' 6 of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a vehicleor apparatus which may be described generally as a submersible or submarine boat which is provided with means whereby it may run on the land and may also fly.
vide a vehicle or apparatus of the character indicated, which is adapted to operate under water, on land, or in the air, and which will be comparatively simple in construction as well as durable and eflicient in operation. Other objects will appear more fully from the following description, and from the accompanying illustrations showing a pre 'ferred form of my invention. In these drawings:

Fig. 3 is a plan view;
Fig. 4 is a front elevation with the wings or planes shown in flying position; and
Fig. 5 is a front elevation with the wings or planes shown in folded position as when the vessel is to submerge.
As illustrated inthese drawings, 6 represents a hull or body which is preferably made somewhat in the shape of a fish so that it will move readily through the water, either on the surface or when submerged. This hull or body is of course' made sothat it can be closed to be air-tight, and is provided with a conning tower 7. It is also preferably provided with a periscope 8, and with masts 9 for wireless telegraph apparatus.
The hull has a propeller 10 at the rear end for driving it through the water. This propeller may be driven in any convenient manner as by means ofa motor 11. Horizontally arranged propellers 12, 13, and 14 are positioned along the bottom of the hull and serve to elevate or depress the hull, and also to' assist in guiding it in a vertical direction. These propellers may be driven by means of motors 15, 16 and 17 r pectively.
The objects of this invention are to pro- A "ertically arranged rudder 18 is mounted at the rear end of the body, and horizontally arranged rudders 19 and 20 are arranged at either side thereof. These rudders may be operated in any convenient or well known manner, and serve the usual purposes of such rudders in guiding the vessel in horizontal and vertical planes.
When the apparatus is to be utilized as a flying machine, it is driven by one or more propellers such as the propellers 21 and 22 which are arranged at the forward .end of the vehicle in the manner of tractors, and are driven in'any suitable manner as by means of motors 23. The propellers 12, 13 and 14 may assist in raising and lowering the vehicle when in the air, but it is. also provided with wings 0r planes 24 and 25. These planes are preferably hinged to the body, as indicated at 2.6 and 27, so that they 'may be raised and lowered, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. A cable 28 is connected to the plane 24., and leads over a sheave 29 down to a winding drum 30 in the hull. Another cable 31 leads from the outer end of the plane down and around a sheave 32 and to the winding drum 30. Another cable 33 leads from the plane 25 up and over a guide sheave 34, and down to the winding drum 30. Another cable 36 leads from the outer end of the plane 25 down and under the guide sheave 37 and to the winding drum 30. The arrangement is such that when the drum is turned in one direction, the lower cables will be wound up to swing the planes to horizontal position, while the u per cables are correspondingly paid out. en the drum is turned in the opposite direction, the reverse act-ion occurs and the planes will be swung up to raised-position,:-as shown in Fig. 5. It'will be understood that a plurality of cables and drums may be utilized in accordance with my invention for raising and lowering, and holding or supporting the planes, but the above illustrates ,a simplified form of operative mechanism. The hull or body is preferably provided adjacent to the front end with a compartment 38 for the operator when the vehicle is to be used on land or as a flying machine. This compartment is provided with an air tight cover 39 for closing the same.
The hull or body has a deck 40 on which are mounted certain portions of the operat ing mechanism, and which also stipports one or more guns 41 arranged to, be operated vthrough port holes 42 in the sides of the hull. Other guns 43 and 44 may also be mounted on the deck 40 and operated through port holes 45 and 46 in the top in order to be used for anti-air-craft purposes.
The body is also provided with wheels and axles 47 and 48 so that it may run on the ground, and power may be applied to such wheels in the usual manner (not shown) or the propellers may be used for driving the vehicle on land. The electricity for the motors may be supplied from batteries 49 or any other suitable power may be utilized for operating the various propellers and controlling mechanism.
From the above description it will be seen that I provide an exceedingly useful and novel craft which will serve a wide variety of purposes. It Wlll also be noted that changes may be made in the arrangement of parts or details of construction without departing from the scope of my invention, and therefore I do not .wish to be limited to the exact construction or arrangement herein a submersible. and having wheels for supporting the same for running on land, said hull also having'a vertically arranged propeller at the rear end, and a plurality of of horizontally arranged propellers underneath the same, and vertically arranged air propellers at the front thereof with means for operating said propellers, and also being supplied with folding planes hinged longitudinally thereof and adapted to swing upwardly to permit the vehicle to submerge, and means for operating said planes.
2. In an apparatus of the character described adapted to serve as a flying machine and submarine boat, the combination of an air-tight body or hull, a water propeller at the rear end of said hull for driving the same longitudinally, a plurality of water propellers arranged along the bottom of the hull for assisting in raising and lowering the same, means for driving said propellers,
planes hinged longitudinally of the body and adapted to swing upwardly to folded position when the apparatus is to submerge, means operable from within the body for ,swinging said planes, and vertical and horizontal rudders mounted on said' hull for guiding the same.
