WILLIAM IVI. RANDOLPH, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
NAIL-CUTTER.
To all whom it' may concern Be it known that I, WrLLrAisr M. RAN- DOLPH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nail-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to nail cutters or trimmers and has special reference to such devices for cutting or trimming finger and toe nails.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efiicient nail cutter or trimmer, which will be of convenient and shapely form, will be capable of operating without injury to the linger or toe, and will be operable to present different sharpened edges for cutting or trimming the nails when desired.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically setv forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved nail cutter and trimmer, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved nail cutter or trimmer; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged crosssection on the line 3 3 Fig. l; Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken centrally of the same on the line 4.--4 Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a plan view showing another form of the cutter or trimmer.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing A represents my improved nail cutter or trimmer which is formed of the supporting body or plate a and the cutter or trimmer b mounted on the front side thereof. The plate a can be formed of' any suitable materiahthin sheet metal, such as steel preferred, and the cutter Z) is formed of thin sheet metal such as steel. The plate a is provided with a slot l, lengthwise and centrally of the same, and one end of such plate is preferably pointed, as at 2, and the other end is' preferably Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1915 Applicationled April 13, 1915. Serial No. 20,981.A
face so as to form a sharpened periphery onV Vthe cutter. The cutting edge Gon the cutter b extends slightly beyond one end of theV slot lk in the plate a. and the ends of such slot are semi-circular or rounded as at 1 while if desired, the end ladjacent said cutting edge may be curved back or flared on the under or back side of the plate a, and back from the front side of the same, as at l to prevent a thin edge and thus enable the nail to be more easily engaged by the cutting edge 6 on the cutter b.
In the use of my improved nail cutter or trimmer, the end of the nail of a persons linger or thumb, such as is shown at c in Fig. 4 is placed within the slot 1 in the plate a and against the cutting edge 6 on the cutter 79, whereupon by moving said nail along said edge the end of the nail can be cut and trimmed to the thickness and length desired, and the sides of such plate adjacent said slot will act as a guard to prevent cutting, scraping or other injury to the finger. In case the cutting edge 6 on the cutter b extending over the end of the slot l in the plate a becomes dull another sharpened portion on said edge may be presented over said end by simply moving or rotating said cutter around on its pivot 5 through inserting the finger in the slot or depression 7 therein, the cutter b being held securely by its pivot 5 but being capable of movement under suiiicient pressure.
If desired, the cutting edge 6 on the cutter b may be provided with a series of separatev cutting edges 6 by forming serrations orl concave portions in said edge (such as shown in Fig. 5), so that each of said concave edges can be curved over the seat 1 in the plate a, when desired, by the finger piece 7 which is pressed out of said plate, while various other changes in the design, construction, arrangement and application of my improved device may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any' of its advantages.z
It will thus be seen that my improved nail cutter or trimmer will be a handy and convenient article' for the pocket and Willalvvays bev ready Jfor instantY and comfortable use, While at the same time it will do its Work neatly and conveniently and Without injury to the person on Which it is used. rIhe cutters can be readily removed'when requiredrand can be easilyrremoved for Sharpening when desired. v
What Iclaim as my invention and desire to secure by Letter-s -Patentrisz y Y l. A' nailfeutter comprising a body yniembei'haviiiga narrow Slot Withinthe same for receiving a nail'edge, fand a circular cutter f plate rotatablyV mounted onwsaid member and having 'its cutting edge extending transe versely across one end of said slot.
2. A nail-cutter comprising a body .mem-- ber having a narrow s lot Within the same for Vreceiving afnailfedge, and a circular cutter plate rotatably mounted on said member and having ite cuttingv edge egtending transversely across one end of Said slot, Said body member being thinned down at said slot end on Vthe under side of said member. f
3. A nail-cutter comprising a plate having onefen'd thereof formed with Ya'lile Surface and .a cleaning point, said plate having formed therein a narrovv Yslot for receiving a nail-edge, and a circular blade mounted on vSaid plate withlits edge Vprojecting transversely aeross'said'slot, said'blade being rotatable t0 permit (if-,changing Vthe ycutting Yedge. Y
Intestimony whereof I, the `said WiLLIAM M. RANDOLPH, have'hereunto set my hand.
