Description

Toallfwhom ttmayconcem: i l `Be it known that I,"`F.` H. MOORE, ofrBoston,`in the countyv of"Suifolk and State of `lVlassachusetts,` have invented!` certain new and useful Improvements in the Covers of `Coal-I-Ioles, `of which thefollowing is a full, clear," and eXact description, reference being hadto the annexed drawings, making part `of this specication, in which-s- Figure 1 is a view of the cover with my improvements attached, Fig. 2, asection throughthe sidewalk showing the cover closed and fastenedgFig. 3," asimilar section `with the cover opened.` f f `The coal hole covers, as heretofore constructed consists of a `simple plate of iron, fitting into an annular plate laid perma- 1 nently in the side Walk immediatelyoverthe opened for the introduction of coal or for other purposesfthe plate `is removed, and `when it becomes necessary to ventilate the vault beneath, the plate is partially re-l `moved to `one side. In either oase accidents to passers by areeXceedingly liableto occur. `Toremedy this inconvenience and to produce `a cover which *may at any time be raised for the purpose of `Ventilating, or fory thev introduction of coal or other articles `Without danger to the `"passers-by is` the ob-.v ect ofmy present invention," which consists ljinjattaching two `or more rods to `the underermitted "to slide freely in suitable open- "ings in the cylinder or top plate ofthe coal hole in.` a mannertwhich will now be more fully described.
`A is the cover; bl, the rods which are secured thereto, and which slide freely in the hrools` Z) are f pierced with several" holes,
\ through which, and also` through holes in the tubes B pass the' keys a, by which means chimney `of the vault. When the hole is neath surface of the cover, which rods are i "tubes B attached to the cylinder C. The

may be secured at various heights above the pavement as require-d.
In certain cases the holes in the rods and the keys a, may be dispensed with, the cover not being allowed to rise sulliciently to permit the entrance of a man, its motion being arrested by the buttons S at the bottom of the rods.
` In Figs. l-and 3 itis seen raised to its full height for the purpose of introducing coal, and in Fig. 2 it is represented as closed and bolted by the pins a. The cover may also be raised a few inches for the purpose of ventilation.`
In the accompanying drawings the cover is represented as supported by three rods. I do not connemyself however to any particular number of rods as any other suitable number may be employed. In certain cases I propose using but one rod in the center of t-he plate, `the lower end of the rod bein screwed and passing through a horizonta bar which is secured across the bottom of the opening. And When'the pavement is of flat stone or Vflagging the cylinder or annular plate above described may be dispensed with, the cover being let directly into the sto-ne, suitable staples being secured to the under surface ofi the latter to receive the bolts or keys which fasten the cover when closed or elevated.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I The method of securing the coal hole cover by means of the rods b or their equivalentswhereby the cover may be raised more or less as required for purposes of ventilation` or for the introduction of coal, and all danger to passers by is avoided as set forth.
