FEED MECHANISM FOR GRINDING-Machines;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, ALDEN M. DRAKE, a citizen of the United Statesyresiding at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Feed Mechanism for (Jrrindin'g.- Machines, of which the following is a. SPGCT? fication. 1r f Thisinvention relates to a feed mechanism for grinding machines of the typ'e'in yvhich the work is supported upon a rotary table, and the grinding wheel is mounted on a slide and is movable toward and away from the axis of the table.
It is the object of my invention to provide improved feed mechanism for grinding machines of this type, suitable provision being made. for changing, stopping and reversing the feed of the wheel slide, and also for changing and stopping the table drive.
With this object in view one feature of my invention relates to the provision of a drive shaft having a set of change gears fast thereon and meshing with each of two sets of change gears loose upon their respective shafts. Any one of these loose gears may be connected with its shaft by means of manually slidable keys. I also provide suitable driving connections between one of' said shafts and the wheel slide, which connections include, in the referred form, a vertical shaft and provision for rendering the same. operative, including a worm and worm wheel and a friction clutch.'.. Connectiohs are also provided between the third shaft and the rotary table through, which the latter is driven. j 7
Further features of my invention .Will be hereinafter described. and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention 'is shown in the drawings in which--.
Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a grinding machine with my improved feed mechanism embodied therein, 1
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail f certain of the parts shownlin Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is' a vertical sectional view take along the line 33 in Fig. 1, and.
Fig. 41 is a detail View of the mechanism for shiftingthe clutchwhich controls the feed of the wheel slide.
Referring to the drawings, the wheel 7 is mounted on a shaft 10 rotatable in bearings in a slide 11 and provided with a wide- Specification of Letters Patent. I IPQE M WQQ July 3 1917. Application filed September 26, 1916. Serial No. 122,305.
faced pulleyor drum 12 through which it is rotated by a belt not shown. The slide 11 is longitudinally movable in guide-Ways on thejframe 1a, and is provided with a rack 15 (Fig. 3) through which it is moved longitudinally'by a feed mechanism to be described. 1 f
In the form of machine shown in the drawings the work is supported upon a magnetic, chuck 16 (Fig. ;1) mounted upon a vertical shaft 17 rotatable in a conical hearing 18. The shaftl'? is herein shown asprovided with a gear wheel 19 driven by a pinion 20 mounted on a shaft 21 which is driven through bevel gears 22 and 23. Any other suitable connections between the shaft 17 and the gear 23 may, be substituted as desired. The mechanism for driving the bevel gear 23 will be hereinafter described.
The gear box of the grinding machine contains a drive shaft 31 rotatable in bear ings 32, and having a set of change gears 33 fixed thereon. Afgear 34 is loosely mounted on the shaft 31and forms one member of a friction clutch which may be tightened by =movement of the sleeve 35 to theright, the
gear 34 being thereafter effective to drive the shaft 31. i The sleeve is controlled by a yoke 36' pivoted to the gear box at 37 andconnected by a link 38 to a lever 39 having a handle 40' by which the clutch may bemanually operated. pinion 41 fast on ashort shaft 42 rotatable in a bearing 43 and having a pulley 44 secured thereto. The pulley 4 1 is belt-connected to the main driving shaft of the grinding machine, and through these connections the shaft 31 may be continuously rotated. e
' A'shaft is mounted in bearings 51 parallel to the shaft 31 and a set of change gears 52 is loosely supported on the shaft 50. The g'ears.52 mesh with the gears 33 tight on the shaft 31, and are rotated whenever the clutch 35 is tightened. Any suitable provisionmay be' made for connecting a selected gear 52 with the shaft 50. In Fig. 2 I have shown a sliding key 53 pivoted at 54. to a rod 55 slidabl'e longitudinally in the shaft 50, and provided with a series of grooves 56 which give the rod the form, in effect, of a circular rack. This rack is engaged by a pinion 57 connected to a hand wheel 58 (Fig. 1), and through these connections the The gear 34 is in mesh with a ion key 53 may be manually moved to different longitudinal ositions. A spring 59 (Fig. 2) holds the ey 53 in engagement with the selected gear 52. By proper selection of gears, the shaft 50 is driven in the desired "speed ratio from the shaft 31.
