EDWARD OCONNELL, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FOUNTAIN -COIVIB Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Application ledlVIarch 10, 1916. Serial No. 83,394.
To all whom t may conce/m:
Be it known that I, EDWARD OCONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved fountain comb especially adapted for use for' applying hair tonic, or other liquid directly to the scalp, the object of the invention being to provide an improved comb of this character which is simple in construction, which prevents the waste of 'hair tonic or other material and which may be readily operated.
rlhe invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a fountain comb constructed :in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view on a larger scale.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the plane indicated by the line b-b of Fig. 1 and showing the stop or gage on the plug of the tubular valve.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a tubular reservoir 1 which is adapted to be filled with hair tonic or other liquid medicament and one end 2 of which forms the handle for the comb. A stopper knob 3 is screwed in one end of the tubular reservoir and a plunger operating rod 4 is swivelly mounted in the opposite end of the reservoir and is here shown as having a diametrically reduced portion 5 which is free to revolve in a collar 6 secured in the bore of the tubular reservoir. A plunger 7 is arranged for longitudinal movement in the reservoir and is also arranged for longitudinal movement on a sleeve nut 8. Said plunger is beveled as shown at 9 to facilitate the assembling of the comb after the parts thereof have been taken apart for washing. The plunger has a notch 10 in one side which is engaged by a longitudinally'arranged tongue 11 in one side of thebore of the reservoir. The tongue and notch prevent the plunger from turning, as will be understood.
The sleeve nut is provided in one side with a longitudinal groove 12 which receives a key 13 which extends from end to end of the sleeve nut. At one end of the key is an outturncd stop 14 which engages in a notch 15 in the plunger. The key also has an outturned stop 16 at its opposite end.
A coiled extensile spring 17 bears between the plunger andthe stop 16 and is arranged around the sleeve nut. An operating' screw shaft 18 passes through and engages the threaded bore of the sleeve nut and has one end secured to the operating knob 4 as at 19 and has the other end pointed as at 20 and spaced from the stopper knob 3. Hence the screw shaft can be revolved by turning the operating knob 4 to cause the sleeve nut to move the plunger in either direction in the reservoir.
The comb is provided with tubular teeth 21 of which any suitable number may be used. Preferably I provide the comb with six teeth and space them one inch apart at the bottom and one inch and a quarter apart at the top. The comb head 22 is provided with a tubular longitudinal bore 23 which forms a seat for the tubular valve 24. @ne end of the tubular valve is provided with a screw plug 25.- The other end of the tubular valve has a plug 26 which is formed with a handle 27 to enable the tubular valve to be partly turned to cause the openings 28 therein to be arranged in or out of registry with the bores of the tubular teeth. The reservoir has a discharge opening 29 and the tubular valve has an opening 30 which communicates with said opening 29 so that the tubular valve is supplied by the reservoir with hair tonic or other liquid medicament or preparation for use on the scalp and when using the comb, if the valve be turned to cause its openings 28 to register with the bores of the teeth, the hair tonic or other medicament or preparation will be applied by the tubular teeth directly to the scalp, as will be understood. The plug 26 is provided with a stop or gage projection 31 to strike against the tubular reservoir when the tubular valve is turned to the position required to cause the openings 28 to register with the bores of the teeth.
The spring 17 acts on the plunger to force the latter against the hair tonic or 'other' liquid in the reservoir, to keep such liquid under pressure and hence insure a iiow of the same through the teeth. From time to time as the hair tonic or other liquid is used the sleeve nut may be adjusted longitudinelly in the reservoir by turning the knob 4 and hence also the screw shaft 18 as Will be understood. The flovv of the liquid through the teeth prevents them from clogging up With dandruE or the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A fountain comb having tubular teeth, a, reservoir to supply liquid to the teeth, a plunger inthe reservoir to exert pressure on the liquid therein, a sleeve nut on which the plunger is mounted for longitudinal movement, ascrew shaft to operate the sleeve nut and a spring on said sleeve nut to move the plunger in one direction and cause the same to exert pressure on the contents of the reservoir.
2. A fountain comb having tubular teeth,
.voir, and knobs in the ends of the reservoir,
one forming a stopper, the other knob being f swivelly mounted in the bore of the reservoir and attached to said screw shaft.
In testimony whereof I niiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
