Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARVID BURSELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aumsville, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in surgical instruments, and the invention has for its object to provide an instrument of the character specified, especially adapted for forming needles into curved or angular shape or for straightening the curving needles, and for holding the needles securely during the use of the same.

Figs. 3 and 4: are plan views of different embodiments of the needle;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a needle provided with means for preventing deep penetration; and
Fig. 6 is an end view of the same.
The improved instrument comprises a pair of members 1 and 2, each of which has a handle portion and a jaw portion. Each of the members 1 and 2 is provided with a handle portion 3 and 4L and with a jawportion 5 and 6, respectively. The members are pivotally connected, as indicated at 7, in such manner that when the handles move toward each other the jaws 5 and 6 will move toward each other. The jaw 5 is provided on its inner face with a V-shaped notch or groove 8 extending longitudinally of the jaw, the full length of the jaw, the groove gradually decreasing in depth toward the pivotal connection. The jaw 6 is cut away at its opposite side edges, on its inner face, as indicated at 9, to fit within the V-shaped groove of the jaw 8, and both jaws are provided with registering transverse grooves 10 for receiving the needles to be described.
The improved needle shown in Fig. 3 comprises a body portion or shank 11, and points 12 at each end of the shank, annular shoulders 13 being formed between the points and the shank. The needle 14, shown in Fig. 4, is pointed at each end, and differs from that shown in Fig. 3 in having no shoulders 13.
The needle shown in Fig. 5 is of the same type as that shown in Fig. 3, comprising the body or shank 11, points 12 and shoulders 13. Washers 15 are slipped over the points until they abut the shoulders, the said washers being of silver or other non-corrosive metal, as are also the needles. It will be evident that the needles shown in Fig. 5 cannot penetrate beyond the washers 15.
In use, the improved needles are grasped between the jaws, the needles being in the grooves 10, and it will be evident that a very firm grip may be retained on the needle, and the device is especially adapted, together with the needles, for use in restricted places.
It will be understood that the device is also intended for shaping the needles into curved form or into angular form, that is, to form and apply the needles. The instrument is also used for removing the needles, when desired, by straightening the curve in the needle.
I claim:
1. A surgical instrument consisting of forceps, the inner face of the jaw of one member of the forceps having a V-shaped groove extending longitudinally thereof and gradually decreasing in depth toward its inner end, the other jaw being cut away at each side edge to fit the groove, said jaws having registering transverse grooves for gripping needles.
