GEORGE ALFRED WHEELER, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS. v
IMPROVEMENT IN CELL-COVERS FOR SEWlNG-MACHINE TABLES- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,833, dated July 9, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Cell-Covers for Sewing-Machines, &c., invented by GEORGE ALFRED WHEELER, of Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts.
My invention consists of a series of cells in sewing-machine or other tables, arranged in a row, with sliding covers all moving in the same directions for opening and closin g, and a spring, acting on one cover and communicating motion to any or all the said covers for closing them, all as hereinafter described.
- Figure 1 is partly a plan view and partly a horizontal section of a table or other article having a series of cells with covers and closing apparatus, arranged according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section on the liueww.
Similarletters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
' A, B, and G represent a series of cells arranged in a row under a table, 1), and along one edge, each having a separate cover, F G H, &c., all of said covers being arranged to slide in the same directions on the edges of the table D and the bottom piece M, said covers moving, in this example, to the left in opening, and to the right in closing. N is a spring, behind the cover F,which is compressed when any one or all of the covers are moved in that direction, and by its expansion closes them when let go after being opened. The cover F only maybe pushed back by itself in case it is the cell' A to which access is desired,
or F and G will be pushed back together in case B is the cell to be opened, and so on. In this case the spring is coiled around a studpin, 0, immovably fixed in the end piece 1? of the case, and the cover F has a hole coinciding with the pin and allowing said cover to be pushed back over the pin; but any other equivalent arrangement will answer as well, and a flat spring may be used instead of a coiled one.
All the covers may be secured in the closed position by a lock or other fastening, applied to cover F.
My invention is intended for sewing-machine tables more particularly than others; but it is applicable to any work-table, desk, or other table where it is desirable to have a series of cells in a row. This arrangement of cells and covcrs is also desirable without the spring for closing them self-actin gly, for the facility it affords of fastening them all shut by one fastening device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the series of cells'A B 0, arranged in a row under a table, D, the sliding covers F G H, and the spring N, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE ALFRED WHEELER.
