SUPPLEMENTAL TABLE-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1916.
Application filed October 22, 1915. Serial No. 57,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE J. LE CLAIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey andState of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supplemental Table- Tops, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in supplemental table tops, the object of this invention being to provide a novel form of table top, which can be easily and quickly secured to difierent sizes of tables, whereby a table of larger dimensions is produced, which can be readily used for various purposes.
With this and other objects in view, my invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of my invention when applied to a table; Fig. 2 is a section taken upon the line XX of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken upon the line YY of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a perspective of one of the-clamps, and Fig. 5 is a section of a detail illustrating a table top when used without an extra leaf.
In carrying my invention into use, the supplemental table top is made of suitable dimensions, and configuration, the table top in the present instance having a curved edge and when used with an extra leaf resembling an oval. When used without the extra leaf it is substantially circular. The table top as illustrated'has two end sections 2 and 3, the contiguous edges 4 and 5 of which have mated grooves and tongues respectively 6 and 7. The grooved element 6 (see Fig. 5) is in the form of a strip 8 secured along the edge of the section2-below its surface, such .as by gluing or the use of nails, screws or other fastening means as desired. The tongue member 7 is also in the form of a strip 9 fastened to the lower surface of the top section 3, along the edge 5 in the same manner as strip 8. When the sections of the top are closed and joined together, the tongue and groove coincide and assist in forming a tight joint between the parts. When an extra leaf such as 10 is employed between the sections 2 and 3 of the top, (see Fig. 2), said leaf is also provided with tongue and groove elements 11 and 12 constructed in the same manner as described and secured along the meeting edges of the leaf to perform the same function as described. An additional reinforcement is also en1- ployed between the sections 2 and 3 of the top or between said sections and the extra leaf, said extra reinforcement consisting of a cleat 13 secured to the lower surface of section 2 and disposed centrally with a projecting tongue 14 extending from the edge 4. A corresponding cleat 15 is suitably secured to the lower surface of section 3 and is also provided with a projecting end or tongue 16. The projecting ends 14 and 16 are adapted to intermesh when the sections 2 and 3 are joined together without an interposed leaf such as 10,.said projecting ends fitting in corresponding recesses 17 in the oppositely disposed members 13 and 15. The adjacent side edges of the projecting members 14 and 16 have a tongue and groove connection, such as 18 (see Fig. 3), the parts of which overlap sldewise, but permit longitudinal slidingof the parts together to form a close joint. The extra leaf 10 isprovided with cleats 20 across its lower surface, which has corresponding tongue and grooved projections 33 and 34 which join with the corresponding projections from the cleats 13 and 15, so that the same character of joint is produced, either when the leaf is employed, or when the secpairs of grooves such as 21 and.22 in which the ends 23 of a bail24 on a clamp are. adapted to engage or slide when the clamp is being adjusted. The body of the bail is secured to a plate 25 having a lip 26 through which a clamp screw 27 is threaded. In use the clamp is moved with its bail engaged with the reinforcing strips, such as 8 and 9 until the clamp screw 27 can be engaged with a support such as a table top 30, whereupon the screw can be set with its buffer end 28 pressing against the support to hold the parts of the supplemental table tightly clamped to said support and held firmly toa table.
extra leaf and as many clamps such as detion following the lines indicated above.
The lower surfaces of the parts such as the strips 8 and 9 are covered by felt or other suitable bufiing material indicated at 32 for the purpose of protecting the surface of the table 30 or other support from becoming scratched or marred. These supplemental table top sections with or without extra leaves provided with intermeshing cleats and projecting tongues are rigidly and securely joined together by the construction described and are held together and upon a table of any size securely and firmly.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire .to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire'to protect by Letters Patent is I l. A supplemental table top, comprising,
in combination, top sections having cleats alon their meetin ed 'es mortised to ether :2?
said cleats having longitudinal grooves in their opposite sides and clamps having bail hooks engaging said cleats in said grooves and adapted to hold said sections together upon a table.
2. A supplemental table top, comprising, in combination, top sections having cleats secured thereto along their longitudinal meeting edges provided with interlocking faces and additional cleats secured at an angle to said first mentioned cleats having projecting intermeshing tongues slidably- EUGENE J. LE CLAIRE.
