My invention relates to :mop making :machines, and more particularly toa machine for-making-whatiis;commonly known as ferrule mopsythe principal object ofthe invention being to provide means for easily and quickly tyingthe yarn to I a handle plug, and applying a ferrule to :thegplug, so that the ferrule may be attachedto a handle-toicomplete the ;1nop.

The barrel 33 is provided at one side and near its lower end with a slot 48 through which the nail, by which the ferrule is secured to the handle plug, may be driven.

The handle plug heretofore mentioned comprises a wooden plug 50 of such diameter that it will fit snugly within the metal ferrule 51, and the ferrule 51 is of such size that it will fit closely and snugly over the mop handle 52; the ferrule being provided -with apertures 53 at one end through which nails may be driven to attach the ferrule to the plugs, and with an aperture 54 at the upper end through which a nail may be .driven to attach the ferrule to the mop handle.

The yarn or mop head 55 is held to the ferrule and handle plug by a bail, preferably of spring Wire, and U-shaped to form a neck for holding the yarn, and legs for lying along the handle plug within the ferrule; the ends of the legs being inturned to form keepers 57 that lie over the inner end of the plug within the ferrule to anchor the head to the handle plug.

Presuming the parts to be constructed as described, when a mop is to be assembled,

the yarn 55 is placed in the neck of a bail 56 and a handle plug 50 placed in the upper .end of the bail. The bail with the yarn and plug located therein is then placed in the aws 78 and the legs of the bail pinched by. the jaws to press the same into the sides of the plug and locate the keepers over the end of the latter. A ferrule is then positioned in the barrel 33, the latch 42 slipped to free the lever 27, and the lever moved downwardly .to push the ferrule over the handle "plug and clamp the bail legs to the plug. j

' hen the lever has been lowered to the desired position, it is latched by the toothed bar and the parts held together While the operator drives nails throu h the ferrule and into the handle plug to fix the same together. 7

When the'ferrule has been nailed in place, the lever 27 is released, the jaws 7 8 opened, and the ferrule with the contained parts removed from the barrel 33. The handle 52 is then projected into the open end of the ferrule and the parts nailed together as heretofore suggested. The barrel 33 may be of sufficient diameter to take, .the largest size of a ferrule, and when'a'smaller ferrule is to be used a reducing sleeve 58 is placed in the barrel, the sleeve having a slot 59 that may register with the shell slot 48 in order that the nailing may be accomplished through both members. .Havi'n'g thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is l 1.
