ALBERT WANNER, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FITTING-STOOL.
1,301,203. l Y Y To all 'whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, ALBERT WANNER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at New vYork city, in the countyV of New York and State of New-York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Fitting-Stools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a tting stool, that is to say, an article of furniture on which one person may rest his foot while having shoes fitted, for example, and the person fitting the shoes may sit, which shall be simple and strongA in construction, artistic in appearance, and possess certain other advantages, such as provi ding asuitable receptacle in which to keep within the convenient reach of the person occupying the seat order books, button hooks, shoe horns and other similar imple-` ments. Y Y t My invention is characterized by a pair of separate parallel arched bentwood basal side members each bent to substantially the form of the curve of a conic section and having u one side of its arch arranged at a gradual incline and the other more precipitate, and means, rigidly connecting said members, including a seat arranged on the high parts and a foot rest arranged on the gradualincline parts of their arches; I prefer to form the foot rest as areceptacle having an opening adjoining the seat.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view of the improved ftting stool;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; and,
Fig. 8 is a plan view showing a part of the foot-rest broken away.
The base in the illustrated construction includes two bent-wood side members a a Varranged preferably to converge in plan (such convergence being simply a contribution to the artistic appearance of the stool, but being otherwise not especially material) and formed arched in side elevation in such manner that one end, as a', of each member approaches the floor or other-surface on which the stool rests at more or less of a right angle whereas the other end portion a is inclined so as to approach saidsurface at a more or less sharp acute angle.
These members a a are joined by a seat structure Z1 and a box or receptacle o.
The seat structure Z) may include two side Specication of Letters Patent.

standards (l, each in the present instance being a plate of wood suitably shaped to present the desired artistic effect and having a horizontal straight top edge e and a concave bottom edge f, the shape of which conforms with the convex upper rear surface of the corresponding side member a. Said seat structure also includes the seat proper g. The standards d may be secured to the side members a and the seat proper g to the side standards in any approved way, such as doweling, gluing, or by the use of screws, and the like.
The receptacle c is preferably constructed as follows: It it designates side standards of any form sui-ting some approved design. These rest respectively upon the side members a a in their inclined forward portion a a. Resting upon said side standards is a plate of wood z' forming the foot-rest proper. `Thetop edges of the side standards being inclined when assembled with the members a a as shown, the foot-rest proper i is also inclined, the angle of inclination being one that is suitable and comfortable to the person who, assumed to be sitting in a chair, has his foot resting on the foot-rest proper. Between the forward end portions of the standards h and connecting them and the members a is an upright pla-te of wood j, which' extends from the lower edges of the members a to the footrest proper z'. The standards 7L, the footrest proper z' and the plate j form the top, side and forward walls of the box or receptacle, the bottom wall of which, 7c, is preferably co-mposed of laminated plates of wood having their grain crossed (the idea being to make the bottom strong and proof against warping) and is set into opposite longitudinal grooves l in the members a, being glued or otherwise secured therein. The box is open at the back, as indicated at m in Fig. 2, so that the person occupying the seat of the fitting stool may have ready access to his order book and such other articles as may be kept in the box. To impart a finish to the back of the bottom wall Ic of the box, and also to brace the members a a, I provide the cross-piece n, which may be suitably secured, as by doweling, to said members and the standards 7L.
A cross-piece o, to brace the rear portions of the members a, is also preferably provided, being doweled into or otherwise secured to said members.`
left plain.
The seat proper g and foot-rest proper z' may be upholstered or padded, asv at p, ory g is a ridge of some suitable material attached to the front portion of the foot-'rest proper and serving as a heel support. l
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by rigidly connecting saidv members includinga seat arranged on the high parts and a foot.
rest arranged on the gradual-incline parts of their arches.
2i An article ofmanufacture. of the class described consisting of a. pair of separate parallel arched bentwood basal side members each bent to substantially the form of the curve of' a conic section and having one side of its arch arranged at a gradual incline and the other more precipitate, andmeans rigidly connecting said member-s including a seat arranged ony the high parts andI a foot rest arranged on the gradualincline parts oftheir arches, said. foot-rest being a receptacle having an opening adjoining the seat,
3. An article of manufacture of the class described consisting of a pair of separate parallel arched bentWood basal side members` each bent the curve of a' conic section and having one side of its. arch arranged at a Vgradual incline and the other more precipitate, and means rigidly connecting saidl members including a seat arrangedA on the high parts and a foot rest arranged; on thegradual ineline pants of'their arches, said seat having concave. underneath surfaces resting upon and conforming in contour With said' basal side members along their line of' greatest curvature.
4e. An article of manufacture ofthe class described consisting. of two; substantially counterpart upright side elements each incl-udingfan archedy por-tionk shaped to substantiallyI the form. of' the curve of: a conic section and havingr one-side oi' its arch arranged at.- a gradual incline. and the other more precipitate, in combination with a footrest member: and: a seat member connect-ing said elements arid'v arrangedi respectively over the gradual-incline and high parts of their arched portions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
