To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, 'lHoMAs JOEL KING, a citizen of the United States, residing atv Richmond, in the county of Henric o and State of Vir inia, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Breath.- Deflectors, of which the following is a specification. I This invention relates to' improvements in breath deflectors, and has for its main object to provide an instantly adjustable shield to cover the'mouth andnostrils of dentists, surgeons, nurses and others whose work necessitates their leaning directly over the face or affected part of a customer or patient.
Another object is to provide a shield for deflecting the breath of the wearer away from the face of another, thus saving both parties from the necessity of inhaling the breath of one another, which is not only exceedingly disagreeable but often the In the tonsorial' trade the barberIis obliged to lean his head directly over the face of his customer, thus necessitating the very obnoxious and dangerous interchange of breath.
Still another objectof the invention is to provide a breath deflector which may be instantlysecured into position by engagement with the nostrils.
With the above and other objects in view, I have invented the deflector illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which.
Figure 1' is a front elevation of my device, showing it as worn, Fig. 2 isa vertical sectional view thereof, showing how it is secured to a wearer, Fig. 3 isa rear elevation thereof, Fig. 4 is a rear view of a modisfied form of the device, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical central sectional view of Fig. 4.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 indicates a shell which may be made of celluloid, metal, paper, wood, or any other suitable material, and should be made very thin and extremely light in weight. This shell is pressed or formed into such a shape that it will completely cover the nostrils a nd mouth and the edges thereof contact the flesh around the nostrils and mouth so as to prevent the escape of the wearers breath at any part except the extreme ends 2 and v srarns' TIHO'1VIAS JOEL KING, or mcinvioim vmomia.

is a convenient form of a securing piece for my breathdeflector, and consists virtually of a resilient strip of wire, which is composed of a loop, two inturn'ed integral legs, said legs belng formed with terminal convex portions onits legs, so that said portions may be held in the depressions in the nasal membrane, and thereby obtain a firmer As the contour of the face of different persons varies, 6 and 7 may have aflixe'd theretoa layer of wool, felt or other substance having axgive thereto so as to completely fill in any inter 'stices' that may exist between the edges of I the device and the face of the wearer. This substance is shown at 8 on one portion of the lower edge of Fig. 3.
In Figs. 4 and 5 a modifiedform of the invention is shown. The ends 9 and 10 of'the device are shown tubular and'the rear central portion 11 is cut away to engage the nose and mouth, and lnstead of the means above describedfor holding the device on' the face, a pair'of ordinary spectacle supporting wires 12 and 12, the outer ends of which are bent to engage the ears, are fastened to the opposing ends of the device for holding it in place.
Besides the above explained uses for the device it may be used to advantage for many other purposes, such'for instance, as to prevent the inhalation of poisonous powders,-
vapors orgases over whichit may be necessary for the wearer to work.
I claim and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, 1
1. A breath deflector comprising an anchor shaped member formed of a one piece shell, said member consisting of an enlarged central portion from each side of the upper and lower edges which extend upwardly curved arms-each being approximately one third the length of said deflector and a central nose inclosing portion extending upwardly from said central portion above the extremities of said arms and an attaching means, said member having inturned edges shaped to the contour of a persons face.
2. A breath deflector comprising an anchor shaped member formed of a one piece shell, said member consisting of an enlarged central portion from each side of which extend upwardly curved arms each being approximately one third the length or' said deflector and a central nose inclosing portion extending upwardly from said central portion above the extremities of said arms. and an attaching means, said member hay'ing inturned edges shaped to the contour of a persons face, said arms being semi-cylindrical whereby in conjunction with a wearers cheeks air passages are formed.
3. A breath deflector comprising an anchor shaped member formed of'a one piece shell, said member consisting of anenlarged central portion from each side of which extend upwardly curved arms each being approximately one third the length of said clefiector and a central nose inclosing portion extending upwardly from said Centralportion-abovethe extremities of said arms and an attaching means, said member having inturned edges shaped to the contour of a persons face, said arms being semi-cylindrical whereby in conjunction with a wearers cheeks air passages are formed, certain of said edges having a layer of fibrous material thereon.
4. A breath deflector comprising an anchor shaped member formed of a one piece shell, said member consisting of an enlarged central portion from each side of which extend, upwardly curved arms each being approximately one third the length of said deflector and a central portion above the extremities of said arms and an attaching means, said member having inturned edges shaped to the contour of a persons face, said arms being semi-cylindrical whereby in conjunction with. a Wearers cheeks air passages are formed, certain of said edges having a layer of fibrous material thereon, said means projecting from the central portion of said enlargement.
