Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. PLUNKET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO VICTOR E. MAUGER,
OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT I'N GRIPERS FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,566, dated August 1, 1871.
To au whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. PLUNKET, of the city of New York, in the county and State of NewYork, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Griper for Cylinder- Press; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying,l drawing forming part of this specication.
Figure l represents a vertical transverse section of my improved griper attachment to presses. Fig'. 2 is a side view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional side view of a modiication of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
OrdinaryT presses now in use are provided with gripers of a certain size and style. The same will answer for all ordinary purposes but where one cylinder is used on a doublefeeder press, as, 4
for example, the oscillating cylinder on the wellknown VY/'harfedale,77 and registers two sets of gripers for holding the sheets alternately at opposite ends, such gripers are only useful for certain defined sizes of sheets, unless they are made adjustable. To thus make them adjustable is the object of my invention and its result.
A in the drawing represents a printing-cylinder. It is provided with two sets of gripers, B and B', which are secured to vibratingl rods al a., and controlled in their motions, lby cams or other' suitable mechanism, in any known manner.
The ordinary gripers are made to extend a suitable distance from the rods, to hold sheets of a suitable size. My improved gripers iit through perforated sleeves c c that are mounted upon the rods a., or through apertures in said rods, and can be adjusted therein to suit the several sizes of papers to be held between them, and clamped by set-screws b b or other means.
Instead of being` adjustable on the rods af, the
gripers may be `extensible by being made in sections, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the outer may be moved on the inner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersTatent- The adjustable gripers, applied to the printing-cylinder, substantially as herein shown and described.
THOMAS J. PLUNKET.
