To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAY B. F. Sno- WALTER, residing at Pekin, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Cross-Referencing Tab Used in Systems of Indexing, of which the following is aspecification. i

My invention primarily has for its object to provide a convenient way of cross referencin books and other compilations of knowledge in a manner to make foot-note references unnecessary. In carrying out my invention, I provide a set-of twin tabs, one of the tab sections being adapted to be detached from the other; on one of the sections, 7 nated, is indicated as by title, page, verse or line, where it can be found; the other section of the twin tab is provided with identifying data showing where the reference section is to be placed in the book or compilation of knowledge which it is desired to cross reference or index as, for instance, the name of the volume, the page and the line where the quotation appears. These tabs are preferably formed in a sheet or sheets, perforated for'purposes of convenient 'separaet or sheets may be furnished with the'book having the quotations,

or it may be purchased as a separate article therefrom, or the tabs may be in indivldual twins rather than in sheet form.

The tabs may also be usedin filing systems and card systems for cross indexing or cross referencing the same, as will be later more clearly understood.

Figure 1 is a face View of a part of a sheet of twin tabs, one of which has been detached to show the two sections constituting the twins.

In the use of my invention for cross referencing books having quotations as, for example, a commentary on the Bible, which contains numerous quotations from the Bible, the reference tab A is provided with the necessary identification of the place where the quotation occurs, while the guide or indexing section B of the twin is provided with the necessary information showing where the reference tab is to be put. For example, consider the detached tab in Fig. 1. The section B indicates that the quotation found in the volume Miscellaneous on page 383 in line 3 is found at the place indicated on the reference tab section A namely: Genesis, chap. 1, 3rd verse. In using the reference sheets the possessor of the book containing the quotations detaches the twins and turns to the place indicated on the guide section B and pastes the reference section A in the margin of the book opposite the quotation (see Fig. 3) after tearing then be thrown away, or the guide section B may be itself used as a cross reference by pasting it in the volume from which the quotation was taken. For example, if the quotation is taken from the Bible, the tab B may be pasted in the Bible at the margin where the chapter and verse indicated by tab A occurs. In this way, the tab B may be made to perform the additional useful function of indicating where the matter has been quoted.

The same idea or system can be applied for indexing files of various natures and for illustrating purposes, I have illustrated a file in which specifications for the iron work on a certain building have been filed away (see Fig. 5). As bids are received for this work from different parties, their bids are, of course, filed in the properfile under the names of the parties bidding. The clerk opening the bids, takes the sheet shown in Fig. 4; and opposite the work referred to by the bid, he jots down on the reference tab section A the necessary identification of the file where the bid has been filed away and on the guide tab section B he indicates the file and job where the reference tab section A is to be put. The file clerk on receiving the off the guide section B which may which is the guide tab and the other is the reference or indexing tab.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention .Will be readily understood by those skilled n the art.

What I claim is:

1. In indexing twin tabs each composed of a reference section and a guide section, the reference section containing reference information and the guide section containing directions as to Where said reference information section is to be put for reference purposes.

2. In indexing and cross-referencing books,

twin tabs each composed of a reference sec tion and a guide section, identification data on the guide section indicating the place Where the matter to be cross-referenced is contained, the reference section being provided with data indicating Where the reference originated or can be found, said guide section and said reference section having an indicating line along which the sections are separable whereby the reference section can beattached to the book at a place opposite to the matter to which the reference section has relation, as indicated by the guide sec tion data.

4. As a new article, a sheet of twin reference tabs adapted to be separated, each of said twin tabs consisting of a reference-section and a guide section having an indicating line along which the sections are adapted to be separated the one from the other, the

reference section being a permanent section and the guide section having indicating matter showing Where the reference section is to be placed, the reference section having suitable reference data on the same.

5. A means for cross-referencing books, which means comprises twin tabs each composed of a reference section and a guide sec tion, the two sections having an indicating line on which the sections are adapted to be separated one from the other, the guide section having identification data correspond ing to the place where the matter to be crossreferenced is contained, the reference section of the tab having reference can be found, the reference section being adapted to be attached to the book at a place opposite to the matter to which the reference section has reference and the guide section being adapted to be attached to the book from which the reference matter is taken.
