Be it known that I, JAMES WV. RUMSEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of West Berkeley, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BoX-Car-Door Structures, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
This invention has relation to that type of car-door which slides back and forth across the door-opening in the side wall of the car and the object of this invention is t0 provide simple means which will insure a \vatei,tiglit joint or seal at the vertical edges of the door when the door is closed and which at the same time will greatly.

In the drawing.y rl. and 7) designate two hollow metal door posts which are respectively anchored to the car structure in any suitable manner. These posts are substantially similar in construction. each having one of its outer vertical corners cut away to form a vertical slot in the post, the margin of this slot being formed by the front edge c of one of the side walls ofthe post and vertical edge Z of the front wall of the post.
The front vertical edge of the slidable door e is adapted, when the door is slid to closed position, to enter the clit-away corner of the post a and have a substantially tight bearing on the inner face of the front wall of the post and the outer edge c of the side wall of the post. post and tend to cam the door inwardly, thus pressing the inner face of the angle member against the vertical edge c of the side wall of the post, the movement of the door being arrested, as heretofore set forth, by the edge Z coming in contact with the bar or strip L. It will be observed that this structure provides not only a rigid door post structure, but also provides for sealing the front edge of the door against ingress of moisture. rIhis structure also tends to materially stien the door along its front edge.
The rear edge of the door is likewise provided with a metallic member which is adapted to enter the cut-away corner of the post and not only cam the door inwardly toward the body of the car, but also seal the rear edge of the door against the entrance of moisture, etc. In the present instance, this metallic member consists of an angle plate t' which is fastened to the rear edge of the door and extends along the inner face of the door, the inner member of this angle plate being set away from the inner face of the door by means of a filler strip j fastened to the inner face of the door. In closing the door, the inner plate of the angle member passes behind the front wall of the post and is cammed inwardly far enough to cause it to bear against the vertical edge c of the side wall of the post, thus sealing the rear edge of the door. rIhe filler strip j may have an extension 7c which may bear against the front face of the post to assist in holding the door against vibration as it is closed. To further hold the door against vibration when it is closed, I may bolt the iiller strip Z inside of the post b in such position that its vertical outer edge will bear against the inner plate of the angle iron when the door is closed and tend to press the same against the inner face of the outer wall of the post.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In a door structure for box-cars, two hollow metal door posts each having one of its outer corners cut away to form a vertical slot in the post, and a sliding door having a metal member at its front edge and also a metal member at its rear edge, these members being adapted to enter said slots when the door is closed and have rigid contact with the walls of the posts.
2. In a door structure for box-cars, two hollow metal posts each having one of its front corners cut away to form a vertical opening in the post, one margin of this opening being formed by the vertical edge of one of the side walls of the post and the other margin being formed by the vertical edge of one of the front walls of the post, and a sliding door provided with a metal angle plate at each vertical edge of the door, these angle plates being so positioned on the door as to enter the respective openings in the post when the door is closed and make rigid contact with the post walls along the margin of the opening, the front wall of the post serving to cam the angle member inwardly toward the body of the doer and press it in rigid Contact with the side wall of the post.
3. In a door structure for railway cars, a hollow post having a vertical opening along one of its outer corners, the margin of this opening being formed by a vertical edge of oneof the side walls of the post and by the vertical edge of one of the front walls, and a sliding door provided with an angle iron extending along the front edge of the Y door and along its inner face so as to adapt it to make Contact with the aforesaid margin of the opening when the door is closed.
4. In a door structure for railway cars, a hollow post having a vertical opening along one of its outer Corners, the margin of this opening being formed by a vertical edge of one of the side walls of the post and by the vertical edge of one of the front walls, and a sliding door provided with an angle iron extending along the front edge of the door and along its inner face so as to adapt it to make contact with the aforesaid margin of the opening when the door is closed, the front face of the door being rabbeted along its front edge and a vertical abutment bar or plate being fastened in said rabbet at a distance back from the front edge of the door, for the purpose set forth.
