Specification of Letters Patent.

AppIication filed September 28, 1917. Serial No. 193,733.
Ta .all whom t may concern:
'Be it known that I, RAY-H. Frrz GERALD, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of Pittsburgh, inv the Vcounty of Alleghenyand State of Pennsylvania, have inventedL certain new and usefulV Improvements in- Display-Cartons g and., I do khereby declare lthe following tobea full, clear, and exact description of they invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and yuse the same.
This invention relates toimprovements in display cartons and more particularly to such as are made of paper or cardboard, one object of the invention being to construct a carton in such manner that the articles or packages contained therein shall be automatically fed, one at a time, to a discharge outlet through which the same may be easily ejected without interference with or hindrance by thekremaining articles or packages within the carton.
1With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of' display carton embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the blanks.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, the carton 1 is made rectangular in form comprising front and back members 2, 3, and side members 4, 5, integral therewith. The side members 4 5 are provided at their upper ends with aps 6 6 which are bent inwardly and the front and back members 2 3 are provided with iaps 7 7 which fold over the flaps 6 and over each other, thus forming the closed top of the carton, and these several flaps muy be fastened together by gluing or they may be provided with interlocking tongues and notches in the well known manner and which is not necessary to herein show and describe. L
The bottom of the carton is closed by means of aps 8 8 at the lower edges of the sides 4-5 and {iaps 9 9 at the lower edges of the front and back 2 3,-said flaps being secured together in the same manner as above described.
Located within the bottom o portion of the carton'is a false bottoni 10. This may be conveniently made of card-board and 'is provided vat one edge .with a depending flange 11 which extendsA to the bottom of the carton and maintains the false bottom in a position inclining toward lthe front of the carton at the bottomthereof. A flange 12is provided at the lower edge of the false bottom and extends upwardly therefrom parallel with the inner face of thefront 2 of the carton, the upper end of said fiange being provided with an inwardly Vprojecting lip 13.
ongues 14 are cut from the material of the sides 4 5 of the carton near the bottom of the latter and are bent inwardly so as to be disposed under the inclined false bottom 10. Communicating with the slots formed by cutting out the tongues 14 from the sides 4 5, are openings 15,-said openings being located in the sides 4 5 near the front 2 of the carton. A tongue or shelf 16 is cut from the material of the front 2 of the carton and projects inwardly over the flange or lip 18,-said shelf being disposed just above the openings 15 in the sides 4 -5 and serving to support the front row of articles in the carton and prevent the same from interfering with the positioning of other articles therein in line with the openings 15 as long as the carton contains articles other than those supported by said shelf.
If desired those portions of the flanges of the false bottom which lie parallel with walls of the carton may be glued thereto and said false bottom may also be glued to the tongues 14.
It will be apparent that with my improvements the articles or packages constituting the contents of the carton will be fed by gravity and the false bottom to position, one at a time, in line with the openings 15. Either of these openings may constitute a discharge outlet through which an article may be ejected by pressure of the finger inserted through the other of said openings, 15.
Having fully described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A display carton provided at its lower end with a false bottom inclined from the rear to the front wall of the carton, and having each side of the carton at a point slightly above the lower portion and respective ends of the false'bottom provided with alined openings, each of suicient size to permit the insertionfof-:alirrger ofacustoiner and either of said openings constituting a discharge outlet.
2. A display `carton provided inits side walls near the bottoin'thereof and adjacent to the front of the carton with` alined operb ings, a false hottoin in said Carton inc-lining downwardly toward Lthe ,bottoms of vsaid flllldpenings, iand ashe'lf ,projecting yinvviardlyl lfrgni the front ,of the carton and above' Lsai' aline@ 0peni-lees-l "A .fdisplay carton provided in fitsrside Walls near ,the ,bottom thereof and in proxiniity to the front of the cart-,on Vwith alined openings, a shelf crit ronimaterial of the vfron of `,the carton Iand projecting inwardly above alinedeopenniga ,and a false wloottoln incliningdoxvnvvardly ,toward the bottoinsjof Asaid alined `openings and termin-ating ,at its loix/,e1` vredge luider said shelf.
"4. lA display carton having alined openings in its sidewalls near the bottoms there- `alsebotto1n having a supporting flange depending lfrom its back edge, and `the-fside Walls of the carton having tongues project- -ing inwardly under fsaid false bottom.
5. A display carton having alined .openings in its side Wallsln'eartliebottin'thereof, fan :inclined -alse fbtt'Om ceniifiatin'g` at itslowerl Vedgefbelo'wsaid openings and provided at said lower edge `with an upwardly projecting lia-nge -'having a lip projecting inwardly from its uppe'r edge, and a 'shelf projecting inwardly from the front Wall of the carton and Edispo's'ed overs'aid lip. j
In Ytestimony whereof, I 'lrave signed this specification lin the presence of tivo subscribin'g Witnesses.
