IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE MUSIC-STANDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,978, dated June 18, 1872.

and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an- Improvement in Portable and Adjustable Supports for Music-Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingformingpart of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of all its parts in place, set up. Fig. 2 shows the case with all the other parts inclosed within it. Fig. 3 shows the book or music-holder partially folded; Fig. 4, a side view, to show the inclination of the holder.

Similar letters of reference in the accompanyin g drawing indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to supply a want greatly felt by amateur musicians; and consists of a music-stand for supporting the music when playing, which is so constructed that the music-holder and legs, as shown by Fig. 1, can be folded and packed within itself so as to assume the form shown by Fig. 2, thus occupying a small space, easily set up and incased, and readily conveyed from place to place without being encumbered with" the ordinary stands in use.

Figure 1 shows a cylindrical case, 0, closed below by a fixed and rounded plug or bottom, B, being perforated at three points for the reception of the legs A, which form a tripod.

This case is notched out on one side above to allow the covering-flange c, with its base or entering plug a and binding-screw E, to fit down upon the upper edge. The flanged plug 6 is centrallyperforated for the reception of the headed sliding rod D d, and held at any desired point by the binding-screw E in the ordinary Way. The head d of the rod D has a dovetailed groove for the reception of the central piece F, which is cut with a tapered bevel to fit. This central piece F is hinged by a pivot to a cross=piece, H, on a projecting ledge, I, which supports the music. This ledge I is slotted at two points, a a, near the center,for

the reception of the slightly wedge-shaped ends a: as of the slats 2 and 3. These slats are connected by pivots to the slats 1 and 4, the lower ends of which are also connected by pivots with the ends of the cross-piece H and incline to the center, having their ends notched or perforated sons to embrace or receive a pin or pins, P, affixed on the upper part of the central piece in such a manner that when the bevel-edged turn-button G is turned down it firmly clamps and holds them, as shown by Fig. 1. These slats and cross-pieces are inclined, as shown by Fig. 4, and form the support for the music when opened out. The pivots and slats are so arranged as to allow of being folded down upon each other, shown partially closed by Fig. 3. The flanged top 0,

with its sliding rod and binding-screw, lifts ofl' or out of the top, when the folded holder F H I, &c., with the legs A, are inserted into the case 0, leaving a central open space for the rod 1) which is thrust down to the bottom and reduces the whole, as shown by Fig. 2.

These cases may be of tin plate or other material-say twenty inches long by two and a half inches wide. The lower plug or rounded bottom B may be cast, as also the legs A, or made of wood, as lightness or strength may dictate.

I am aware that tripod music-stands with a sliding rod and binding-screw for adjustment are in use, but their legs are fixed and the holder and rod united. Such I do not claim.

What I claim as my invention is-= 1. The folding music-holder F H I and cross slats 1, 2, 3, and 4, all combined and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and specified.

2. In a music-stand, I also claim the hollow case 0 with its rounded bottom B perforated for the legs A, in combination with the perforated loose top or flanged plug 6 for the headed sliding rod D d, substantially arranged as and for the purpose mentioned.
