nnirnn snares raarnni'r ALFRED H. GARSTENSEN, OF MILVTAUKEE, VJISCONSIN.
HAT-BOX.
Application filed August 9, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ALFRED H. CARsTnN- sex, a citizen of the United States, residing at ltfilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hat boxes.
The object of this invention is to provide a hat box designed more particularly for use on clothes press shelves, but may be used in other relations, and one of the principal obj ects of this invention is to construct the box so that it can be readily opened and closed without removing the same from the shelf in a closet.
A. further object of this invention is to provide a hat box having a removable cover and hinged front wall whereby the contents of the box can be quickly and readily removed without disturbing the box or moving the same from the shelf.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a hat box of this character, which will be simple, practical, and a comparatively inexpensive structure, and will be easily and quickly assembled.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box showing the front wall partly open,
Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective View of the cover showing the front wall of the same partially opened against the tension of the elastic band, and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View of the box when assembled.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, l designates generally'a hat box made in accordance with this invention and comprising a bottom wall 2, side walls 3, and rear or back wall 4. The side walls 3 are secured to the rear wall l by strips of fab- Speeification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 114,027.
ric 5 secured to at 6.
The front wall 7 is hingedly secured to the front edge of the bottom wall 2 by a strip of fabric 8, which is secured thereto by glue or any other suitable adhesive substance. The front wall 7 is provided in its upper edge centrally thereof with a slot 7 the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The front wall abuts the front vertical edges of the side walls when in a closed position. A. pair of metal angle members 9 have one of their members 10 rigidly secured to the front face of the front wall by rivets 11 or other suitable fastening means. The opposite members 12 of the angles extend rearwardly beyond the rear face of the front wall and in the direction of the rear wall of the box, to engage the outer face of the side walls of the box when the front wall is in a closed position, so as to prevent any lateral movement of the front wall with relation to the side walls and eliminate any accidental disarrangement thereof.
A removable cover 13 is provided for the box, which cover has the top wall 14, side wall 16. The side walls 14 are secured to the rear wall by suitable fabric strips 17 in a manner similar to the securing of the side walls of the box.
A front wall 18, is hingedly secured to the front end of the top wall by a fabric strip to permit the outward movement of the front wall in a manner similar to the front wall of the box. To hold the front wall of the cover against disarrangement or getting out of alinement there is provided a pair of angle members 20, which have one of their members secured to the front face of the front wall by rivets 21, the opposite ends of the angles extending rearwardly to e11- gage the outer faces of the side wall when assembled.
An elastic band 22 is secured by one of its ends to the under face of the top centrally thereof by a staple 23 or in any suitable manner. The opposite end of the band is secured to the front wall of the cover centrally between the ends thereof as at 24C in any suitable manner, the purpose of the bands being to normally hold the front wall in engagement with the side walls and against outward movement.
When the cover is placed on the box the band 22 rests in. the slot 7 of the front wall the outer faces thereof as of the box and it can be readily seen that any lateral movement will be eliminated when the cover is placed upon the box;
In use'it will be obvious that a hat box made in accordance with this invention may be placed upon a shelf and that the contents thereof may be easily and quickly removed from and replaced without the box having to be removed from the shelf.
Like changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention as defined in the claims hereto appended.
What is claimed is:
1. A hat box including a bottom wall, side walls and a rear wall secured to the bottom wall, a front wall hingedly secured to the forward end of the bottom wall, means carried by the opposite vertical side or ges of the front wall and engaging the outer faces of the side walls for preventing lateral movement of the front wall with relation thereto, said front wall provided in its upper end centrally of its side edges with a 0 slot, a cover, said cover having a front wall,
said front wall being hingedly secured to the cover, and an elastic band carried by the cover and its front wall and resting in the slot of the front wall of the box for normally holding the cover in a closed position and upon the box.
2. A hat box including a bottom wall, side walls and a rear wall secured to the bottom wall, a front wall hingedly secured to the forward edge of the bottom wall, angle members secured to the opposite vertical side edges of the front wall, their opposite ends extending in the direction of the rear wall and engaging the outer faces of the side walls to limit the lateral movement of the front wall 4 and an elastic band secured centrally to the top and to the front wall for normally holding the same in against the side walls of said cover, and adapted to rest in the slot formed in the front wall of the box and prevent accidental displacement of said front Wall.
In testimony whereof I alflx my signature in presence of two witnesses."
