UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ABBOT R. DAVIS, OF EAST CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESERVlNG-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,214, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABBOT R. DAVIS, 0 East Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Preservin g-Gans, 8nd, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had. to the accompanyin g drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, showing the metallic rim around the mouth of the fibrous can, and the metal top soldered thereon. Fig. 2 is a section of same.
My invention consists in applying a metallic ring to the mouth of a preserve-can or receptacle made ofpaper, cloth, wood, or other fibrous material rendered air-tight and impervious to water, so as to strengthen the mouth of the can and allow a metal plate to be soldered over the mouth for the purpose of closing it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make 7 and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
A can, box, or other receptacle, A, of paper, cloth, wood, or other fibrous material, of the required size, shape, and thickness, is made. The opening in the top is then provided with an annular disk, B, Figs. 1 and 2, which is secured thereto by shellac or otherwise. The opening 0 therein is then closed by a circular metallic plate, d, soldered in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic annular disk B and the metal plate (I, in combination with the preserve-can made of fibrous material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 29th day of April, A. D. 1872.
In presence of- ABBOT R. DAVIS.
