IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 22,468, dated January 2, 1872.

Specification describing an Improvement in Button-Nails or Nail-Buttons, invented by ED- MUND KOLBEN, of New York city.

The article is a nail having a head like the body of a richly-covered button. It may be driven with a hammer having a face of soft material, for which I propose to make another application for patent. The importance ofthe soft face of the hammer is to avoid injury to the rubber or other soft material covering the head.

I proceed to describe Wh at I consider the bestA means of carrying out my invention.

I take Well-made tacks-say twelve or fourteen ounces to the thousandformed With large strong heads and smooth round shanks. These form the bodies and points of my improved nail, and also the central or innermost portion of the head. I have marked this part A A', the latter distinguishing the ordinary large tack-head. I provide all the materials, except the eyes, as if about to manufacture ordinary rich-covered buttons. I thrust thepoint and body of the tack through a piece of paste-board, or the like, as shown by B, and through a collet, C, and apply it, With its attachments, within a cap, E, of metal, with a lining piece, D, and a covering piece, G, exactly asit' to manufacture covered buttons, and using a press suitably prepared to accommodate the long nail instead of an ordinary eye, press the parts forcibly and properly together, the same as in completing an ordinary covered button. The button-head is strongly and stiffly secured, and presents the same rich and attractive appearance as buttons With eyes, While the nail may be driven with or Without prickin g a hole therefor previously, and will attach the button stiffly and strongly to any material into which it' may be driven. It may be used merely for ornament, or both for ornamentation of the work and for holding cloth, leather, or the like.

I can use all the varieties of sizes of heads `and all the varieties of materials and proportions of thickness of the head, and of convexity or concavity Which are used in ordinary buttons. I can use any length of' nail Which may be desired. I considerI it important that the nail shall 'have a large head; but it is not important that the head be smooth or in any degree ornamental. On the contrary the completeness with which it is covered renders these points absolutely non-essential. I propose to tin the nail in some cases, or to manufacture the nail of brass to avoid trouble from rusting.

I claim. as my invention- The within-described button-nail, having the head A stifdy held between a metallic collet, G, and a metallic cap, E, with suitable lining material and with a covering piece, G, of Woven or analogous soft fabric covering the cap, the whole forming a nail with a head covered with fabric, as specied.
