Specification of Letters Patent neonatal,
ap lication area August as, role. Serial No. 117,553.
To all whom it may concern:
. to provide slicing knives of the character de scribed, the blades of which are adjustable laterally of one another or with respect to a central blade rigid with the handle, so as to enable the user to cut a plurality of slices from a body of material, such as bread, calre, etc., at one operation, said slices of the desired thickness; to provide lrnives of the character described which are capable of fine adjustment so that it is possible to provide a predetermined number of slices of material from each of several masses of foodstuff of uniform size, once the distance between the blades is gaged; and, to provide knives of the character described which may be adjusted to cut relatively thin slices of material from bodies, such as hams or beets,
or to cut relatively thick slices as from loaves of bread, etc. Uther objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying ing, forminga part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of a hiife embodying my invention, the bades of which dll enter a body of material, such as a loaf of bread, to cut slices therefrom. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the knife, portions of the blade being removed to condense the view. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the knife at that portion where the blades are in coupled relation with the handle. Fig. l is a perspective view of a bushing which may form a knife.
In the drawing, where similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the views, A. designates a carrier or handle; B a blade rigid with said handle; C a plurality of blades movable toward'and from each other and toward and from blade B; D means for adjusting the position of blade B with redrawpart of the.
spect to each other and with respect to blade B; and, E a scale facilitating adjustment to provide slices of material, of predetermined thickness.
Referring first to the handle it, it may he made of any suitable material, such as wood, metal, or fiber, and is formed to provide two 1 arms 5 in spaced relation at one end portion of the handle, said arms being preferably slotted inwardly from their ends, as indi cated at 6, for a purpose to be subsequently set forth As tothe blade B, it is preferably disposed in the longitudinal axis of the handle Patented Nov, 21, 1M6,
so as to project therefrom at that end between the arms 5, the blade being provided with a tang i which extends into the main body portion of the handle and is secured iii-place, as hereinafter described, by rivet'8.
lhe blade B is also preferably provided with a perforation 9, the axis of which is transversely of the blade and adjacent the handle A, the said axis extending through the slot 6 of arms 5 Referring now to the blade 0, in the example shown, two are provided, one at each side of the blade B and in parallel relation thereto, each blade G being provided with a screw-threaded bore 10, the threads of the bore of one blade extending in a direction counter to that of the threads of the other blade.
Referring now tothe means D for adjusting the position of blades C with respect to each other and with respect to the blade B, it comprises a revoluble member 11 a thumb-wheel 12 rigid therewith; and preferably a bushing 13 having the dual function of retaining the blades B and C in substantially the same plane, and retaining the revo-luble member'll in operative relation to the handle A. lhe revoluble member 11 is provided with two screwthreaded sections 14 and 15., the threads of one section extending in a direction counter to those of the other section, and'said sections separately in screw-threaded engagernent with the movable blades 0, the screw-threaded sections extending through the bores 10 of said blades. The said revoluble member is also provided with a cylindrical portion 16 which extends through the perforation 9 of blade B,'the ends of the revoluble member being preferably reduced as at 17 and lying in the slots 6 of arms 5. lhe bushing 13 is protill? ber 11. The main body portion 18 is also slotted as at 21. for the reception of the tang 7 of blade B.
In order to retaln the bushing 13 in place,
' a plate E is provided, secured to the handle A as by screws 22 in screw-threaded engagement with the arms 5, this plate being provided with graduations 23 which facilitate the spacing of the blades C a predetermined distance from the blade B as is obvious from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the-drawing.
In assembling the blades into operative 'relation to the handle. and to the means D the revoluble member 11 may be first passed through the perforation 9 of blade B, whereafter the blades C are fed upon the screw-threaded sections of the revoluble member. These elements are then assembled into operative relation to the handle A, as by driving the tang 7 into the handle, the end portions 17 of the revoluble member 1 11 extending into the slot '6. The bushing 13. is then passed downwardly with the walls of slotsQQ embracing the end portions of the revolfible member, and the'slot 21' accommodating the tang 7 of the blade B. After the bushing is in place, the blade B may be driven tightly into engagement with the handle A so that theend portions transversely of, the blades C engage the main body portion 18 of bushing 13, maintaining all of the blades in substantially the same plane. The rivet 8 may then be fixed extending through the handle A and through the tang 7, after which the plate E may be disposed into operative relation "to the handle preventing casual displacement of the bushing 13. Adjustment may be attained by rotating the thumb-wheel 12 which, in one direction, moves the blades C toward each other and toward the blade B, whereas, if moved in a counter-direction, the said blades C are moved away from each other and away from the blade B. The
operator may gage the distance between blades by reference to the delineations on plate E.
Changes in details maybe made with-,
out departingv from the spirit or scope ofv my invention; but, K i
