My invention relates to door locks and its main objectis to provide improved mechanism .within the door jamb for coperating with .the locking bolt mounted in the .door in order that the bolt may be readily withdrawn upon actuation of a knob or key while at the same time the lock can not be picked.

The mechanism for the lock section to be inserted in a door is inclosed in a casing 10 having the escutcheon plate 11 provided with thebolt opening 12. A trigger 40 is therefore provided and pivoted in the bolt head at its inner end with its head l1. normally extending beyond the beveled surface V15 of the bolt head. The trigger is pivoted in the plane of the end 26 of the bar 25 and. the lshape of the head h is such that when it encounters the jamb in advance of the bolt head surface 15 when the door is slammedits inner end will strike the end 26 to effect shifting inwardlyof bar 25 and release of the pawls in order that the pawls A'may be withdrawn into the bolt head before the surface 15 strikes the door jamb. Any suitable spring 41 is provided for holding the trigger in its outer position.
` Provision is preferably made to lock the bolt against shifting from the outside of thel door. As best shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the outer knob shaft section 29 is connected with the inner knob shaft section 29 in the usual manner by a threaded stud 42. The shaft 29 carries a hub 43 from which extends the arm 44 in the path of which extends the wing 32 extending from arm 31 controlled by the knob shaft section 29. A
- spring 45 engaging the arm 46 on hub 43 tends to hold 'arm 44 in vertical position.
The hub 43 from which arm 3l extends has impossible to turn the outer knob shaft secytion 29. The shaft section 29 is, however,
free at all times to be turned by its knob' in either direction. When the plate 49 is swung to release the a'rm 47 the lock can be operated from either inside or outside by y turning the respective knob. The lever 50` from the door knob shaft. Describing now the construction of the jamb section of the lock, the mechanism therefor is inclosed inffla housing 54 having the escutcheon plate 55. This escutcheon plate is provided with an inlet opening 56 which registers with the lock bolt opening 12 when the door is closed. Normally closing the opening 56 is a plate 57 carried at the front of a vertical bar 58 which is slidable at its upper and lower ends on rods 59 and 60 which rods may be in the form of screws for holding the housing 54 together. Springs 61 and 62 mounted on the respective rods tend to'hold the bar 58 in forward position with the plate 57 within the open- "ing 56. In front of the bar 58 upper and .isabove the latch bar 63. The cam plates 72` and 74 have respectively the lon-V gitudinal cam slots `,75 and 76 into which extend pins 77 and 7 8 on the bar 58 the cam slots being in such direction'that when the bar 58 isl shifted rearwardly the cam plates will be swung toward eachother to bring their outer ends against the latch plates 63 and 64to force them together. The plate '58 has notches 79 and 80 for receiving the latch plates 63 and 64 when the bar is in its outer position (see Fig. -3).
Y With the above arrangement when the door is being closed the bolt on the door is forced inwardly until the bolt opening 12 comes into register with the jamb opening 56, and then the bolt encounters the plate 57 and this plate together with bar 58 is forced -int the jamb lock section. VUpon such inward movement of the bar 58 the cam plates 72 and 74 are swung toward each other to force thelatch plates 63 and 64 together and 4against the upper and lower surfaces of the bolt head. Then when the pawls in the bolt head are swung outwardly the outer teeth a and a will be behind the latch plates 63 and 64 and inward movement of the bolt will be blocked unless the bolt pawls are first drawn in. .As before described, the innerpawl.A
teeth b and b are blocked by the escutcheon plate 11 when the pawls are extended. All the parts move in proper timed relation.
l When the lock is drawn in by means of a door knob ythe bolt pawls are not swung out until the knob has been released after thev door has ,been closed. If the door is slammed the trigger will, upon striking the Jamb, draw the pawls inwardly and. the beveled surface 15 of the bolt head striking the jamb \will then force the bolt inwardly, and the bolt pawls will not again be swung out until .the bolt head has entered the jamb lock section. After the bolt head enters the Jamb lock section the latch plates 63 and 64 will be in front of the outer teeth b, b of 'the pawls. Both the inner and outer pawl teethv of the bolt being thus blocked it is impossible, except by breaking the door and jambto unlock the door unless the pawls are withdrawn either by actuating a knob or a key.
