To all whom may concern:

Be -it known that I, WILLIAM lnlrrm` FIFE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at VVallasey village, 1n the county of Chester and Kingdom of England., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Tools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to edge tools of the kind having a blade provided with a knife edge and a serrated or saw edge, and the object of the invention is to provide such tools with a handle which can be converted from a handle of the haft type to a handle of the type suitable lfor operating a saw, and vice versa.

According to this invention the handle, having the appearance of an ordinary knife handle or haft handle, is formed of two parts, longitudinally divided, one part beingsecured to the saw-knife blade and the other part hinged to this fixed part at the outer ends of the same. The hinged or movable partL can be turned about this hinge into an inclined position, having the appearance of a handle of the type suitable for operating a saw, and is securedin this position by a strut or connecting piece formed of two links joined together and pivoted at the ends to the inner ends of the movable and the fixed parts, the joint being locked `by an extension on one link provided with a pin adapted to engage a hole or holesfin the other link..` When the parts are brought together, having the appearance of an ordinary knife handle, the folded links, engage or fit into recesses formed in the movable and fixed parts, the parts being locked in this position by a spring catch or other suitable means. rll`he central portion of the movable part is rounded ofi in cross section and a corresponding recess is formed in the fixed part to receive the contact portion of the same. l

Referring to the drawings, which represent a preferred construction of a sawknife made according to this invention, 2 represents the blade of the saw-knife which is provided with a knife-edge 3 and a serrated or saw-edge 4. ri`he handle of the saw-knife is composed of two longitudinal parts, the part 5 being secured to the blade 2 and the part 6 hinged at 7 to the fixed part 5. `When closed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, these parts form the ordinary handle of the saw-knife when used as a knife;

shown in Fig. 4, into a saw-like handle, the movable part 6 forms the handle. rlfhe movable or turnable part 6 is secured in the raised or inclined position or the more or lless vertical position by a strut 8, Figs. 4.

12 and 12. rihe single link 10 has an extension 13. rlFhe links are locked together in alinement by means of aT stud 14, made of hardened steel, secured in the extension 13 and provided with rounded or spherical ends which project from the sides of they extension. The rounded or spherical ends of the stud 14 engage, when, the links are .forced into alinement, with corresponding recesses in the inner sides 'of the links 12 between which the extension 13 works. A limiting stop 15 is provided in oneof the links 12 which engages with the end of the extension 13 and thereby facilitates the location of the stud ends and the corresponding recesses. The .parts of the handle are locked together in the closed position by means of the extension 13 engaging. with a Hat yspring 16 fixed in a recess formed in the fixed part 5.

The handle of the saw-knife may be made of any suitable material such as metal, wood, The teeth ofthe blade may be formed in the'opposite direction to -that shown in the drawings, in which case ico handle.

I declare that what I claim is y l. An edge tool having a blade provided with a knife edge and a serrated or saw edge, a handle carried by the blade, and having a movable portion adapted to form the saw handle.

A saw-knife having a handle formed of two longitudinal parts hinged together at their outer ends, one part being fixed at its inner end to the blade of the saw-knife and the other part adaptedito be raised or turned into an inclined or more or less vertical position, and means for locking the movable part in suc-h a position, substantially as described.

4. In a Asaw knife. the combination with the blade, of a handle formed of two longitudinal parts, one part being fixed at its outer end to the blade, and the other part hinged to the fixed part, so that it can be raised, and a jointed strut coupled at one end to the fixed part and at thel other end to the hinged part for locking th`e hinged part in a raised position when the two parts Aof the strut are in alinement.

. 5. In a saw knife, the Acombination with the blade, of a handle formed of two longitudinal parts, one of which is fixed to the blade and the other part hinged to the fixed part and having recesses in their abutting faces, and a jointed strut coupled on opposite ends to the fixed part and hinged part respectively, and so arranged as to fold or t into recesses in the folded and fixed parts when the two parts of the handle are. closed together, or to be extended and locked in alinement when the hinged part is turned into the raised position.

6. In a saw knife, the combination with the blade, of a handle `formed of two longitudinal parts, one of which is fixed to the blade and the other part hinged to the fixed part and having recesses in their abutting faces, a jointed strut coupled at opposite ends to the fixed part and the hinged part respectively, an extension member proJecting from one of the parts of the strut at the joint and adapted to limit the outward movelnent of the same, and a spring fixed in the recess in the fixed part of the handle for locking the two parts of the handle in the closed position.

7. An edge tool having a blade provided with a knife edge and a saw edge, a handle rigidly secured to the blade, and a movable 4'member carried by the handle and adapted to be moved in a position at an angle thereto to form a handle when used as a saw.
