UNITED STATES PATENT OFFT CE. i
GEORGE T. OLDHAM, or NEW YQIZN. Y., ASSIGNOR 0E ONE-HALF TO GEORGE s. ELLIOTT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DETACHABLE COMBINATION-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11,1916.
Application filed February 1,1915. Serial No. 5,442.
tan, and State'of New York, have inventeda new and Improved Detachable Combination-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to pro-.
vide a detachable combination lock having a shank with a lateral flange for disposal in an opening in a key plate, a combina tion locking device being mounted on the shank for cooperating with teeth on the edge of the shaft.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which- Figure 1 is a view showing how my invention is used to look a door, a door and door jamb being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my lock; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lock showing the rings in looking posit-ion; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a shank 10 is provided, this shank 10 having a lateral flange 11 which, if desired, may be provided with a tooth as illustrated in the drawings. This shank 10 is preferably disposed as shown in Fig. 1 with the tooth flange 11 disposed in the door jamb 12 at 13. Of course, if there is a key plate in the door jamb, this flange 11 may be disposed in an opening in the key plate. The shank 10 along its upper edge 14 has teeth 15 which are spaced apart and on this shank 10 there is mounted a slotted spindle 16 as best shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the shank 10 being disposed in the slot 17 of the shank. -At one end-of the spindle 16 there is a plate 18 with a slot 19 which forms a continuation of the slot 17 of the shank, there being at the other end of the spindle 16, a plate 20. This plate 20 is secured to the spindle 16 in any suitable manner and is provided with a slot 21 forming a continuation of the slot 17. The shank 10 is disposed in these slots 17,19 and 21- and the spindle 16 is free to move longitudinally of the shank 10 except when its movement is 7 limited by the means which I now describe.
Rotatably mounted on the spindle 16 there are rings 22 and. 23, these rings 22 and 23 having inner rims 24 which are normally disposed between the teeth 15, the rim 24 on therin 22 being spaced from the rim 24 on the r ng 23 so that each of these rims may pass between adjacent teeth. It will be understood that when either of these rims is disposed between adjacent teeth on the shank 10, it will be impossible to move the spindles 16 longitudinally of the shank, but that when the rings 22 and 23 are rotated until the recesses 25, in the rims 24, are disposed at the teeth 15, it will be possible to move the spindle 16 longitudinally of the shank 10 so that one of the plates 18 or 20 may be disposed against the door jamb 12 and the door 26 when rotary movement of one or both of the rings 22 and 23 will move the rims 24 between the teeth 25 of the shank 10 to lock the spindle 16 relatively to the shank. The plate 20 is provided with numbers on its periphery and in a similar manner, numbers are indicated on the peripheries of the rings 22 and 23 so that it may be determined when the rings 22 and 23 have been rotated to positions where their recesses 25 will be disposed at the teeth to permit of the longitudinal movement of the spindle.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a detachable combination look, a shank having securing means and teeth extending along one edge, and a locking device slidably mounted on the shank for adjustment therealong and having a rotatable ring with a rim for moving between the teeth on the shank for holding the locking device in adjusted position, the rim having a recess to permit of the movement of the shank longitudinally of the locking dev1ce.
2. In a detachable combination look, a shank having securing means, and teeth extending along one edge, a spindle having a slot in which the shank is disposed, a plurality of rings rotatably mounted on the spindle and having inner rims for disposal between the teeth on the shank for holding the spindle in a predetermined position on the shank, there being recesses in the rims to permit of the movement of the shank longitudinally of the spindle, and means at the ends of the spindle for holding the rings on the spindle.
3. In a detachable combination look, a shank having securing means and teeth eX- tending along one of its edges, a spindle with a longitudinally extending slot in which the shank is disposed a plate at each end of the spindle with slots in alinement with the first mentioned slot and one or more locking rings rotatably mounted on the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the spindle between the plates and having inner rims for disposal between any predetermined teeth when the spindle has been adjusted along the shank, there being recesses in the rims to permit of the movement of the shank relatively to the spindle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
