4 of Fig. 1. l
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts the numeral 5 indicates the-body portion of the instrument which is made of any suitable material, such as metal, and of an elongated substantially rectangular formation. The outer edge of the body portion 5 is provided with the graduations 6 as in the ordinary square. One end of the body portion is crimped or bent upon itself along its transverse edge as indicated at 7 and theremainder of said body portion is bent at right angles thereto to form the extension Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Renewed December 28, 1918. Serial No. 268,706.
8. The, bent end 7 provides a nger hold whereby the instrument may be readily manipulated by the user. One longitudinal edge of the body portion 5 adjacent the extension 8 is enlarged as indicated at 9 whereby to form a beveled edge 10 preferably arranged at an angle of 45 to the transverse end of said body portion whereby to form a ruling edge for the purpose of measuring miters.
The body portion 5 of the instrument is preferably provided with an elongated slot l1 extending for the greater portion thereof, the sides of said slot being beveled as indicated at 12 to receive therein a sliding block 13v of frusto-pyramidal formation, the inclined or beveled sides of said block engaging the sides of said slot. Extending from the upper surface of the block 13 is a screw threaded bolt 14 and mounted upon said bolt and extending transversely across the body portion 5 is a spring member 15 preferably having its intermediate portion spaced from the adjacent surface of the body portion 5 and its ends bent so as to engage said body portion. One end of the spring member 15 carries a scriber 16 which may be a pencil or other device and which is adapted to move over the graduations 6 and project through the openings 16 whereby to mark a piece of work with a desired measurement for purposes of cutting and otherwise. A thumb screw or wing nut 17 is mounted upon the bolt 14 and is adapted to engage the spring member 15 in order to cause the ends thereof to frictionally engage the upper surface of the body portion 5 whereby to prevent accidental vmovement of the scriber 16 after the device has been adjusted longitudinally in the slot 11.
What is claimed is An instrument of the class described comprising a body portion having a central longitudinally extending slot therein and a plurality of openings adjacent one edge, a block slidable in said slot and having a bolt extending therefrom, a spring member mounted on said bolt and extending transversely of said body portion and having its ends in engagement therewith and its intermediate portion spaced therefrom, a scriber carried by one end of said spring member In .testimony whereof, I aiiix my signaand adapted to project through any one of ture, 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
the openings 1n said body, and means JAMES M. AKIN. mounted upon said bolt yfor .engaging said Witnesses:
5 spring member to retain the same in ad- A. L. CARPENTER,
justed positions. L WILLIAM MALLAGH.