A clutch collar 60 is slidably mounted upon the shaft 50 and is provided with teeth at its opposite ends adapted to engage corresponding teeth on the ends of bevel pinions 61 and 62 loosely mounted upon the shaft 50. These pinions are in mesh with a bevel gear 63 secured to a shaft 64 (Fig. 3) rotatable in bearings 65 in the gear box, and having a worm 66 mounted thereon, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The worm 66 drives a worm Wheel 67 loosely mounted on a vertical shaft 68 rotatable in bearings 69 and having a pinion 70 at its upper end meshing with the rack 15 on the wheel slide 11.
The worm wheel 67 is secured by pins 71 to a clutch member 72 also loose upon the shaft 68. An inner clutch member 73 is keyed to the shaft 68 and may be caused to frietionally engage the member 72 by means of a sliding sleeve 74 controlled through a yoke 75 (Fig. 4). The yoke 75 is secured to a shaft 76 to which is also secured an arm 77 connected by a link 78 to a lever 79 having a handle 80. The feed of the wheel slide may thus be started and stopped by manual movement of the lever 7 9.
A bevel gear 81 is keyed to the vertical shaft 68 and meshes with a bevel gear 82 fixed to a horizontal shaft 83 on which av hand wheel 84 is rotatably mounted. A clutch collar 85 constitutes means for connecting the hand wheel to the shaft 83 and collar 60 may be controlled by anycommon form of reversing mechanism, and is "usu-' ally operated by means of dogs, not shown, f
carried by the wheel slide 11.
A'third shaft 90 is mounted'in bearings 91 parallel to the shaft 31, and is provided with a set of change gears 92 loosely mounted thereon. A sliding key controlled from a hand wheel 93 provides means for selectively securing one of the gears 92 to the shaft 90, the mechanism being identical with that described in connection with the shaft 50. The bevel gear 23, previously described, is fixed to the outer end of the shaft 90, and through these connections the table 16 may be rotated at a selected speed.
The arrangement of gearing above described is exceedingly compactand enables me to secure all of the necessary feed changes and manipulations by the use of exceedingly simple mechanism. By means ofthe handle 40 the entire feeding mechanism may be stopped and started, and by the use of the handle the wheel feed may be stopped and started independently of the table drive. After the wheel feed is stopped the wheel slide may be moved as desired by the hand wheel 84.
Having thus described my invention it will be evident that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope ofmy invention as set forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is 1. A grinding machine having, in combination, a wheel slide, a substantially horizontal work table, a drive shaft, a set of gears fast on said shaft, a shaft forrotating the table and a wheel feed shaft each parallel to said drive shaft, a set of gears loose on each shaft and in mesh with the gears on the drive shaft, manually adjustable means to secure a selected gear in each 'set to its respective shaft, and connections from said .shafts to said table and slide.
2. In a grinding machine, a Wheel slide, a drive shaft, a wheel feed shaft parallel to said drive shaft, change gear connections between said shafts, a rack on said slide, a
vertical shaft having-a pinion engaging said rack, connections from said wheel feed shaft .to said verticalshaftincluding a worm and Worm wheel and a friction clutch, and a hand lever connected to move said clutch.
.3. A grinding machine having, in combination, a wheel slide, a substantially horizontal rotary work table, a drive shaft, change gear connections from said shaft to said Wheel slide and from said shaftto said rotary table, means to stop and start the wheel feed and the table drive simultaneously while the wheel is continuously driven, and additional means to stop the wheel feed while the table and Wheel are continuously driven.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto af' fixed my signature.