I also provide additional locking mecha- -nism automatically controlled by the main locking mechanism. A latch bar 81 1s pivoted on ashaft 82 journaled in the outer and inner walls of the jamb lock housing 54, the latch bar being at the outside `of the housing 54 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The end of xthe bar carries the counter weight 83 which tends to hold the'bar in vertical. position. Pivoted on a stud 84 is a lever 85 whose upper end has spin and'slot connection with the crank arm 86 extending from the shaft 82. Y The lower endof the lever has the slot 87 receiving the pin 88 extending from the bar 58, the arrangement being such that when the bar 58 is forced inwardly to effect interlock of the latch plates and bolt pawls 'the lever 85` will be swung toeffect rotation of shaft 82 to cause the latch bar 8l to be swung to horizontal position with its end in front of the housing 10 of the door lock .section (see Fig. 2). The latch .bar
then prevents opening of the door, and in.
order to prevent forcible removal 'of the bar I provide a locking detent therefor, this detent being in the form of an L-shaped member 89 arranged within the housing 10 and pivoted at its lower end to'ears 90 extending from the housing, the detent end g extending through the opening 91 above the latch bar 8l when the latch bar is in closed lock mechanism, the locking plate 93 will be released from the detent 89 and this detent swung inwardly by its spring out of the path of the latch bar 81. Then when rthe bolt is lreleased'after locking of the door and 4moves outwardly the detent plate 93 will be swung outwardly to carry its cam surface 93 against the detent 89 to move this detent outwardly to project its end g over the latchkbar 81 to thus lock the latch bar.
If the door is now to be opened the'bolt is withdrawn either by means of a knob or key and this effects withdrawal of the cam plate 93 from the detent 89 which swings inwardlyv to release the latch bar 81, this bar swinging back to normal position as the lever 85 is swung by the bar 58 when this bar is shifted back to its normal position. The lock housings 10 and 54 are preferably set into the door and j amb respectively to be entirely surrounded with only the escutcheonl plates visible. The latch bar 81 and its detent 89 will then be protected by a layer of wood or metal and yaccess'thereto will be practically impossible except by breaking awa-y the wood or metal.
I thus produce a lock comprising parts simple in construction and arrangement, the
parts being in greater part adapted to be stamped from sheet metal and being therefore very strong and durable. Although the bolt can be readily withdrawn atany time by means of a door knob or key, it will be impossible to insert a knife blade or other implement between the door and jamb to withdraw the bolt as the bolt is locked againstl retraction by two sets ot teeth which are fully protected against access from the outside. 'The latch bar which isl automatically swung in front of the door affords additional protection and such bar can notv be unlocked except by turning of the knob or by the use of a key.
Ido not, of course, desire to be limited to the exact details of construction, arrangement and operation shown, as changes and modifications are no doubt possible which would still come withinthe scope of the invention as defined by the claims, and 1 claim as follows: f
1. 1n a lock, the combination of a bolt plate having a head, pawlsvpivoted in said head and having inner and outer teeth adapted to project beyond the opposite sides of the head, a bar movable on said bolt plate tending to keep vsaid pawls spread apart with the teeth projecting, opposed latch platesin the j amb with which the door is j associated, means controlled by entry of movement of said bolt plate.
" 2. In locking mechanism for doors, the
combination of a door lock section comprising an escutcheon plate havingla bolt opening, 'a 'bolt plate having a head adapted to .slide through said opening, pawlspivioted in said' head and .having teeth, means tending to swing said pawlsl to be entirelywithin said head, a bar slidable oh said bolt plate and normally engaging said pawls to spread them apart to cause their teeth to project'V l beyond thesides ofthe bolt head and -in front ofthe escutcheon plate whe'reby` said bolt plate is `prevented from linward move- 'ment by pressure; thereon, al door knob shaft and a hub thereon, 'an arm extending .from said hub, said boltjplate and bar thereon having notches iii-which the end of said arm engages, said notches being' odset whereby upon turning of said-knob shaft and lswinging of said arm said bar will,l be'shifted aI f" distance first to release the` pawls to allow said bolt plate to be then shifted inwardly, anI abutment arm extending from said hub, and a locking plate adapted to be set with reference to said abutment arm to prevent turning of said knob shaft and shifting of i the bolt.
3. In lockingmechanism for doors, the combination of va door lock section compris ing an escutcheon plate having a bolt o ening, a bolt plate having a head adapte to slide through said opening, pawls pivoted in said head and having teeth, means tending to swing said pawls to be entirely within said head, a bar slidable on said bolt plate and normally engaging said pawls to spread them apart to cause their teeth to project beyond the sides of the bolt head and in front of the escutcheon plate whereby said bolt plate is prevented from inward movement by pressure thereon, a door knob shaft and a hub thereon, an arm extending from said hub, said bolt plate and bar thereon having notches in which the end of said arm engages, said notches being oisetl whereby upon turning of said knob shaft and swing of said arm said bar will be shifted a distance first to release the pawls to allow said bolt plate to` be then shifted inwardly, an abutment arm extending from said hub, a pivoted locking plate, and an abutment controlled lever connected with said locking plate for settingV said plate'in the path of said abutment arm to prevent rotation of the knob shaft.
