To all whom it may concern: l
Be itlmown that I, LESLIE E. VAss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing Vat Henderson in the county of Henderson and State of kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Hair- Clippers, of .which the following is a speci-v fication. This invention relates to barbers appliances and has particular application to improvements in hair clippers.
The chief. characteristic of this invention resides in the provision of aY device of this character in which the hair clipper is adapted to cut the hair when moving the clipper in two directionslwhereby the usual reverting of the clipper to the starting position will be eliminated thus producing an article which will cut thev hair with a minimum expenditure of labor. In the hair clippers with which I am familial', there is one cutting edge which'only permits the cutting o f the hair when moving the clipper in one direction, thus necessitating the disengaging of the clipper from the hair to revert the same to starting position. 4In carrying out my invention I propose to eliminate this unnecessary movement of the clipper when reverting to starting position b vproviding two edges of the'clippers with a cutting blade whereby thelclipper' may bereciprocated over the hair and theV cutting operation continued with the forward or rearward movement of the clipper.
Another characteristic of thisinvention is to provide a hair clipper having a comb associated with either ofl the stationary blades, the comb being adjustably mounted upon the clippers and adapted tov engage the depth or length of the clipper upon the head.
Another characteristic of this invention is to provide a hair clipper in which the handles forA operating the clipper are reversedly mounted thereupon whereby either cutting edge of the clipper may be presented to clip the'hairwhen moving the clipper forwardly. Another characteristic of this invention resides in the provision 'of the device of this character which is simple, eflicient and durable in its construction and which may be manufactured at a nominalcost. -V Other characteristics of the invention will.

Referring to the drawings in detail, my invention comprises a rectangular plate l which has the vopposite longitudinal edges thereof provided with pointed teethQ which constitute the stationary blades 3. Formed upon. the upper side of the plate l and eX- tending upwardlyV therefrom is a circular standard 4, the standard beingprovidedcentrally thereof with la longitudinally extending bore 5. `Disposed at diametrically opposite points upon the standard 4v adjacent its connection vwith the plate are the rectangular openings 6 throughY which the mechanism for moving the blades is-adapted to eX- tend, as will be hereinafter described; The upper side of the plate l is formed vwith longitudinally extendingspaced ridges 7 which are disposed upon oppositey ysides of the standard 4 Vand arranged at the longitudinal medial portion of the plate, while disposed upon the opposite side of the ridges and adjacent the opposite endsy of the plate 1 are the upstanding pins 8. Mounted upon the plate l and upon opposite sides'of the standard 4`are the movable blades 9 which have theirouter edges provided with the teeth V10,-
the teeth being of a vsimilar construction as those of the blade3. The movable blades 9 are provided with rectangular'openings 11 disposed adjacent their opposite ends which are 'adapted to Vreceive Vthe respective vpins 8, the pins limitingthe longitudinal movement of the blades in either direction. The'movable blades 9 arel further provided at their inner edgeswiththe arcuatel recesses l2 to a circular opening 111 which is adapted to receive the standard while the opposite ends of the -plate are provided with the ears 15 which are secured to the opposite ends of the plate 1 by means of the screws 16. y
The upper endsof the standard ll are formed with a squared socket 17 in which is mounted a squared projection 18 formed on the underside of the annular head 19 of the stationary handle 20. Extending through the bore 5 of the standard 4l and having its lower end journaled within the plate 1 is a shaft 21 the shaft being of such a length as to project beyond the upper end of the standard and terminating in a squared head 22. rlhe upper head of the shaft 22 is adapted to extend through the annular headv 19 of the handle 20, the squared head confining the handle upon the shaft as will be understood. rlfhe shaft 21 is formed adjacent its lower end with diamtrically opposed pins 23 which are adapted to extend through the openings 6 formed in the standards and have their outer ends disposed within the notches 12. It will be seen from this construction that when the shaft is oscillated the blades 9 will be reciprocated in opposite directions.
Mounted upon the squared head 22 of the shaft 21 is the head 2d of the movable or operating handle 25, the head 2d being provided with a squared opening which receives the head 22 whereby upon movement of the handle 25, movement will be imparted to the shaft 21. rlhe confronting faces of the heads 19 and 2d are provided withannular grooves 26 which cooperate to form a socket to receive the coiled spring 27, the opposite ends of the spring being secured to the heads 19 and 211 to cause the spring to exert its tension and normally retain the handle 2d in spaced relation to the handle 20.
Toretain the handle upon the shaft 21, l provide the standard 4l with an upright 28 which is detachably secured to the standard by means of the screw 29. The outer end of the upright 28 extends beyond the upper end of the screw and is provided with an annularly disposed head 30 which overlies the head 24 formed on the handle 25 and has its lower or inner face cupped to receive the said head and at the same time to permit the free movement of the head when actuating the handle 25. The head 30 and the upright 28 being detachably secured to the standard permits the ready removal of the handle when moving the handle to reversed position as will be hereinafter described.
To gage the length of and to erect and present the proper position of the hair to be cut, the underside of the plate 1 is provided with a substantially lll-shaped frame 31, the opposite ends of which are pivotal-ly mounted upon the screws 16, the medial portion of the framev being provided@ with suitable securing means for holding a comb 32 ofv any nea-ases suitable construction, the securing means permitting the `detaching of the comb to facilitate the cleaning or interchanging thereof. rlhe frame 31 being hingedly mounted for swinging movement permits the comb to be moved to opposite positions with relation. to either of the blades 3, the comb assuming different positions with relation to the blades fr the cutting of long or short hair as is clearly shown in the drawings.
ln operation, the handles 2O and 25 are gripped in the usual manner, the fingers engaging the hook 33 whereby upon compress ing thc hand, the movable handle 25 will be moved toward the stationary handle against .the tension of the coil spring 27. Upon-moving the handle 25, the shaft 21 will bel partially rotatedthereby causing the pin 23 to en the notches 12 thus causing the movable blades 9 to move longitudinally of the plate 1 and in reverse directions. lt will be evident that upon relievingr the handle 25 of compression, the spring will exert its tension to move the handle into open or normal position thereby causing the shaft to partially rotate in. an opposite direction thus causing the movable blades to again reciprocate in a reverse direction, the pins `8 limiting the movement of the blades` as'has been described. ln providing the plate 1 withthe ridges 7, l insure the top movement of the blades and prevent the accidental clogging of the same. moved longitudinally of the blades 3, the pins formed on cach of the blades will perform the cutting operation in a manner similar to that of the ordinary hair clipper.
lt will be manifest from the foregoing that when the clipper is applied to the hair, the operator may actuatc the movableblades to cut the hair when moving the clipper either forwardly or rearwardly and thus eliminating the unnecessary movement of bringing the clipper to its starting position as will be understood. llVhen using the comb 32, in connection with the clipper, the comb being arranged in advance of the clipper, the hair will be directed and disposed in proper positions to facilitate the cutting thereof with the clippers. By providing a supporting frame for the comb of this particular construction it will be evident that when the comb is disposed in advance of one of the blades, it will be disposed relatively close to the said blade thus causing the blade to cut only a short length of the hair .while when the comb is in the reverse position at the opposite stationary blade, it will be dise posed in greater spaced relation to the blade thereby causing the blade of the clipper to cut hair of a greater length. lt will thus be seen that l have provided two adjustments for the comb with respect to the cutter so as to cut the hair at diderent lengths.
When it is desired to use only one of the `When the blades 9 areV stationary blades or one side of the cutter, the handles are so mounted as to permit the reversion thereof by the removal of the uprights 28 and the head 30.
It is thought from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that a construction and operation of my device will be apparent to those skilled in the art, that minor changes in size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
