The name is sate wait ng {s i e "51 i ranged to freely slidelongitudinally therein but substantially rigidfwith; respect to other movements relativeto the frame; this result being preferably secured by y dovetailed engagement between the slide and frame as more clearly shown in Fig.3, The lower. end of said slide 5 terminates in a forked portion which, at its deepest or, upper part is interiorly concaved'to close'iy, fit astride the stair-rod, there beingja'front j aw 5, engaging the outer and upper quadrant 'of the circumference offthe rod and the :rear, jaw; 5"" engaging fthejinner and upper. quadrant of said circumference. YThe curvature ofjthe said rear jawlfi? is arranged to *ali'ne and register with that of the con;- caved lower ends of the frameIjaws, 3, 3. The points of slight-ly elongated as shown, but are always sufficiently separated to provide for the free passage of the rod between the same. The capacity for the longitudinal movement of the slide in respect to the frame should be such as to permit the slide 5 to be raised sufficiently to allow the rod 4: freely to pass under the point of the outer slide jaw 5 as is shown in Fig. i, and. into the position wherein it becomes seated in place resting against the contoured portion of the frame- jaws 3, 3, the slide thereafter being forced downwardly until it is astride the rod and rests firmly thereon.
said slide jaws 5 and 5 are 1 If desired the provision of the rear jaw 5 of the slide may be dispensed with, although I prefer to use the same.
The operative result of the foregoing construction is such that in the lowered position of the slide 5, the said rod 4:, on its side adjacent the stair-riser, is engagedby the jaws 3, 3, of the frame; and it is also engaged on both sides by the jaws 5" and 5 of the slide. In this position the outside jaw 5 of the slide operates not only to resist any force tending to pull the rod away from the stair-riser, but also prevents the displacement of the rod outwardly and away from the riser which must take place before there can beany upward movement of said rod past the shoulder formed by the top of the concaved seat of the jaws 8, 3, of the frame in response to any force pulling upwardly upon said rod. The fastener therefore in the lowered position of the slide is efi'ective to secure said rod in its desired position.
VVhileI prefer to construct my rod securer with cooperating sets of jaws which are contoured in close conformity with the circumference of the rod which is intended to be used in connection therewith, which jaws cooperate to secure the rod in the manner hereinbefore set forth, material departures from such contour may be permitted without especially. impairing the efliciency of my device as a rod-securing means, so
long as one of said sets of jaws provides a shoulder which limits the movement of the rod therepast when said rod is restrained from displacement from the plane of such movement sufficient to enable it to clear said shoulder, and the other cooperating set provides means operating to prevent the said displacement.
Ordinarily the arrangement hereinbefore described operates to secure the rod firmly in the desired position without additional look ing means. However, to insure against any accidental displacement of the slide and re lease of the rod, a set-screw 6 may be provided in the slide which is adapted to engage the frame at the rear of said slide, in which case the said rear portion of the slide also homes at this patent may be obtained for five naesess may be serrated or otherwise roughened as is shown at 8 in Fig. l, or the frame may be drilledto permit a rod or pin 7 to be passed transversely therethrough so as to lie above said slide when it lies in its rod engaging position.
In employing a rod securer having the features of construction which I have hereinabove described, the frame of the securer is attached in position on the riser 'or tread efore the carpet is laid, and the rods also, before such time, may be secured, preferably by tapes, 9 to the carpet at the desired location, leaving only a small portion of the rod end. disengaged therefrom. When the carpet is laid, the slides of the rod-securer are lifted, the end of the rod secured to the carpet is slipped under the said slide into position against the frame jaws in which position it is secured by depressing the slide. All the necessary manipulations involved in these operations may be readily performed by the fingers operating between the edge of the carpet and the stairs; permitting the rod securer to be so located as to be entirely concealed from view. In similar manner, if desired to remove the carpet, this necessary operation can be also readily performed.
I claim as my invention In a rod holder for carpet rods, a frame comprising a base having lateral raised portions which are provided, at one end of the same, with vrod-seats so situated thereon as to position a rod lying therein in close proximity to the plane of the bottom surface of said frame, and a slide-jaw lying between the said raised portions and slidably mounted therebetween; said slide having a rodseat at the end thereof arranged, in the rod securing position of the slide, to cooperate with the rod-seats of said frame in fixedly securing said rod therewithin.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
