LILLIAN BLAYNEY, OF OAKDALE, IOWA.
READING-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29,1918.
Application filed February 27, 1914. Serial No. 821,523.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, LILLIAN BLAYNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakdale, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reading-Tables, of
' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tables and the primary object of the invention is to provide a reading table for use in public libraries and the like, wherein a table like body has arranged upon opposite sides thereof rows of bookrests and chairs which are so connected with the table and arranged with relation to each other, that the chairs and bookrests may not only be moved toward and away from each other but may be pushed beneath the table in an out of the way position when not in use.
combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reading table provided with seats and book rests in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on a plane intersecting the supporting arm of one of the seats and also intersecting one of the 'book rests and showing the book rest and seat arranged in positlon for use.
Fi 3 is av similar view of the same showing t e book rest and seat arranged out of the way and with the book rest under the table top and the seat arranged close thereto.
Figs. 4 and 5-are views in side elevation of one of the book rests.
In accordance with my invention 1' provide a table 1 which is here shown as of oblong rectangular form and as provided at its corners with pairs of supporting legs 2. Within the scope of my invention, the table and the supporting legs may be of any suitable form and construction. The supporting legs are connected together in pairs by cross bars 3 which are arranged near their lower ends-and the said cross bars 3 form the supports fora longitudinally arranged seat supporting bar and table brace 4. This supporting bar is provided at suitable regular intervals with openings 5. I also provide chairs or seats 6, which are arranged in rows The invention consists in the construction,
upon opposite sides of the table, with. each chair or seat comprising a bottom 7 and a back 8. Each seat is provided with a supporting bracket arm 9 which has a vertical portion 10, a horizontally outwardly extending portion 11 which is secured to the under side of the bottom 7 at the center thereof, and each supporting bracket arm also has an inwardly extending horizontally arranged portion 12 to bear on the supporting bar 4 and provided with a longitudinal slot 13. In connection with each seat and chair there is a securing clamping bolt 14, the said bolts passing through the openings 5 and also through and operating in the slots 13. Hence the seats are connected to the supporting bar of the table and are adapted to be moved laterally toward and from the table to suit the convenience of the users. The mounting of the chair also provides for a pivotal movement, so that the same may be swung at an angle to either side of the pivot if desired and the occupant may then sit at an angular position with respect to the table to provide for various changes of position. When not in use the seats may be moved inwardly and arranged with their backs closeto the sides of the table and out of the way, a will be understood.
The table is also provided with book rests 15 which form drawers or slides and operate in openings in the sides of the table and are supported on suitable guides 16 with which a the table frame is provided. The book rests are arranged in rows upon opposite sides of the table and opposite the chairs with the book rests in the row upon one side of the table out of alinement with the book rests in the row upon the other side of the table thereby preventing a person seated upon one side of the table casting a shadow upon a front side with a book supporting strip 22.
The back 23 of the book rest has its upper side pivotally connected to the upper side of the front 20 by means of hinges 24, the lower side of the back 23 hearing and being adjustable on the slides 17. The front and back of the book rest may be arranged at any desired angle or may be folded fiat on the slide 17 and when at the desired adjusted position may be secured in such position by means of a connecting chain 25 which is attached to the front 20 and any link of which may be engaged with a headed stud 26 with which the back 25 is provided. One of these book rests is provided for each seat.
When the book rest is arranged in flattened position on the slides the latter may be pushed in out of the way. When a chair or seat has been drawn out the corresponding book rest may be also drawn out from one side of the table and the front and back of the book rest is then set up and secured in the desired adjusted position. These book rests are for individual use by occupants of the chairs and greatly promote the comfort; and convenience of the readers.
a eaa eee Having thus described my inyerntion if row upon the opposite sides of said body,
and chairs connected with said body heneath said book rests and arranged in rows upon opposite sides of said body to extend beyond said book rests and in line therewith, said book rests and. chairs being movable toward. and away from each other.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
LILLIAN BLAYNEY.
