Description
JAMES DUFFY.` Fire Extingushe-r. N0. 125,275, Patented Aprll2,872..
UNITED STATES JAMES DUFFY, or Quincy, mnt-sors.'
IMPROVEMENT IN FlR-XTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,275, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DUFFY, of Quim cy, in the county of Adams and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and nse ful Improvements in Apparatus for Extinguishing Fires; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an apparatus for extinguishing lires in houses of any description, public buildings, churches, Src.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a -side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my apparatus.
A represents a pump, by means of which water is pumped out of a cistern into a reservoir, B, which is supported by any suitable means above the roof of the building to which the apparatus is attached. In the bottom of the reservoirB is an opening, closed by avalve, C, from which opening a pipe, D, leads downward and runs along the top of a house, E. From this pipe other pipes, G G, run under the eaves ofthe house; and also still other pipes, H H, inside of the house, at the top and sides. All of these pipes are perforated along the sides nearest the walls or roof of the house, so that when the valve C is raised by any suitable means the water will pass through said pipes and be sprinkled all over the house in case of lire.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the pump A, reservoir B, withvalve C and perforated pipesD G H, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, 1870. y
JAMES DUFFY.
