Description

ANDREW MURTAUGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PULLEY ARRANGEMENT FOR DUMB-WAITERS.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 12,640, dated April 3, 1855.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, ANDREW MURTAUGH,
Vof the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a new and useful Improve ment in the Manner of Arrangin and Operating Dumb-Waiters; and I do iereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exaotdescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying `drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a dumb Waiter arranged after my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same arranged after the old plan.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corro` sponding parts in both figures.
My improvement relates to that description of dumb waiter which is suspended by cords and weights and moved up and down suddenly by the hand of an attendant; and is designed to place the operation of hoisting and lowering the waiter under the perfeet control of the attendant, and also render said operation very easy and convenient, and likewise prevent the mischief commonly experienced from sudden jarring, occasioned by too great force being suddenly applied to the waiter,'by the hand, in its up and down movements.
The nature of my invention consists in suspending the waiter A, and the weight B, between two or more cords C, D, arranged in the manner shown in Fig. l, to wit, the cord O, being attached fast to an arbor I), and carried up to and around a pulley or pulleys c, c, on the bottom of the waiter and then down to a large pulley (Z, and wound once around the same and then carried along horizont-ally until it arrives at the pulley e, under which it is passed and carried up to and around a pulley e', on the bottom of the weight and then down again and secured fast to the bottom of the case A, and the cord D, being attached fast to the top of the bo.\: A, and carried down under a pulley or pulleys f, f, and up again and around a pulley or pulleys g, and down again to and around a pulley g, on the top of the weight and up again and secured to the top of the ease A. I
The suspending of the waiter and weight between two cords arranged as shown in the drawing enables me to dispense with the use of a crane in raising the waiter. And the arranging of the cords double over pulleys has the advantage of giving a iXed end by which, as said end is secured to an arbor, they can conveniently be drawn taut, for by simply turning the arbor with a key the cord D will be wound upon it and the object just mentioned effected. In order to prevent the cords again becoming slack I provide a ratchet z', and pawl j as shown, the ratchet being fast on the arbor.
To avoid friction and guide the waiter I provide a series of groo-ved friction rollers a, a, a, a, and circular ways a, a', and to avoid the necessity of the attendant remaining by the waiter and holding it while the articles are being removed or put on to it, I provide a ratchet 7L, and pawl 7L', so that the waiter may be prevented, if desirable, from descending when the power' is taken otf from the crank.
lVliat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I claim the manner herein shown of arranging and suspending the waiter A and. weight B, between two cords O, D, arranged double over pulleys, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ANDREV MURTAUGH. ftnesses J. G. MASON, I. IV. OooMs.
