To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES J. McGowan, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bearings for Pin-Cylinders, of which the following is a specification, reference being. had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to that class of picking machines more particularly known as bale breakers adapted to operate upon fibrous materials such as cotton and the like to prepareit for the lappers, and has particular reference to the pin cylinder which cooperates with the lifting pin apron of the breaker. Large quantities of material, such as half or quarter of a bale, may be placed into this machine at a time and upon being fed along through the same by the traveling apron beneath the pin cylinder the mass is broken up, the cotton opened and cleaned and evenly distributed upon the apron before it is permittedto pass through the machine.
It is found in practice that different qualities as well as materials having diflerent lengths of fibers are to be treated differently and in order to do this it is found desirable that, the pin cylinder may be readily adjusted toward and from the traveling pin apron so as to operate at difierent distances from the apron to regulate the thickness of the layers of cotton passing through the machine.
The object of the present invention is to provide screw actuated means all adapted to be operated from one side of the machine whereby both ends of the roll may be adjusted simultaneously and that, while the machine is running if desired, the mechanism being adapted to be securely locked from vertical motion in any desired position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing a portion of the breaker frame and the relative position of the pin cylinder to the pin apron. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the machine, partly in section, illustrating my improved mechanism for vertically ad usting the pin cylinder with relation to the apron. Fig. 3- is a side elevation of a portion of the machine and one of the roll shaft bearings therein, and means for retaming the bearing against vertical motion. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3 showing the retaining bolt passing through the flange of the pin roll bearing. Fig. 5- 1s a diagram illustrating the pin roll driving belt. 7
A portion of the frame of the machine is indicated at 6, the 'machine employing a doffing cylinder 7, a grid 8, and an upper roll 9 forthe pin apron 10 all of which may be operated in the well known manner.
It is found of great practical advantage in the operation of a breaker of this character to locate the pin cylinder 11 directly above the upper apron roll 9 and to provide simple and effective means for adjusting this roll toward and from the apron as it passes over this roll. To accomplish this I have provided bearings 12-12 in which the cylinder shaft 13 is rotatably mounted, said bearing being adapted to be raised and lowered in openings 14 in the side frames. Each of these bearings is provided with a flange portion 15, see Fig. 3, extending laterally from the center portion thereof, the ends of the flange being adapted to rest upon vertically disposed finished strips 16, and bolts 17 pass through the ends of the flange and through elongated slots 1818, the heads of the bolts, 19 bringing up against the inner side of the frame while the nuts 20 may be set up on the outside to securely bind and lock the bearing in any desired position in the frame. Each of these bearings is also provided with an upwardly extending. nut portion 21 which is threaded at its upper portion to receive the lower portion of the long adjusting screw 22. The upper portion or shank of each screw is left plain and is pinned, keyed or otherwise secured in the hub of its driving miter gear 23, the lower side of which is supported on the member 24; of the machine.
A transversely arranged shaft 24 passes through bearings 2525 on either side of the machine, to which shaft is secured a pair of miter gears 2626 meshing with the miter gears 23, and a hand operating wheel 27 is secured to the outer end of this shaft 24 whereby it may be rotated to accurately raise and lower both ends of the TED STATES PATENT onnion.

It will now be understood that the construction and operation of my improved device is such that it is only necessary for the attendant to rotate the hand wheel 27, which will in turn, through the miter gears 28 and 25, rotate the adjusting screws, whereby the pin cylinder may be lowered or raised bodily, that is, both ends at once toward or from the apron as it passes over the upper roll 9, thereby adjusting the ioll to accommodate material of different character having fibers of difierent lengths, and also to prevent any unevenness, as it causes the material to be distributed uniformly and evenly upon the apron positively preventing one edge of the layer being thicker or heavier than the Other edge. I claim:
An improvement in bearings for pin cylinders comprising spaced apart threaded sleeves, laterally extending flanges formed on said sleeves, adjusting screws extending in said sleeves, strips mounted on the frame of said machine and comprising an antifriction guide for said flanges, bevel gears on the ends of said screws, a shaftliaving beveled gears meshing with the gears on said screws, means for operating said shaft whereby said screws will be simultaneously adjusted, said frame being provided with slots located adjacent said strips, and securing bolts passing through said flanges and said slots to secure said flanges in adjusted position against said strips.
