WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1916.
Application l'ed Mayl, 1916. Serial No. 97,825.
To all whom t .may concern Be it known :that I, MARION G. Norms, a citizen of ther` United States, residing at Pond Creek, in the. vcounty yof Grant and State. of Oklahoma,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv-Wrenches; andi do hereby declare the following to be aofull, clear, and exact' description ofthe invention, such as will enablenothers skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
Myy invention', relates to new and useful improvements inv wrenches4 and isy particularly adaptable for rotating pipes, bolts, nuts, and the like, .and my `Objectis to-provide a hollow handle Sectionfto which-isyattached a fixed jaw.
A further object' is-to providea jawI for cooperating with thexedjaw and slidably mounted in they handle section.
A, further object is'to provide; a lever adapted .to cooperate-with the shank-'ofthe movable jaw' for holding the samein adjusted position.
A further object; is: to A@provi-del ay screw driver at the free end of the lever. And a further object istozprovide means for normally holding the lever in fixed position in line with or at right angles to the handle section whereby said handle section=may vbe used for rotating the leverl whenused as a screw driver.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter seti; forthJ and moreparticularlypointed out in the accompanying specica-f tion.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the wrench showing the jaws and operating lever therefor in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view as seen on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3'is a similar view as seen on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a similar view as seen on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals .designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 1ndicates the handle section which is preferably rectangular in cross section and hollow, a portion of the end wall of the handle section being removed to form an Opening 2 for the reception of a movable jaw 3, said movable jaw havinga shank 4 adapted to slide lengthwise of the handle section, the
length of the-shank being substantially onehalf the length-of the body portion. Thel movable jaw 3 is held in perfect alinement with the handle section by extending apin 5 transversely of the movable jaw, the ends of the `pin being entered in slots 6 in the side walls of the handle section. 4
Cooperating with the movable jaw 3 is a fixed jaw 4, one end of which is entered through the opening 2 between the side walls of the ,handle section and at one end thereof, the end of the jaw entering the handle section having a seat or shoulder 8 which engagesthe top'wall of the handle section, said jaw beingsecuredf to the handle section by extending rivets 9 transversely through the side-walls of the handle section and through the interposed portion ofthe fixed jaw.
Oneedge of the shank is provided with a plurality of notches 10 with which engage teeth 11 carried bythe lever 12, said lever having a circular head 13 at its inner end through which extendsa pivot 14, the'adj acentend wall of the handle section being removed topermit the lever to readily swing intoalinement with the handle section and shank or at right angles thereto,'the pivot 14 extending through the side walls of the handle section ata point between the ends of the handle section. One facewall 15 of the notches is at right angles to the trend of the shank, while the opposite wall 16 of each notch is preferably S-shaped or composed of two oppositelyextending curves,l
while the wal/ls 17 of the teeth 11 are likewise at right angles to the trend of the lever and the walls 18 thereof 'similarly curved to the wall 16 of the notches 10, the straight walls of the notches and teeth cooperating with each other to-hold the movable jaw in fixed position, while the curved walls of the notches and teeth permit said teeth to readily enter Or leave the notches.
The end of the lever 12 is extended a distance beyond the end of the handle section 1 and is preferably provided with a screw driver point 19, and in order to hold the lever in alinement with the handle section, or at right angles thereto so that the handle section may be used as a lever or handle for rotating 4the lever when used as a screw driver, the curved face of the head 13 is provided with recesses 20 and 21 with which is adapted to engage a spring detent 22 fixed to the adjacent end wall of the handle section l, the free end of the detent extending between the side walls of the handle section so that when the lever is in alinement with the handle section or in the position shown in Fig. l, the end of the detent will be in engagement with the recess 20, while when the lever is swung to right angles to the handle section, Athe detent will engage the recess 21 and hold the same against lateral swinging movement while the lever is being used as a screw driver, the handle section l serving as a cross head or handle for rotating the screw driver and said detent will also serve to hold the lever in fixed position and out of alinement with the shank while the movable aw is being adjusted.
The meeting faces of the jaws 3 and 7 are preferably provided with serrations 23 and 24 respectively on the portions thereof projecting beyond the handle section so that a round object, such as a pipe, bolt, or the like, may be readily rotated by the wrench.
In applying this form of wrench to use, the lever l2 is swung outwardly until the teeth 1l are out of engagement with the notches 10 and the object to be rotated positioned between the jaws 3 and 7 when the lever is again swung inwardly and the teeth thereon entered in corresponding notches in the shank 4C, the inward swinging movement of the lever forcing the movable jaw into engagement with the object between the jaws and by providing theV spring detent, the jaw 3 will be held against movement in either direction until the teeth l1 are again disengaged therefrom. The object in projecting the free end of the lever beyond the end of the handle section not only permits the lever to be used as a screw driver, but said projecting end can be readily grasped for releasing the teeth 11 of the lever from the notches lO of the shank.
This form of wrench can be very cheaply constructed and may be made in various sizes as occasion may require and as all the parts are constructed of metal, it will be practically indestructible from use. It will also be seen that the wrench structure may be used in vise formation for holding articles of various kinds and by extending the free end of thelever 12 beyond the end of the handle section, the projecting portions of the lever may be readily grasped for swinging the lever on its pivot for disengaging the teeth from the notches.
Having thus fully described my invention 4what I claim as new and desire to secure by gage the said recesses, said detent when engaged in one of said recesses serving to hold the lever in locked engagement with the movable jaw to prevent movement of the movable jaw with respect to the fixed jaw.
In testimony whereof I have lsigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
