To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr Roy RAMSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lykens, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turbine-Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in turbine blowers especially adapted for producing undergrate draft for furnaces, the apparatus, however, being susceptible of use wherever an artificial current of air under pressure is desired.
The primary object of the device is to provide a very light construction which enables the highest efficiency in performing its draft function as well as insuring economy in manufacture.
To this end the invention consists of a rotor or rotatable fan member for producing the air current, said fan member carrying peripheral impact or turbine blades arranged in spaced series and surrounded by an annular casing provided with stationary blades lying intermediate the series aforesaid, the blades receiving impulse from a pressure medium introduced into the casing above mentioned.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through an apparatus forming the embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, a portion of the annular casing being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 38 of Fig. 1, portions being broken. away. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken approximately on the line 55 of Fig. 2..
Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a casing or passage leading to a furnace grate, said passage being located as usual in a wall 2. 7 At the mouth of the easing 1 is disposed the improvements forming the subject matter of this invention, which include the rotor 3 consisting of the fan blades 4 attached to the hub 5 which is carried by the spindle 6. Surrounding the fan blades 4: is an annular ring 7 and upon said ring are provided two annular rows or series of impact blades 8, 8. These outer and inner series of blades are similar in formation, being substantially semicircular in cross section, the rows being arranged in spaced relation to each other as best disclosed by Fig. 1 of the drawings. The spindle 6, upon which the rotor revolves, has its outer bearing in a vertically disposed bracket 9, and this bracket is formed with an annular casing 10 which surrounds the ring 7 and its impact blades 8, 8 hereinbefore mentioned. The bracket and casing are preferably attached to the mouth of the passage or conduit, as by means of the bolts 11 above and below said conduit. At the inner end, the spindle 6 is supported by a horizontal bar 12, said bar being attached to the spindle by the nut 13 carried by the inner end of the spindle. The bar 12 is slidingly received in offset recesses 14. at diametrically opposite points of the conduit 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. It will be noted that the casing 10 at the top is formed, at one side, with a nozzle casing 15 to which the steam pipe 16 leads, said pipe preferably having a main throttle valve 17 for controlling admission of the pressure medium into the nozzle casing. This nozzle casing has steam ports 18 arranged to direct the steam against the impact blades located directly opposite said ports, whereby impulse is imparted to the rotor as will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art to which this invention refers. An independent valve control 17 is provided for each of said ports, whereby full pressure at all or any one of the ports may be obtained according to requirements.
An especial feature of my invention is the provision of stationary impact blades which are formed on the annular casing 10 projecting inwardly therefrom into the space between the annular impact blades carried by the rotor, said stationary blades being designated 19. Furthermore, these blades are of similar form to the impact blades 8 and 8, excepting that they are reversely arranged or positioned with respect to said movable blades. It will be noted in Fig. 3, that the stationary blades 19 extend only the length of the nozzle casing 15. r
It will be understood from the foregoing description that the steam admitted through the ports 18 will act against the outer row or series of impact blades 8, then against the stationary blades 19 formed on the annular casing 10, and finally impacting against the second series or inner row of impact blades 8, thus afi'ording a double impulse to the rotor before final exhausting from the casing through the exhaust passage that the bearings M will be amply supplied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: e
1. In a device of the class described, the
combination with aconduit having its end flanged outwardly, of a turbine blower comprising an annular casing of a diameter larger than the diameter of the conduit, means for attaching the casing against the face of the flanged end of the conduit, said flanged end thereby forming a side of the annular casing, a fan arranged at the mouth of the conduit, a peripheral rim on said fan of a diameter substantially corresponding to the diameter of the conduit whereby to cooperate with the sides of the casing to form a closure therefor, spaced rows of impact blades on the rim of the fan, a series of stationary impact blades on the casing projecting into the space between the impact blades of the fan, and a nozzle arranged laterally of the casing for directing impelling fluid against the blades aforesaid.
2. In a turbine blower of the class described, the combination of a rotary fan, a conduit at the mouth of which said fan is disposed, an outer bracket member in which the fan is supported at one side, an annular casing formed on said bracket, means connecting said bracket and casing to the conduit, a nozzle casing located at one side of said annular casing, impulse members arranged on the periphery of said fan against which a pressure medium from the nozzle impinges, and an inner supporting member for said fan having slidable interlocking connection with the conduit, said conduit being formed with an exhaust passage leading from the annular casing aforesaid and with lateral recesses to receive the inner supporting member aforesaid.
