Description

UNITED; sTArrEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH G. ALLMON, or OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
in wrenches and more particularly to an article of this character which is adapted for use in connection with pipe fianges. It will be understood that flanges for which my wrench is adapted, are provided with bolt holes and are in Screw-threaded engagement with the supporting pipe.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a tool by which pipe flanges may be readily screwed to the supporting` pipe or removed therefrom. A further object of my invention is to Aso arrange the various parts that a pin which is inserted in one of the bolt holes of the flange is not subject' to a twisting action, and a still further obi ject is to provide a wrench whichis strong in construction, easily applied to the work, and which gives the maximum strength for a given weight.
,With hese and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described andmore specifically pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that changes in form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Reference being ha to the drawing forming a part of this specification, f Figure 1, is a view in perspective ofl my improved wrench.
Fig. 2, isa view in plan of the same showing also the manner in which it is applied on a pipe flange.
Fig 3` is a view in side elevation.
l Referring to the corresponding parts by the same numerals, the wrench comprises a fiat head denoted in general by 1, a handle 2 and an intermediate polygonal portion 3. Adjacent the forward end of the head 1 are provided pins 4 and 5, extending outwardly from opposite faces of this head and of such diameters that they fit closely in the bolt holes of different sized standard flanges.
This head is substantially wedge-shaped Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 14, Application filed February 11, 1918. Serial No. 216,490.
in contour 'with the pins 4 and near thc narrow end and the wide end connectin to the intermediate portion 3. On thcsides of the wide end of the head are lugs 6 and 80 7 which extend from opposite faces of the head l and are provided on their outer ends with inwardly extending lips 8.
The distance between the face of the head and the underside of the lips 8 is -substan- 65 tially equal to the thickness of the iange, A the bolt-holes of which correspond in diameter to that of the respective pins 5 or 4.
, The upstanding'portion 9 of each of these lugs is preferably arranged with its inner metrically disposed on either side of the longitudinal median line of the tool` which makes it necessary that the smaller piny be set back of the larger. as the flanges having the smaller diameter have the smaller boltholes. However, if desirable, the pins 4 and 5 could he made in one, and the lug 7 which 80 coacts with the pin 4 could be placed correspondingly near the lsmall end of the head.
In use, one of the ins, as 5, is inserted in the bolt hole 11 of ange 10 and the corre- 85 sponding lug as 6 is engaged on the outer periphery'of the said flange. Then, by exertj ing pressure on the outer end of the handle in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2, the flange may be turned on the pipe 12. I am aware that heretofore wrenches for this purpose have been used which were provided with a lug designed to engage the periphery of the'iiange. With these devices, however, the lug is on the longitudinal median line of the wrench, consequently when pressure is applied, a twisting action is extelrted on the pin which is inserted in the boltoles. l
By making the head wide across the base and positioning the engaging lug to one side vof the longitudinal centerline, I overcome claim as new andwish to cover by Letters Patent l. A flange wrench comprising a head having a face adapted to rest against the face of the flan-ge, a handle in longitudinal alinement with said head, a pin extending outwardly from the face of said head adapty cd to engage openings in the flange, and a lug adapted to engage the peripheral edge of the flange, said lug extending outwardly from the face of said head' at one side of the longitudinal median line thereof.
2. A flange wrench comprising a head, a` handle, a pin extending outwardly vfrom one of the faces of said head, a lug positioned' laterally with respect to the longitudinal median line of said head and extending outwardly from the face thereof parallel to said pin, and an inwardly extending lip on the outer end of said lug.
3. Allang'e wrench comprising a head having a face adapted to rest against the face of the flange, a handle in longitudinal aline- 'mcnt with said head, a pin projecting from the face of said head, a lug projecting from the same face of said head parallel to said pin and having a face at an acute angle to the longitudinal median line of the wrench and tangential to a circle, the center of which is in the axis of said pin, and a laterally extending lip on the outer end of said lug.
QA flange wrench comprising a substannaeneee having a face adapted to rest against the face of the ange, a handle extending from said head, a pin projecting from the face of said head at the opposite end from said handle, and a lug projecting from the same face of said head at one side of thefmedian line thereof.
6. A ange wrenchcomprising a head, a handle, a pin extending outwardly from one of the faces of said head, and a lug positioned laterally with respect lto the longitudinal median line of said head and extending outwardly from the face thereof parallel to said pin.
7. A flange wrench comprising a sulostan-` tially wedge-shaped head, a handle joining said head at the wide end thereof, a pin disposed in the longitudinal median line of said head and extending outwardly from the face thereof atthe small end, and a lug extending outwardly from the face of said head at the edge ofthe wide end thereof.
ln testimony whereof l aflixl my signature. JSEPH G. ALLMN.