4. In lockingl mechanism for doors, the combinationlwith a lockhousing secured to the door, a lock bolt reci-procable inL said Ihousing and having a head, and means for controlling the shifting of said bolt, of a 'lock housing secured in the jamb of the door frame, a latch bar pivoted on said jamb housing and adapted to be swung to position in front of the door to lock the door against opening, means within said j amb housing controlled by the entry of the bolt head thereinto for effecting swinging of said' latch bar to locking position, and a detent for locking the latch bar in locking position.
5. In locking mechanism for doors, the
combination with a housing secured to the.
door, a bolt slidable in said housing, and
-means for actuating said bolt, of a housing secured in the jamb of the door frame, a latch bar Vpivoted to 1 said jamb housing adapted to be swung to engage in front of the door housing to lock the door against opening, actuating lever mechanism within said jamb housing connected with said latch bar to be engaged and actuated by the bolt when said bolt is shifted into the jamb housing,- and a detent for locking the latch bar in locking position.
6. In locking mechanisml for doors, the
combination `with a lock housing secured 4to 1 the'dbor, a -lock bolt reciprocable in said housing andv having a head, means for con-4 trolling the shifting of said bolt, of a-lock housing secured in the jamb of the door frame, a -latch bar pivoted on said jamb housing and adapted to be swung to position in front of the door to lock thefdoor against opening, means within said jamb housing controlled by the entry of the bolt head into said housing for effecting swing of the latch bar to locking position, a detent pivoted on the door housing, and a connection between said detentand bolt adapted upon outw'ard movement of said bolt into the j amb housing to project said detent into the path of said latch bar to lock said latch bar in latch position.
7. In locking mechanism for doors, the
combination with a lock housing secured to theI door, a lock bolt reciprocable in said housing and having a head, means for conj trolling the shifting of said bolt, of a lock housing secured -in the jamb of the door frame, a latch bar pivoted on said jamb housing and adapted to be swung to positionfin front of the door to lock the door against opening, means within said jamb housing controlled .by the entryfof the bolt l head into said housing for effecting swinging of the latch bar to locking position, a locking detent for the latch `bal,` pivoted to the door housing, means for holding said detent out of the path of said latch bar when dsaid door is closed and said bolt is within the door housing, and aJ locking plate lfor said detent controlled by the movement of said bolt to outer position to first shift said detent into the path of unlatching movement of said latch bar and then to lock such detent in such latch bar locking position. y
8. In locking mechanism for doors, f the combination with a lock housingv secured to the door and having a'bolt opening, a bolt slidable in said housing and having ahead adapted to be projected through said open-v ing, pawls pivoted on said head, said head having outlets through which the pawl ends may extend beyond the head sides,'means for holding the pawls within the head when the'bolt is drawn inwardly, means for causing swing of said pawls to project their ends through and beyond said opening when" the bolt is shifted outwardly, of a vjamb'lock housing secured in the jamb of the door frame and having an inlet opening frf the.
bolt head, latch plates at the opposite'side's' of the jambhousing opening, a bar extending across the openmg in-tlie jamb-housing in the path of said bolt head to be shifted inwardlyas said head passes into said jamb housing, and lever mechanism connecting between said bar, andsaid latch plates for bringing said latch platsrtogfether against the opposite sides of said bolt head and behind the projected pawl ends to thereby lock said bolt against withdrawal from the jamb, and means mounted in the door lock housing for first releasing the pawls from said 6()I for holding the pawls within the head when the bolt is drawn inwardly, means for causing swinging of said pawls to project their ends through and beyond 4said opening when the bolt is shifted outwardly, of a jamb lock housing secured in the j amb of the door frame and having an inlet opening for the bolt head, latch plates at the opposite sides of the jamb housing opening, a bar extending across the opening in the jamb housing in the path of` said bolt head to be shifted inwardly as said head passes into said jamb housing, and lever'mechanism connecting between said bar and said latchl plates for bringing said latch plates together against the opposite sides of said bolt head and be- 4, hind the projected pawl ends to thereby lock said bolt against withdrawal from the amb, means mounted in the door lock housing for first releasing the pawls from said latch plates and for then withdrawing the bolt to allow opening of the door, a latch bar pivoted to the jamb housing and adapted to be" i swung into position in front of the door housing to prevent opening of the door, and '95 lever mechanism' connectmg between said latch bar and the latch plate actuating bar and adapted to swing said latch bar to locking position simultaneously with the actuation of the latch plates into locking position behind the projecting pawl ends.
