To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I. TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Construction for Beams, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to construction of warp beams and the like. One of the objects thereof is to provide practical beam construction of reliable and eflicient action. Another object is to provide apparatus of the above type of simple light construction in which the metal is so distributed as to be economically used and possess especial strength and rigidity at the points at which they are required. Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the structure hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now to Fig. 2, of this drawing, there is shown a barrel or cylinder 1 of a Warp beam,.and it may here be noted that the term cylinder is used throughout in a broad sense to denote any equivalent part in warp beam construction. Passing through this cylinder from end to end is a shaft 2, and it is to be understood that the end and head construction of this beam is identical at both ends, the shaft 2 passing entirely through all parts.
The cylinder 1 is preferably of built up construction as hereinafter described, but while light and inexpensive, is rigid and substantially unitary in effect. The en of the cylinder comprises a casting 3 so disposed that its end rests preferably in the same plane as the end or bearing surface .4: of the outer portion of the cylinder; this casting forming an inner end bearing surface 5. Against this surface 5 there is clamped a cast hub 6, the latter being adjusted and held in position as by the lock nuts 7 on the shaft 2.
The cast hub 6 is provided with an outwardly extending flange 8 and to this flange is secured a sheet metal head member 9, through the center of which is fitted that portion of the hub engaging the surface 5.
.This head member 9 has stamped therein radial ribs 10, and its entire central portion is stamped outwardly to the plane of the outer portion of the ribs. This forms an annular depression in the head member which rests evenly against the flange 8 and is secured thereto by a series of rivets 11.
The body of the head member 9 bears evenly against the end surface 4 of the cylinder 1, and the flange 8 is extended outwardly past this surface so that it grips the head member and supports it in bearing position. This flange engages the radial ribs 10 on their rear or outer surface, and accordingly may exert any desired degree of gripping or supporting pressure on the sheet metal head.
Head 9 extending beyond the cylinder 1 as shown in the drawing, is outwardly flanged at its outer edge and bent to form a belt race 12. In this manner, the head and the entire beam may be rotated and yet there is a frictional connection betvveen'the head and barrel or cylinder of the beam, whereby relative rotary movement is permitted if necessary.
Although this invention is not limited to the precise construction of the cylinder itself, in the embodiment here set forth, this member comprises an outer wooden shell 13 each end of which is closed by a heavy,
wooden disk or abutment 14 rigidly held in place as by the spikes 15. The end casting 3 is secured to the shaft 2 by means of a set screw 16 and is outwardly flanged as at 17 and suitably secured to the abutment 14 as by the screws 18.
As the cast portion of the head bears di rectly against the central portion 3 of the cylinder, any desired pressure may be exerted upon these parts, and the outer or sheet metal member is so supported that it may be formed of extremely thin material and yet be sufficiently stiff to prevent bending or flaring outwardly even when exposed to rough usage.
It will thus be seen that there is provided apparatus in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and in which Various advantages are attained.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim as my invention:
1. In construction of the class described,
in combination, a cylinder, an annular sheet metal head member resting against the outer portions of the end of said cylinder, and a central cast head member resting against the central portion of the end of said cylinder and extending outwardly to support the outer surface of said sheet metal member opposite its engagement with said cylinder, and a shaft extending through said cylinder and said head member to form a trunnion.
2. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, an annular sheet metal head member resting against the outer portions of the end of said cylinder, a central cast head member resting against the central portion of the end of said cylinder and extending outwardly to support the outer surface of said sheet metal member opposite its engagement with said cylinder, a shaft extending through said cylinder and said heet metal member, and means upon said shaft adapted to force said cast member against the end of said cylinder and grip said sheet metal member between itself and the opposite end surface of said cylinder.

In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, an annular sheet metal head member resting against the outer portions of the end of said cylinder, and a central cast head member resting against the central portion of the end of said cylinder and extending outwardly to su port the outer surface of said sheet meta said cylinder being hollow with closed ends and having in its end an annular recess between said outer portion and said central portion against wh1ch said sheet metal head member and said central cast head member rest respectively.
4. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder comprising an end casting, a cast member engaging the end of said cylinder at Said casting and pro v member opposlte its engagement with said cylinder,
.member of annular form, the inner edge portions of said head member being stamped to form an annular depression, said head member contacting .with said cylinder at portions thereof exterior to said annular depression and being shaped to provlderadial extensions of said depression in sa1d exterior portions, and means for mounting said head upon said cylinder to permit of relative rotary movement therebetween.
6. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder having a substantially flat end surface, a sheet metal head member having a central opening, the inner edge portions of said head member being stamped to form an annular depression, sai head member contacting with said cylinder at portions thereof exterlor to said annular depression and being shaped to provide radial'extensions of said depression in sa1d exterior portions, a central cast member hav ng a portlon fitting within the central opening of said sheet metal member and having a circular flange against which a1d annular depression rests, and means adapted to force inwardly said outer member to grip sa1d sheet metal member between itself and the end of said cylinder and to permit relative I sheet metal member, a circular flange against I which said annular depression rests and to which it is ecured, a cylinder, the central portion of the end surface of which rests against said cast member and the outer ortions of the end surface of which rest agamst said sheet metal member, a shaft extending through aid cast member and said cylinder,
and means upon said shaft adapted to force said cast member against the end of said cylinder.
8.
