CHARLES K. DEMMIT'I, OF OWINGS MILLS, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES L. SUNDERLAND, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
RAIL-JOINT.
Application filed April 25, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES K. DEMMITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owings Mills, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements. in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for connecting the meeting ends of railway rails.
In carrying out the invention it is my purpose to produce a simple, inexpensive strong and durable means for connecting the ends of rails, wherein the rail ends will rest directly upon a tie so that the resiliency of the said rails will not be impaired, and also whereby the rails will be held against longitudinal and lateral movement and at the same time supported against vertical movement.
Vith the foregoing objects in view and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of two rails connected and supported in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the joint member looking toward the inner face thereof.
In the drawing the rails are designated by the character 1, while 2 indicates the ties supporting the rails. The meeting ends of the rails are disposed approximately central over one of the ties 2.
The improved joint or rail fastening includes, essentially, a substantially rectangular or block member 3 that has its ends inclined from its top so as to provide the bottom of the member 3 with a comparatively large bearing face which is adapted to be embedded in the roadbed. If desired the sides of the block member 3 may be provided with reinforcing ribs, and the said block is centrally provided with a substantially rectangular recess 1 that communicates with a central opening 5 upon the upper face of the block and the block is provided at the corners thereof with horizontally straight surfaces 6 upon which the rails are adapted to rest.

The referred to tie 2, receiving the meeting ends of the rails 1 has its ends received in the recess 4 and is consequently disposed between the horizontally straight shoulders 6 upon which the rails rest, so that the meeting ends of the rails will be supported directly upon the said tie 2 and whereby the rails will be afforded a cushion effect by the said tie so that their resiliency will not be impaired and consequently injury to the rails at the said meeting ends, incident to the weight of the rolling stock passing thereover will be effectively overcome.
The block 3, upon its outer face, is integrally formed with an upwardly extending inwardly disposed angular portion which I shall term a lip and which is designated by the numeral 7. This lip is of a length corresponding to that of the block 3 at the upper portion thereof and has its inner face shaped to snugly receive the sides of the rails and the upper edge of the said lip may underlie the heads of the rails. The lip 7 is centrally provided with a depressed portion arranged over the recess 4, and the horizontal wall 8 provided by the said depression has openings therein through which are passed spikes or similar securing elements 9 that enter the tie 2 and hold the said tie to the joint or block member 3. The vertical wall 10 provided by this recess has a plurality of transversely arranged openings 11 which are adapted to receive the securing bolts 12 that also pass through the bolt openings in the webs of the rails 1.
The numeral 13 designates the inner fish plate which is disposed in the fishing spaces of the rails opposite that within which is received the engaging member or lip 7 of the block 3, the said member 13 being provided with the usual openings to receive the ends of the bolts 12, and suitable nuts 14 are screwed upon the bolts to effectively lock the rails to the joint member.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination with the meeting ends of two rails and a tie upon which the ends of the said rails rest, of a joint member having an opening to receive the tie and being provided with horizontally straight shoulders opposite the said opening upon which the rails rest, a rail engaging lip formed integral with the block and received in the fishing spaces of the rails, a fish plate for the rails opposite the said lip, means for connecting the lip, rails and fish plate, and means for securing the block to the tie.
2. The combination with the meeting ends of two rails and a tie upon which the ends of the said rails rest, of a joint member for the rails comprising a substantially rectangular element having oppositely beveled ends, provided with a central recess which 15 communicates with an opening and within which opening and recess the end of the tie is received, whereby the ends of the rails will rest directly upon the tie and the portions of the rails adjacent the said ends will rest upon the top of the joint member, said joint member including a rail engaging lip, fish plate in the fishing spaces of the rails opposite the lip, means for securing the rails to the lip and fish plate, and means for securing the tie to the joint member.

It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 1,190,126, granted July 4, 1916, upon the application of Charles K. Denunitt, of Owings Mills, Maryland, for an improvement in Rail-Joints, were erroneously issued to James L. Sunderland as assignee of said invent-ion, Whereas said Letters Patent should have been issued to the inventor, said Demmitt, and James L. Sanderland jointly, said Sunderland being owner of one-half interest only, as shown by the record of assignments in this office; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
