To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HENRY, a
of New York city, Ridgewood Heights, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Wires, of which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to certain new and usefulimprovements in clamps for wires and the object of my inventionis to provide such which grips said w1re's.0r conductors firmly, holds and clamps them in position so as to insure perfect contact between the conductor and the clamp and the article to which the clamp is fastened, for example an electric battery or an electric bell, or other electrical appliance, which-clamp permits of 'the wire or conductor being readily inserted into the same or removed from the same.

- A strip 1 of spring metal is provided with longitudinal cuts which extend preferably from one end to within a short distance of the other end of the strip, thereby forming three'longitudinal members 2, 3. and 4. The central member end of the upperv or movable member'6 of the U-shaped part 3 the material of which this upper member 6 is formed and which is above that part of the plate from. which of the U-shaped part 3 and of another modifia longitudinal groove,

the U-shaped part 3 1s bent upward, is doubled over on the underside of the upper 7 member 6 of the U-shaped part 3 to form a tongue 8 which extends inward into the U- shaped part 3 and downward from the free end of the movable member 6 so and rests upon the plate 1- adjacent to the fixed end of the U-shaped part 3, whereby when pressure is brought to bear upon-the free end of themember 6 of the U-shaped part 3, the inner end of the tongue 8 will i u thatthe free end of the tongue 8 1s in contact with slide on the plate 1 from which the U-shaped part 3 extends upward on a curved line. The parts being made of spring metal the inherent spring tension in 3 will tend to press'the free end of the upper member 6 upward after the same has been depressed and then released. This tension is greatly increased by the tongue 8, which extends into the U-shaped part 3 and bears on the upper surface of the plate 1, from which the U- haped part 3 extends and at the same time this tongue 8 stiffens the movable end of the U-shaped part and increases its strength and its spring tension. A U- shaped slot 9 is out in the front end of the plate 1 and across said front end, in advance by making said U-shaped slot or out 9, a U-shaped yoke '10 is formed which is then bent up at ri it angles so that itsclosedend or cross piece '11 extends over the upper member 6 of the il shaped part 3. The top piece 11 of this yoke 10 is either curved or bent V-shapedas at12. Against this top piece 11 of the yoke 10 the upper member 6 of the U-shaped part 3 is pressed by its spring tension and that of the tongue 8. Preferably the upper member 6 of the u shaped part 3 is provided with indentation or recessed part 13. When the free end of the upper member-6 of the U-shaped part 3"is depressed and moved away from the cross piece 11 of the yoke 10, a wire 15, shown in dotted lines, can be rested on the up er memid along below'the cross piece 11 of the yoke 10. If then the free end of the upper member 6. of the U-shaped Hart 3 is released, the spring tension of the shaped part 3 and its tongue 8 presses the wire against the bottom edge of the cross piece 11 of the yoke 10 and thus. the-wire 15 is held firmly and securely.' In the construction shown in Figs. -t and 5 the side members 2 and 4 of the plate'l are .bent up to form two abutments 16. Other- In the modification shown in F 6 the base plate 4: is at right angles to the U shaped part and the'upper ends ofthe sides ,of the base plate are bent over to form retaining hooks 17, against which the upper member 6 of the U-shaped part3 can press the Wire 15.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the side members 2 and 4 of the plate 1 are also bent upward to form V-shaped abutments 19 under which the wire 15 can be passed and said Wire is pressed against the closed 4 top ends of said abutmen'ts by the upper member 6 of the U-shaped part The plate 1 is secured to the part or article to which the clamp is to be fastened in various ways, for example, a plate 20 can be rested upon .theside members 2 and i so as to overlap the-same and a screw 21 passed through said vThe constructions shown in Figs. 6 and '7 are particularly adapted to the attachment of the clamp to the edge of the plate.

A spring clamping device for wires, consisting ofa strip of resilient material, s otted and bent to form a U-shaped member which at its free end is bent inward and I downward to form a tongue resting with its free end on the bottom of the U-shaped member, parts of said strip being slotted and bent upward to 'form a yoke extending across the free endifof said U shaped inemher, the top piece of said. yoke being bent .out of the plane of the two upright members of the yoke, substantially as set forth.
5. A spring clamping device foriwiies consisting of a strip of resilient material slotted and bent to form a U-shaped memher which at its free end is bent inward and downward to form-a tongue restingwith its free end on the bottom of the U-shaped member, parts of said strip being slotted and bent to form a'U-shaped yoke extending across'the free end of the upper member of the lJ-shaped part and to form on the of the base of the U-shaped yoke-and below the free end of the upper spring member of the U-shaped part, substantially as setv forth.
