Be it lrnown that l, Bnnenr H. Bnoonsonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Sleeping-lBags and Mattresses, of which the fol lowing is a specification. I

The object of this invention is, primarily, to provide a combined sleeping bag and mattress which is light in Weight, simple in construction and compact in form and is especially adapted for use in the army and for camping purposes generally.

Another ob ect is to provide a device of this character which will not only be comfortable and restful to the occupant but will fully protect him, when used in the open, against bad weather.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which can be used on a cot as well as on the ground, in the barracks and in the field, and-which can be quickly rolled into a small bundle for transporting and as easilyopened u for use.

.And a still further 0 ject is to construct the device so that it can be used as a receptacle for bed clothes and clothing which can be rolled up therein for transporting and fully protected in a secure and compact roll.

Referring to the drawings the mattress comprises a filler 5 and a covering Gand is made of suflicient width to accommodate the average man and about six and one-half feet long. The filler is preferably hair but ll may use any other suitable filler such as cotton, cotton felt or shoddy. The covering is preferably made of waterproof material such as army duck, but any other suitable material may be used.

The filler is laid upon the mattress covering and the pillow covering 11 is then sewed or otherwise secured at its edges to the mattress covering. i

The mattress forms the bottom of the bag which comprism a main or body flap consistin of the top 12, the side 1?; fastened at its e ges to the mattress and the top, the side it fastened at one edge to the top and for a portion of its other edge to the side edge of the mattress, and the foot end 15 fastened at its edges to the mattress, the top and the sides of the flap.

At the head end of the bag there is provided a hood for covering the head which consists of an end 16 fastened to the mattress and the side 13, and a flap 1'? fastened to the end 16 and also to the side 13 for a distance from the head end of the mattress and where said side is fastened to the top 19;.

The construction of the main flap with its sides and ends provides that desired fullness which is required to accommodate the occupant comfortably and enables the occupant to move and turn over without disturbing anyof the parts of the bag. The lower end ofthe bag provides a pocket in which extra blankets, clothing or other things may be conveniently stored, and they will be protected against the weather and against loss. This pocket also serves the purpose of confining the occupants feet against accidental exposure and at the same time prevents discomfort and allows free dom of movement. Tapes 18 or other suitable fastening means are provided for securing the free edge of the main flap to the mattress.

llllb The hood is provided to cover the head of a the occupant as a protection against the not in use it can be thrown out of the way over the upper edge of the pillow.

The device is intended to be rolled upon itself into a roll for transporting and I provide tapes 20 to secure it in this form. These tapes are preferably secured to the mattress covering at the foot end thereof or in any other convenient position for tying, but they may be used separate or other suitable means may be substituted therefor.

' The invention provides a comfortable device of this character which can be easily and quickly made ready for use and which is capable of being formed into a compact and secure roll for transporting. It will be readily appreciated that clothes, blankets and other things may be rolled u in the device for transporting and that t ey will be fully protected against loss, dirt and the weather. The construction is such that the mattress and bag maybe well aired and cleaned and yet there are no-separate or detachable parts which might easily be lost. The device may be used on the. ground or on a floor or on a cot or even in a hammock, and when rolled for transporting it is in convenient form for handling.

The invention has a further important advantage of being light in weight, it having been demonstrated that the device can be satisfactorily made, weighing about fourteen pounds, and since it can 'be easily rolled into a comp-act bundle for transporting and quickly prepared for instant use it has been found to be especially adapted for army service. It will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit-and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the material advantages thereof, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodi ment thereof.

I claim:

1. A sleeping bag comprising a mattress forming the bottom of the bag, a body covering including a side fastened to the mattress, and a hood fastened to the head end of the mattress and to the adjacent end of said side of the body coverin and also to said side for a distance from the head end of the mattress and beneath said covering.

2. A sleeping bag comprising a mattress forming the bottom of the bag, a pillow consisting of a filler laid upon the mattress and a covering for the pillow secured to themattress, a body covering having neath the top and above the pillow.
