Description

A. CHAMBLEY.'
VENTILATOR.
APPLICATION FILEDVMAR. 4. 1915.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
UNITED STATES PATENT UFFIGE.
ALEXANDER CHAMBLE Y, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VENTILATOR.
To all whom it'may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER CHAM- BLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Ventilators,
of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to pirovide a novel construction for ventilating basements and other rooms, which, while allowing free passage of air into the rooms, shall effectually prevent entrance of water, snow, &c., the invention contemplating an arrangement of parts whereby the quantity of air passing through the ventilator may be varied or regulated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a novel form of pavement or monitor ventilator which shall be substantial, simple, and inexpensive in construction, with its parts so designed that when employed to ventilate basement rooms, it shall not be likely to have its water drainage openings clogged but shall be capable of being easily inspected and cleaned.
These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure'l is a sectional perspective view illustrating my invention as constructed to serve as a ventilator for basement rooms; and Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective view illustrating my invention designed as a roof ventilator.
In Fig. 1 of the above drawings, 1 represents a concrete or other pavement having a more or less elongated opening (though other forms of openings may be employed) provided with a cover grating 2 which, in the present instance, is shown as supported. flush with the top or pavement surface. Said grating is carried mainly by the vertical flanges of two angle irons 3, the arrangement being such that while said flanges extend upwardly along the edges of the opening, the other flanges of said angles extend horizontally into the concrete or other body of the pavement. Extending downwardly below the opening in the pavement is a trough shaped structure 4 preferably of sheet metal and made of such a width that its side members are slightly farther apart than the width of the opening between the angle irons 3. These members are provided with outwardly extended flanges 5 prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably embedded in the concrete of the pavement under saidangle irons.
The trough 4 is connected at any suitable number of points to sewer or drain pipes 6 and at a suitable distance above its bottom is provided with a false bottom in the form of a grate'or perforated; plate 7 carried in the present case on angle irons 8 fixed to the sides of said trough. In each of the vertical sides of the trough is a suitable number of elongated openings or other suitably formed openings which may be completely closed by dampers 9 preferably hinged to the lower edges thereof in any desired manner. It will be understood that these openings in the vertical sides of the trough structure 4: provide communication with the interior of a room or rooms from which the air is free to pass through said opening into said trough and out through the openings of the grating 2. The flow of air through these openings may be controlled by adjusting the dampers 9, and obviously Water, snow, etc., entering the trough through the openings of the grating, is free to pass through the openings in the false bottom 7 into the lower part of said trough without possibility of entering the adjacent room through the openings of the lower sides of said stucture. Any solid matter not passing out through the drain pipe 6 may be'removed from time totime, since access may be had to the bottom of the trough 4 by removing the grating 52 and the false bottom 7.
In that form of my invention shown in Fig. 2, the construction employed is similar to that of Fig. 1 except that it is designed to provide ventilation through a concrete trough structure or monitor 11 and regu- 1 late the air passing through these by dampers 13 hinged to one edge of each opening, in the case shown, the bottom edge. As in the form of my invention shown in Fig. 1, there is a free passage from the interior of a room into the trough structure 4 and out through the openings or passages 12 in the inverted trough 11, While any rain, etc., passing into the ventilator through these passages necessarily passes into the bottom part of said trough 4 through the grating or false bottom 7 and thence to the drain pipe 6. Any large pieces of material which might clog the drainage opening or openings lodge upon this grating and may easily be removed.
It is to be understood that by the term roof structure as employed in the claims I refer not only to such a construction as that illustrated at 10 but also to any other form of roof, Whether it be applied to the cover of a building or to the cover structure of a room such for example as that illustrated at 1 in Fig. 1, Where, although said part constitutes a pavement, it like- Wise serves as the cover or ceiling or roof of one or more basement rooms, it being obvious that so far as the invention is considered, it is absolutely immaterial as to What construction or function is adopted for the parts 10 or 1.
I claim 1. The combination of a roof structure having an opening; a trough suspended in said opening and having an air passage in at least one of its sides; a covering member for said trough, also having an opening; a perforated false bottom in the trough; and means for conducting Water from the trough.
2. The combination of a roof structure having an opening; a trough suspended in said opening and having a passage in at least one of its sides; an adjustable damper mounted to control the flow of air through said passage; a covering member for said trough, also having an air opening; means for conducting Water from the trough; and a perforated false bottom in the trough for catching solid material.
3. The combination of a concrete roof structure having an opening; a trough having its free edges provided With flanges embedded in the roof structure and suspending it from the same, there being an air passage in at least one of the sides of the trough; a covering member for the opening, also having flanges embedded in the roof structure; and means for conducting Water from the trough.
4. The combination of a roof structure having an opening; a trough having flanges embedded in the roof structure and suspended thereby under the opening; a grating for the opening in the roof structure; flanged members embedded in the roof structure and supporting said grating; a perforated false bottom in the trough; means for conducting Water from the bottom of the trough; and adjustable dampers mounted in openings in the sides of the trough.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ALEXANDER CHAMBLEY.
