To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC N. GIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVinterhaven, in the county of Polk and I State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved vise especially adapted for use by carpenters, and has as its primary object to prov vide a device of this character which may be attached to a carpenters bench and which may be easily and quickly operated to either clamp or free the work.
The invention has as a further object to the use of the ordiprovide a vise wherein nary clamping screw will be ehmmated and wherem the space between the clamping aw with will be unobstructed to receive the work. And the invention has as a still further object to provide an easy and effective means for sizes of work and wherein the clamping jaw adjusting the vise to accommodate various of the vise will be yieldably urged to a position for receiving the work.
Other and incidental objects will appear as the description proceeds and in the drawferred embodiment of the invention and wherein similar reference characters desig-' nate -co-rrespondmgiparts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view showing my improved device applied'to a conventional type of work. bench, Fig. 2 is a sectional view more particularly showing the construction, and

While I have indicated that my improved vise is particularly adapted for carpenters use and have illustrated the vise in connection with a carpenters work-bench, still, it
will be seen ast h des ription of the invenings wherein I have illustrated the pretion progresses, that the vise is equally applicable for use in other adaptations and I do not, therefore, wish to limit myself in this regard, as my improved vise is adapted for attachment to any suitable character of support other than a work-bench, the said bench will be designated as a support, slnce, as will presently appear, such bench in reallty, supports the viseand in using the word support, I will not, therefore be limited to a work-bench or any other particular character of support. Coming now more particularly to the subect of the present invention, I employ a clamping jaw or member 13 which is in the nature of a straight bar and may be formed of wood or other suitable material. Pivotally supporting the clamping 'jaw 1.3 adjacent its lower extremity, is a bolt or other suitable fastening device 14 which extends freely through the said jaw and is detachably connected to the leg 12 of the workbench 10. Preferably interposed between the lower extremity of the jaw 13 and the said leg of the work-bench is a spacing block or Washer 15 which surrounds the bolt 14. The jaw 13 is adapted to coact with the side member 11 of the work-bench in receiving the work and particular attention is now dirooted to the fact that since the said jaw is loosely mounted upon the bolt 14, it may pivot'thereon in a plane at right angles to the axis of the bolt to seat flatly against the adjacent side of the work. By this arrangement, the clamping jaw may accommodate itself to work of uneven contour.
Associated with the clamping jaw 13 is a rock arm or lever 16 which may also be formed of wood or other suitable material. The arm 16 is in the nature of a straight bar and is pivotally supported at a point intermediate its ends by a pin 17 to extend at substantially right angles to the jaw 13. The pin 17 is arranged to extend freely through the side member 11 of the workbench 10 and 1s screw threaded adjacent its inner extremity to adjustably and detachably engage an anchoring member or plate 18mou'nted upon the inner side of the said I engage a piece of workof uneven contour.

At its innerextremity,the rock arm 16 is preferably cut away to receive the clamping V jaw 13 and is pivotally connected to the said jaw adjacent the upper extremity thereof, by a bolt or other suitable fastening de- .vice '21, which extends tliroughthe said aw and freely through the rock arm as particularly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In this connectiornit is pointed out that the rock arm 16 is provided with slots elongated longitudinally of the said arm to freely refceive the pin 17 andthe bolt 21 respectively so asto compensate for the rocking moveme'ntzof the jaw 13 whentransversely shifted into angular relation to the member 11 to Mounted upon the outer extremity of the u rock arm 16 is a cam lever 22, shown in I nected' thereto while the arm is provided detail in Fig; 4 of the drawings. The jaw 13 may be easily and quickly adjusted relative to the work-bench for receiving work of various sizes, by simply turning the be-readily grasped for this purpose. When the cam lever 22 is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the work maybe positioned'between the jaw 13 and r the bench 10. To clamp the work, the cam lever is then swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, of the drawings,
causing the arm 16 to rock upon the pivot pin 17' for urging the jaw 13 toward the work to tightly clamp the work in place and c of course, the jaw lS may bereleased with equal facility by simply returning the cam lever 22 to its normal position when the spring 19 Will act to move the saidjaw away from the work. It will therefore be seen that I provide an arrangement wherein the jaw 13 may be easily and quickly operated to either clamp or release the work and as previously brought out, the said jaw is so mounted that, under ordinary circumto securely engage therewith.

A device of the character described including a support, a pivotedclamping jaw associated therewith, a rock arm pivotally connected to said jaw, a pivot pin adjustably supporting the jaw with respect to the support, means carried by said pin and acting upon the said arm for normally urging the said jaw away from the support, and means associated with the said arm for urging the jaw toward the support. 41. A device of the character described including a support, a clamping jaw associated therewith, a rock arm operatively connected to the said jaw to extend laterally there from, means pivotally supporting the said arm and adjustable for spacing the jaw either toward or away from the support,
and means associated with the free extremity of the said arm for urging the jaw toward the support to coact therewith.

A device of the character described including a support, a clamping jaw associated therewith, a rock arm operatively connected to said jaw, means pivotally supporting said arm, yieldable means associated with the said first mentioned means and acting upon the arm for normally urging the jaw away from the support, and means operatively connected to the free extremity of said arm for 'urging the jaw toward the support to coact therewith.
6. A device of the character described includinga support, a clamping jaw freely connected thereto, a rock arm freely connected to the said jaw to extend laterally therefrom, a pivot pin freely engaging the said rock arm and adjustable upon the support for spacing the jaw either toward or away from the support, a spring carried by the said pin and acting upon the arm for normally urging the jaw away from the support, and a cam lever carried by the free extremity of said arm and shiftable to coact with the support for urging the said jaw toward the support to coact therewith.
7 The combination with a work bench, of a clamping jaw pivotally connected to the bench with its free extremity arranged to coact therewith, a rock arm operatively engaging the said jaw to extend laterally therefrom and pivotally supported upon the bench, and means cooperating with the free end of said arm and with the bench for rocking the arm to shift the said jaw toward the bench to active position.
