Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. STONE- BRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and

residing at New York, .in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeping-Bags, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a

This invention relates to sleeping bags and particularly devices of this class used for outdoor sleeping by soldiers, campers and others, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this class having parts to be attached or.laced,.with closure means for sealing said attached or laced portions to prevent the entrance of water or moisture into the bag when extended for use or folded and shipped from place to place; and a further Ob ect of the invention is to provide. a sleeping bag, one side and the head and foot ends of which are openand adapted to be closed by attaching devices in the usual manner, after which said 0 enings may be sealed, or made watertight by a closure means as above set out.

The invention, is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms'a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designatedby suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which 1 Figure 1 is a lan view of a sleeping bag in its extende position and partially closed;

The body 10 is provided longitudinally of the opening 13 with sealing flaps l4 and 15, the foot ends of which are secured together as shown at 16. The flaps are formed integral with the material of the body 10 and are folded outwardly stitchin s as shown at 17 and 18 to form a longitu 'nal pocket 19 and a longitudinal hem 20 on the edge portions of the flaps 14 and 15 respectively. The upper or outer member of the pocket 19 is provided with a plurality of eyelets 21 spaced longitudinally thereof while the hem 20 is rovided with a plurality of corresponding y spaced eyelets 22, this construction being clearly shown in Figs. 1, 4 and 5.

The head opening 12 when closed in the manner above set out may be sealed by placing the flaps 26 and 27 one upon another above set out and as indicated in Fig. 3, the

only place that water'may possibly enter the sleeping bag. is at the point 35 in Fig. 3, where the longitudinal flaps 14 and 15 meet the transverse flaps 26 and 27, but when folding or rolling up the sleeping bag for shipment, or other purposes, the usual head inclosing hood 36 1s first folded inwardly upon the top of the body 10 and said body is then rolled or folded from the head end to the foot end thereof which will bring the point 35 within the central portion of the body formed by rolling or folding the bag and therefore it will be readily seen that it will be practically impossible for water or moisture to enter the bag. I

It will also be apparent that the sealing means consisting of the flaps 142 and 15 with the longitudinal opening at 13' may be partially closed when the bag is used by the owner for sleeping purposes, especially when the owner desires to use the same on a stormy night, and said sealing flaps may be closed in the manner shown in Fig. 2, or partially so, in the use of the bag as above set out.

In Fig.6 of the drawing, if have shown the foot end portion 11 of the bag open and provided with top and bottom flaps 26 and 27 of the same form and construction as the corresponding flaps at the head end portion of the body, said flaps being stitched to the body as shown at 28 to form a pocket 29 on the flap 27' and a hem 30 on the flap 26. The pocket 29 is provided with spaced eyelets 31 and the'hem 30 with spaced eye lets 32, and a cord is secured within the pocket 29 and provided at intervals with loops 33 passed through the eyelets 31 and also adapted to be passed through the eyelets '32 to secure the top and bottom portions of the foot openings 11 together. It will be understood that the foot opening 11 as shown in Fig. 6 may be closed by rolling the flaps 26 and 27 together and holding them in such position by straps 34.

With the construction shown in Fig. 6 1 provide a sleeping bag which is approximately of the same character as a blanket roll and by providing the open foot end portion, the bag maybe entirely open for venmenses tilation or other purposes, whenever desired,

and this construction will also facilitate the placement of blankets and the like within the bag as well as facilitating the airing of common means of attaching or connecting the separate side portions of the openings of said bag, my invention is not limited to these details of construction, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from thespirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and de'sireto secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A sleeping bag composed of a body provided with a longitudinal side opening, flaps formed integral with said body at the opposite sides of said opening, means for connecting the separate sides of said opening, said flaps being adapted to be rolled together to provide a water-tight closure for said opening, andmeans for holding said flaps in their rolled position.

2. Asleeping bag composed of a body provided with a longitudinal side' opening and a transverse end opening, flaps formed integral with said body at the opposite sides of said openings, means for connecting the separate sides of said openings, said flaps being adapted to be rolled together to provide a water-tight closure for said openings, and means for holding said flaps in theirrolled position. A sleeping bag composed of a body pro vided with a longitudinal side opening, flaps formed integral with said body at the opposlte sides of said opening, said flaps being folded outwardly and backwardly upon site sides of said opening, a plurality of spaced eyelets formed in said pocket, aaplurality of correspondingly spaced eyelets formed in said hem, a rope securedin said pocket and provided at intervals with looops whlch are adapted to pass through the eye.- lets 1n said pocket and the eyelets in said hem to connect the separate sides of the opening, said flaps being adapted to be rolled together to form a water-tight closure for said opening, and straps secured to the bodyat the opposite sides of said opening and adapted to be tied together to hold said flaps in their rolled position.

A sleeping bag composed of a body provided with a longitudinal side opening and a transverse end opening, flaps formed integrally with said body at the opposite sides of said openings, said flaps being stitched to the body a predetermined distance from 1n one side portion of said openings and hens in the other side portions of said openings, a plurality of spaced eyelets formed in said pockets, a plurality of correspondingly spaced eyelets formed in said hems, ropes or cords secured in said pockets and provided at intervals with loops Which are adaptedto pass through the eyelets in said pockets and the eyelets insaid .hems to connect the separate sides of the openings, said flaps being. adapted to be rolled together to form a Water-tight closure for said openings and straps securedto the body at the opposite sides of said openings and adapted to be tied together to hold said flaps in their rolled position.

5. A sleeping bag composed of a body portion provided with a longitudinal side opening and a-transverse end opening, means for closing said side and end openings, and the opposite sides of said openings being provided with means involving flaps adapted to be rolled together to form a Water-tight closure for said openings.
